Even though I would like to see a MMORPG set in the 40k era, I doubt they will make one.

There are way more races/factions to try and juggle in Warhammer 40k than in Warhammer Fantasy.

Chaos v Imperium, would disallow the Tyranids, Eldar, Orcs, Necron & Tau as playable races.

By man shall his blood be shed
For immunity of God make he the man
Destroy all that which is evil
So that which is good may flourish
And I shall count thee among my favored sheep
And you shall have the protection of all the angels in Heaven."

The ability to do Warhammer 40k Online is there, if WAR does well then possibly,

You have to remember they were working on a future type game and shelved it to work on Warhammer.

You could always build a world in space that X ammount of races are fighting over, that would lead to X ammount of fractions, all possibly fighting each other for dommanace of the planet or an ancient artifact....

Space Marines - there for the artifact.

Chaos - there too for the artifact.

Eldar - there to protect the artifact.

    Orcs, there to fight.

    Tyranids - there to spawn.

    And so on.

Allow me to ellaborate on why I doubt it.

Most companies only make 1 mmo because of how time consuming it is and the manpower needed to keep one running, fixing bugs, updateing the game with new content cost enough money as it is. Now add the money it takes to make an MMO witch is like above except over a span of atleast 1.5-2 years (for quality ones) without any revenue being made to pay off the money it is costing. So the first MMO is still being payed for after release and it would take years to be profitable enough to make a new one while keeping another one up and running. Even a company as successful as blizzard with an MMO as successful as WoW has not made a new MMO yet (even with rumors of DIablo 3 going around and saying it will be a MMO, they are still rumors). The only reason Mythic can make another MMO (IMO) is because of the merger with EA plus there game is older now and doesn't need HAS much work.

So if they do make a 40k version I don't think it will be for a few years based on money needed alone. Ofcourse I could be wrong and EA could be filthy rich and can make another MMO right away but I find them doing that doubtful. If they do they'll probably do UO next.

They already discussed this in an interview with Games Workshop at GDC (or maybe CES, I can't remember, but I read it)

They said that WAR was their only MMO project at this time, and although they would love to see a 40k license doing well (aside from the RTS) they have no plans at this moment.

Frankly, I think they will just have to wait to see how WAR does, and see if they can make something.

I will agree they won't want competing games, but then just make different games. Warhammer can be a Fantasy MMORPG and 40k can be a Sci-fi MMOFPS. Easily fixed, two TOTALLY different genres.

Personally, I would rather be playing a warhammer future mmo  I am burnt out on fantasy crap.  Necromunda wasnt a very sucessfull tabletop game compared to 40K, I think Necromunda would make a better MMO than 40K.  Necromuinda would make a great MMOFPS.  We can always hope and dream.. oh well I'll be playing WAR in the meantime.

I think before thinking to futur with a war 40K MMO we ought to keep waiting WAR which promise to be a hit... but i will only confirm when i will crush a damn dwarf head with an awfull 2 handed battleaxe before cutting his beard and put it in my belt. Then i will shout my "WAAAGG !" of victory .

I mean we are waiting for WAR, of course i will enjoy to play this kind of game, but enjoy WAR first. Let's see what it will look like... and then think to a far futur, don't you think ??

It's just one step from the sublime to the ridiculous.

the only way i can see WH40K becoming an MMO is an MMOFPS like planetside some and eventualy all the species on an all out war over multiple planet... of course the game would have to be a huge success to allow such populations the tech for each species alone would drive almost anyone crazy and would really one side the teams... and well i could probebly go on with how the teams that really on swarming the enemy to win will loose real bad in such an MMOFPS lets not even touch the melee based species like the tyrannids and other little things but a "normal" and I use the term loosly MMO would have far too many holes in lore and other areas and anger a good deal of the fan base while an MMOFPS isent really fesible with all the species while one with a few would have people asking for more playable species.... inless they made multiple games with 2-4 species each i guess that could work.... theres also the strong melee sapect to  WH40K that would be hard... come on who would charge a bunch of enemys with a sword when they all have rifles or something bigger and meaner like a heavy bolter or roket launcher or giant las cannon.

I'd love to see a 40k MMORPG, but dont think it will see the light of day in the next decade - to my great disappointment.

i could see the mmorpg engine working well since it A) goes along with the tabletop dice roll, B) ranged combat has been and is currently used in other mmos and can work with the proper balance with melee, and C) the devs would already have a good basis for the systems, statistic for weapons PC/NPCs,ect. namely the tabletop game. But im not banking on it. atleast not for a few years or so if at all

The 40k world is significantly harder to turn into an MMORPG. The primary reasoning behind this is there is no "non-army" fighting anywhere in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Armies traverse many planets and they face off against each other. An MMO set in the Warhammer Fantasy works because you still have towns and cities and individual characters can travel around in a typical MMO like environment. For a Warhammer 40,000 MMO to work, it would probably need to be modeled after a Planetside like environment. The Fantasy version lends itself to an MMORPG much better due to how the tabletop game was designed.

You could technically follow a Necromunda like approach to the 40k game, but then you lose the whole feel. No Dreadnaughts, Hellhounds, Fire Prisms, Hammerhead Gunships, Wartraks or any of the other tanks and assault vehicles that make 40k....40k.

    Some rumors for you.

As i know THQ/Relic have the w40k licence(DoW Serie), and since november last year they are looking for a MMO Senior Developer and a RPG Senior Developer.

(just google for it.. i could do it and post a link of this announce, but it should be rather simple to find it )

So.. well it is just a guess, but it could be possible that THQ/Relic is in perparation for a W40K MMO. But only the future will tell us the truth. But it would be at least very interesting to see a W40K MMO.
