There are always free servers, you just can't gain any prestige on them... ie rank up... so you can play all you like, you just have to subscribe to get the full effect of the game.

All servers, however, are free during the current free trial, which lasts until April 4. At that date you can then use your 5-day coupon to get another five days free!

I do not know if "godly smooth" are the proper words.  It has some lag on occasion.  However, it is standard fare lag for any MMO, way better than, say, Planetside.  I think the secret of the lag is to set your bandwidth settings in options to something lower than you have.  I have DSL, but I set it to 56k modem.  SO when the others are screaming Lag, I am usually fine.

Darkspace is an EXCELLENT game.  They sucked me in... I cancelled my other subscriptions, deleted my Lineage 2 client (do you have any idea how much time I spent DLing and patchign that?), and subscribed.  It is fairly complex, and has a huge learning curve.  It also is not a "power level to the fun stuff" game.  Leveling, what there is of it, is just something that happens along the way, but the fun stuff starts right away.  You do have to work your way up to the heavy combat captial ships, of course.

I have only two objections thus far.

I would really rather that the midshipman selection of ships included the supply ships, which rearm and repair, rather than the engineering ship, which builds up planets.  Building is a bit of an art to learn, and does not need to be done all that often.  It really has no business as a first level starter ship.  However, supply ships are needed all the time, and would really let the newest players both be a contributer and let them level up a bit easier.

Secondly, I wish the ability to switch empires was removed, or at least made to be less easy than logging off and logging back on as a new team.  A timer is not the answer either.

Fleets change that, Mog. If you're an independent player you can hop around factions all you like, but if you join a fleet you're locked to that fleet's faction.

I know what you mean Moghedan :) Darkspace is amazingly addictive.

You know that the next patch, 1.482, will bring all new ships and weapons? It's possible that we will see a supply ship available to midshipmen. Then again, considering you are only a midshipman for a short time as being promoted early on is incredibly easy, AND midshipmen are what demo accounts are stuck with, we may not.

We WILL be seeing lots of new stuff though. As much as 1.481 changed the game for the better, 1.482 will do even more :) Can't wait to beta test it on the beta client.

Once the trial ends faction hopping won't be much of an issue as only subscribed players can actually play in MV. For scenarios it hardly matters as the teams autobalance.
