it might only need like 35k accounts per server to be comparable to wow on a community level (based on 8million, 180+ servers, and each server being segregated between alliance and horde). We all know WoW isn't pumping the extra money into more content, not that Vanguard will either, but I think it's safe to say if the game has one server and 35k accounts it will be just as good as playing a horde in WoW, well for PvE anyway, for PvP you'd have to go into subs per battlegroup or something.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You? if I were to kill a titan tomorrow and no CCP employees showed up to say grats I would petition it. Waiting for: the next MMO that lets me make this macro if hp < 30 then CastSpell("heal") SpellTargetUnit("player") else CastSpell("smite") end

I'm not absolutely positive that this is the only Internet Forum in the world where people are criticizing Vanguard. Of course, anyone who's thinking about playing any new game comes to these sites to get an idea what the game is like - both good opinions and bad ones. And what do they see for this game? A bunch of people saying they tried the game and, even if they were able to get it to play, found it to not be any fun; while the people who say they will be playing the game and waiting online for us are rabidly attacking everyone who has the incredible gall to not like it - or even going so far off the deep end as to blame people's computers for running Vanguard worse than any other game.
It's hard to see how that's generating a huge crowd of people clamoring: "Hey, where do I sign up?"

They don't have 35k accounts per server LOL.
You see 180+ servers. That would be for the 3 million US/Euro subs. We'd need someone from China to tell us how many servers they have for their 5 million chinese gamers. I've always been skeptical of Blizzards claims anyway. 8 million accounts would take 800 server shards at 10,000 accounts per shard which would be really close to the limit. Considering the wait queues they have going i know they don't have the best technology behind their game. I almost guarantee their numbers are inflated by at least 3 or 4 million just for the hype and free advertising.
I know SOE used to like to keep the average population active per shard at around 4000. If it got higher thats when they'd split the server. I'd imagine with the technology today you'd double that.
The high requirements are the main problem when it comes to subscribers I guess... Most people will have to upgrade their system (especially because of shader 2.0 graphic cards as requirement).
I would have preordered Vanguard if my PC was fast enough... Upgrading isn't worth it though since I'd need a new motherboard (mine got no AGP slot), another 512MB Ram and a new graphic card just to be able to run it on lowest settings. A new PC isn't a solution for me either since it's a P4 2.53 and alright for working and even gaming (can play all other available MMORPGs).
150-200k at best. If not a lot less. Not that they will ever release such disappointing numbers. I'm not saying Vanguard will never be a good EQ clone, but there are just too many out there and Vanguard is too late to jump on board.

Why would anyone expect Vanguard to do better than EQ2? That game had a terrific name recognition, and not just 500,000 (then current) EQ players, but also Lord knows how many former EQ players who would want to give it a try.
And what does Vanguard have to offer the increasingly crowded MMORPG market? Diplomacy and corpse runs?
I hear a lot from some EXTREMELY vocal supporters; but it's just a little bit hard to envision the mass appeal here.
- The community created by the developers will, somewhat, be a turn off to some players. **
- "To much reading" (Heh)
- High system requirements
- High time investment
- Grind is present
- Very hurtful death penalties
- No central community.
**(Constant talk of hardcore, "Old school", "Doesn’t hold your hand" ETC.. while it may be true, allot of community members use this as elitist fodder.)
High System Requirements? I'm playing beta and I've tested it on a mid-range system (IE, Core 2 E 6600 stock, 2 gb RAM Geforce 7950 GT and it ran smooth at almost high graphics, then I tested it on a high end system (Core 2 Extreme, 4 gb RAM, Geforce 8800GTX SLI) and it ran flawlessly. It is Group focused but it's also soloable, and the only way you can say it's a grind is if you compare it to carebears like WoW. I'm settling for about 150k-250k player base
Tried: Vanguard, UO, Rappelz, Archlord, RF Online, SWG, WAR, Ryzom, Anarchy Online, AC, APB, STO, Perfect World, Black Prophecy...
Played: EQ,EQII, Lineage, Lineage 2, GW, EVE Online, AoC, DoAC, iRO, AC2, WoW, SWTOR, Runes of Magic, Allods, Rift.. Currently Playing: Tera

Vanguard is larger than EQ2. EQ2 when it was released was tiny. There just wasn't anything to do. Vanguard at release is bigger than EQ2 after 3 years of development. It's larger than WoW. The appeal is the vast diverse world, the rich lore and the 3 spheres of advancement. Crafting in Vanguard is so much better than crafting in EQ2.

