Oh, definately, especially in an MMO, I think. Maybe we disagree on proportions, though. I think it's those "arbitrary rulesets" which make it a game, rather than a graphical chat room.

Do gamers log into an MMO just looking to chat? Or would someone looking to chat more likely log into a chat room, where they're sure to find others to chat with? While someone looking to game is more likely to be looking for game mechanics to play with?

I think both elements are important in an MMO, but if you don't provide a game, not many players even show up. Least that's my experience, in checking out taverns in almost every MMO that I've played. More people hang out at travel hubs and marketplaces to chat, than they do at places designed just for chatting.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

yep you heard me correctly, I want to play a game where I am not trying to be the Hero of the world. I want to live in that world and if things happen where I am forced to be heroic ... so be it. I don't want to be luke or Han solo, I want to be the Moisture farmer thats pretty darn good with a rifle.
I want a game where i can live another life in another time(cue the "haha does your life suck that bad") . A game where i can do what i please when i want, make a character specialized for my playstyle, if i want to make a 6'7 muscle bound freak, who goes bare chested and walk around with a giant hammer ... I should be able to! if i want to spend all day sitting in a bar drinking it up ... I can.
MMO's nowadays are built around the min/maxers and the hero d00ds.
Just make a world that i can live in and I will be happy.

In EQ one person can't do anything. Maybe that is the game for you.

but just got to wonder why you'd want to heard sheep or cows or till soil or sit in a bar in a game when you can do those for real irl.
You know I may one day wake up and WANT to do that. I should be able to herd my sheep and use them to make a profit if my sheep are well kept so tailors can make clothes and what not out of them. I should be able to take care of my farm and sell my produce if i want. Or sit in a bar and play minigames or just BS with friends.
Is that for me? not all of it, i have never been much of a crafter. tried it but never had the patience for it. Two of the coolest things happen to me in SWG that i will always remember. I was one of the first Slicers on my server, my guild had a VERY well known gunmaker in it. I was practicing slicing and needed some weapons he was churning out weapons to build his skills up so he gave them to me. He saw what slicing did to the weapon and we talked about "going into buisiness together". he would make a good gun i would slice it and he would sell it for a great profit. it was great fun, walking into his house and just LAGGING up because so many people were there.
then when i switched my character around, I had another armorsmith constantly sending me emails about Hides he needed. I would spend all day looking for high quality hides for him. To most it would probably be a chore but to me it was great and made the world feel alive.
Yes, but what fun are they? Is there any gameplay in them? Anything to do, but sit there and play make-believe by ourselves? Gaming is about challenges to overcome. Even when it comes to crafting, or being a merchant, it's about doing things, playing with the game mechanics.
Its funny i don't play MMOs for the challenge, simply because there is little to none. Most MMOs are so mundane it sickening. Like another person said, i play for the social interaction and because i want to feel like part of that world. Most MMOs now focus way too much on grinding and loot hording, where its not about the adventure but the end. And if you don't get X amount of exp in an hour it makes you feel like your being left behind.
Again I hate to keep bringing it up because im sure someone will just say im romanticizing it. But in SWG I never felt like i was being left behind by my guild. I could help my gunsmith out with slicing for a couple days and then group right back up with others to increase my weapon skills.
If i did that in eq2 or WoW I would be told "oh man you're too low for this area now sorry".

No matter how hard I tried, I was simply unable to get in row three, spot seven of Aragorn's army in real life.

The death penalties also tend to be a bit too harsh in real life

And no matter how many times you do a bug report on that damned respawn mechanic, the developer never fixes it......such poor customer service. Is Real Life an SOE game?

there will be the MMO that you have described...
And this MMO is   -  Darkfall  ....

I love this statement from Darkfall:

Remember that people can kill you, but you can also kill them. It goes both ways. Someone being rude, and refuse to leave you alone? Kill them. Someone stealing from you? Kill them. Someone camping your favourite part of the woods? Kill them.

We are not saying killing people is nice, a good idea, or even legal - we are just trying to prepare everyone for a really great game - a game were YOU decide what you want to do, and how you will interact with other people.

KILL....KILL....KILL THEM ALL and let God sort em' out.  KILL!!!   LOL

I think Darkfall might have... issues :p

Seriously, a game that encourages players to kill eachother on a whim? "Someone annoys you? Kill them?" Think I'll be passing on that, thanks.

Yeah its also one of the things I am worried about, I mean i am all for competitive PVP but the game sounds like gankers paradise.

Well, there's Project Entropia and Second Life.

I've never played these (wanted to play them) but never got around to it.

Project Entropia is just like a big sandbox, chatroom.

In Second Life, you can build whatever you want, even like your own island! It's a huge chatroom that only accepts people 18 +.

People get killed for a lot less in many MMORPG's. Just because someone is attackable is often a good enough reason. Darkfall isn't for people who can't handle getting attacked, and killed often and without just cause.

But for a lot of people, that's what makes it so exciting!

    It's not for everyone.

hmm now maybe it's because i haven't played the Sims Online in a long time and maybe the game has changed. But i don't remember being able to walk around with a sword in a fantasy world building kingdoms and going to war with other kingdoms or establishing trade routes with those kingdoms.

I don''t remember being able to be a Brute and being hired by a merchent to protect him from bandits.  I don't remember killing animals for resources to sell to crafters.

but then again i haven't playing Sims in quite a while.

I tried what i was describing in real life, i got stopped by a police man because of the claymore on my back. I tried to explain to him that i was committed to the life of a wandering nomad. moving from town to town in search of treasure, power and respect.

He told me I probably should be "committed" and proceeded to give me a breathalyzer. the bastard took my sword too!