Do you keep up with technology? that's a mid-range system according to websites and magazines like PC Magazine, PC-Gamer, and most any other computing blog, magazine, or website. Epecially with the new Quad-Cores and 8800 GTXs out, which are considered the high end. I won't mention entry level specs

I agree that is totally a mid-range system. It's about what i have but i have an AMD2 system.
I'd say 250k, maybe 500k but that might be max. I'm a supporter of Vanguard, but it's not an easy game to get around. The content is there (in the upper band) but most people won't stick around for it.
High system requirements (MMO gamers dont expect to need a top spec PC like FPS gamers do)
Lack of marketing budget
Poor reviews, I predict most will give it 70-80% for the fact that ALL mmo's will be judged next to WoW, and VG just does not have the polish or History WoW (warcraft) has, I dont give a fudge if u hate WoW.. its the truth.. and im not saying WoW is better than VG or vice versa... its also very hard to review an MMO.
Players just dumped into the world, no reason given or intro explaining why your their like is does in WoW and LOTRO. No hook.
SoE reputaion
Lack of mass appeal as it has no establish fan base.
All these things (all my opionon BTW) will keep the subs below 500,000 at peek, and about 250,000 stable. Forget WoW's 8 million, 250,000 is a damn fine figure for an MMO.
The high requirements are the main problem when it comes to subscribers I guess... Most people will have to upgrade their system (especially because of shader 2.0 graphic cards as requirement).
Actually, that's a bit misleading. Cards going back to the 5000 series nVidia and equivalent ATI had Shader 2.0, but it was very infantile. Your best options are the generation after that. I think most people meet this criteria (but most won't like playing on low res/low quality just to play.) It's more of a matter of graphics horsepower (7 series+) and memory (2G is almost required)

Definitely a highend system.
@ OP
I predict VSoH would get 1-1.5 million subs in 2007 mostly due to WoW's introduction of many new people to the MMORPG genre. VSoH is not hardcore enough to discourage casuals and has enough alternatives to leveling (crafting and diplomacy) to encourage them to play it.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
WAR? well it looked like it had a long way ot go when i played it. I doubt it will have a large subscriber base.
i have to remember to quote you on this again after WAR release
Yeah maybe i'm forgetting how popular pvp is.. oh wait pvpers are just a vocal minority.
I remember the vocal pvp community for Vanguard saying how popular pvp is and that any game today should have pvp. So Sigil opens up PvP servers and what do you know.. they sit at about 1/3 the pve population.
In EVE the majority of subscribers avoid pvp at all costs. i'd say only about 35-40% of the EVE world is hardcore 0.0 pvpers
WAR is all about pvp. Therefore it won't appeal to the majority of gamers.
A lot of assumptions, but very little to back it up. I'm sure WAR will have a lot of well designed PvE content as well, after all, so did DAoC.
Hardcore PvP:ers are a vocal minority, I'll give you that much, but there is a large proportion of hardcore PvE gamers that want to play on PvP servers for the occasional PvP experience. This is a group that will most probably not mind a well designed "conflict" based MMO. WAR isn't PvP based, per se. Like the developers have said time and again, the game is all about war, where even PvE quests and/or raids will affect the conflict between the warring factions.

I'm indeed sad about the fact that Vanguard won't run on my system. But I missed the part where I insulted Vanguard or any other game because of too high reqs. I pointed out in my post on page three that it will lead to less subscribers, and your quoted post of me actually contains a link which supports the assumption.
Also didn't know so far that high system specs have anything to do with hardcore gaming.
Not saying it's for hardcore gamers to have the best systems, I'm just saying it's like car enthusiast, they always mod and upgrade their components because they want their cars to be running the fastest and in tip top shape sorry if I insulted you, just stating what I thought about system requirements.

I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

I'm sure WAR will have a lot of well designed PvE content as well, after all, so did DAoC.Hardcore PvP:ers are a vocal minority, I'll give you that much, but there is a large proportion of hardcore PvE gamers that want to play on PvP servers for the occasional PvP experience. This is a group that will most probably not mind a well designed "conflict" based MMO. WAR isn't PvP based, per se. Like the developers have said time and again, the game is all about war, where even PvE quests and/or raids will affect the conflict between the warring factions.
Don't you know people expect their p4's to last them forever!!!
I agree that is totally a mid-range system. It's about what i have but i have an AMD2 system.
Gaming magazines value it as mid-range because it's is mid-range compared to current buyable components, but this doesn't mean that it is the mid-range of the average gamer - to get an insight of what mid-range in this case means, check out this topic:

So your saying that graphics should lag behind technology because people think their P4's can be gaming machines? I guess that works being that WoW's graphics were quite ugly when it was released but it plays on any system... but that is an insult to hardcore gamers.
