What I am wondering is how large the world is, and how freely a character can explore it. I like to climb mountains and stuff when I play MMO's. I know this cannot be answered without breaking NDA so it's not a question so much as a general wondering.

"How large is the game world planned for launch?"

"The approximate size of Eriador at launch is 50 million square meters."

You can find a wealth of information on the offical website in the FAQ.

    http://lotro.turbine.com/index.php?page_id=52&siid=4

compared to wow, how would that equal up? one continent? one zone size ( heavens no plz) or maybe two continents or more (heaven plz i love to explore)

I hate to keep bringing up the same point but Turbine is notorius for making small worlds.

50 million square meters is a square 4.4 miles on a side.  About 3 or 4 WoW zones, or 12.5 Vanguard chunks, for comparison's sake.

Um, 50,000,000 meters does not equal 4.4 square miles. It equals 50,000 square kilometers which equals 31,250 square miles.

    Math: 1,000 m^2  = 1 km^2

                 1 MILE^2 = 1.6 km^2

              50,000,000 / 1,000 = 50,000

              50,000 / 1.6 = 31,250 Miles^2

    4.4 miles^2 is equal to 7.04 km^2 or 7,040 m^2

Sorry to burst your math bubble.

EDIT: Reading above I saw someone was asking if the game was instanced or not. From the videos I've seen the game is seemless, flowing from one zone to another with the name popping up on screen. I could be wrong, but I've also heard people say it was seemless.

You get a three week head start as a pre-order? Thats the way it looks to me. Am I wrong here?
You are almost spot on. The one thing you left out is that there should be a level cap of the character you take into release. There won't be any folks taking max level characters into release. The community, from what I've read, is thinking this cap will range from level 10 to level 20. No solid word yet other than a pretty reliable there will be a cap.

I thought the pre-order open beta was only a few days ahead of a fully open beta?

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

You must not be to familiar with Turbine games. Have you ever played AC or AC2???? You can not honestly say AC or AC2 where small gameworlds (well you could....but that would not be correct) Now EQII...there is a small gameworld although its grown a bit, at launch it was tiny, tiny, tiny.... DDO...well that is a good one, I don't know WTF that was suppose to be...certainly not in keeping with Turbines usual. In fact DDO was such a P.O.S. I would hope anyone involved was beaten with a wet noodle.

WOW, one word...ZONES (maps) whatever you want to call them. Yes, they were seamless but artifial feeling. Vanguard, not the first. AC2 had 3 seperate continents. (one Human, one Lugian and one Tumerok theme based) The continents where not small either. You were not running across them in 10 minutes I can assure you. To bad AC2 SUCKED. Had they at least got the fricking CHAT system straight in less then 6 months, maybe the game wouldn't have died. To bad, so sad.

Sub to AC for a month and run across Dereth, then come back and tell us Turbine is notorious for making small worlds. AC2 was just as large but I'm no mage and can not conjure up an AC2 server for you to play so you will have to take my word for it lol.

Like I showed with my amazing math skillz earlier, Aogvortex was waaaay off in his land calculations. 50 million square meters is not 4.4 square miles, its 31,250 square miles.

As far as the world size goes, SOE made SWG a lot of huge worlds, they just forgot to add content. Ditto for Farlan and Dark and Light, and Sigil and Vanguard. Give me a smaller world with plenty of thing to do any day of the week. Pixilated landscape does not = content in my opinion.

    This is getting rediculous.

Okay, let's make this easy.  Go to http://www.convert-me.com/en/convert/area and enter 50,000,000 square meters, straight from the FAQs.  Now look at how many square kilometers that is... only FIFTY!  WoW  Vortex was right!  There really IS 1,000,000 square meters in a square kilometer!

Now scroll down to the imperical section ... 19.31 square miles.  Less than 20, as I said.  Now pull out your calculator ... you DO own one of those, right?  What's the square root of 19.31 ... I'll wait while you figure out how to calculate that ... 4.39431... let's call it 4.4.  A square 4.4 miles on a side.

    Golly that sounds familiar.

Time to go back to elementary math, Kemenlith.  So much for your "amazing skillz".

OK, settle this like they do in the Army, go into the game and RUN around it, then report back to us the distance, k?

    EDIT

By the way, I don't know WTF they teach you guys is school these days but this really is one of the easiest things to figure out and all you are doing is emarrassing us Amercans....

    1 KM = 1000 meters

    1 square KM = 1,000,000 meters (1000 x 1000)

You can tell me how big the world is.

Europeans, please do not give the answer, lets see how they handle this challenging math problem. Its a damn shame an old frickin army vet has to explain this simple math problem to you knotheads.

    EDIT EDIT

The problem is made easier by the fact that you have the G*d damn answer... 50,000,000 sq Meters which translates to 50 KM...now all you need to do is convert that to miles.

If tell me 50km is 4 miles......I must be taking the long damn way to work.

    EDIT EDIT EDIT lol

Sorry, misread this part ------4.4 miles on a side.  Apologies to the writer of that. I didn't see the "on the side" part I read square lol. Thats about right It works to something like 7.0somethin KM which is alittle over 4miles. Don'tcha hate when that happens???

Well I see what I did wrong, stupid mistake... >.< but Turbine says the world is 31,250 square miles.

    uk.videogames.games.yahoo.com/pc/previews/the-lord-of-the-rings-online--shadows-of-angmar-0351b1.html

    Here's a link about it.

Aha! I think I might've found out where this conversion was messed up.

Okay, going off the 30,000 square miles turbine says the world will be (read it in an interview, site says 50 Mil km) someone multiplied by 1.6 to get from miles to km which is wrong because that only works for distance, not area. If you contiue along that line and multiply the 50,000 km you get by 1000m, there is your 50 Mil km. The correct way of doing this would be to multiply the square miles by 2.59 and then multiplying the square km by the 1,000,000 m in a square km.

Now maybe this isn't the right way, and the other way is right. My point is there is no way the amount of area they've built would fit in an area 4.4 miles on the side. It just doesn't compute. The area of Eriador is huge, go look at any Middle Earth map!

That's not an interview, but a preview article.  I suspect someone screwed up the math.  The official FAQs say it'll launch with 50,000,000 square meters, or just a smidgen under 20 square miles.  Here's the link:

    http://lotro.turbine.com/index.php?page_id=20&pagebuilder[module]=faq&pagebuilder[display_item]=19#adventuringinmiddleearth68

That's the ONLY official word on the world size at launch, at least that I've been able to find.  I wish it were otherwise.  I can't imagine how they can even remotely begin to simulate the enormous scope of Middle Earth in that scale, but that's appearantly their goal.

Look. It cannot be that small no matter what way you look at it. Go read some of the beta journals written by beta testers. The world is going to be large. No way will it only be the size of a few WoW zones.

Looks like alot of conflicting numbers

    30,000 sq miles is like aprox 174 miles x 174 miles. (30,276)

I know the world is no 4.4 x 4.4 based on my opinion (call it what you will) Thats just to small based on the published maps and pics of areas. (50 million sq meters)

What if there is a typo? You know us Americans are horrible with metrics, there is a good chance someone screwed up because they don't know a meter from a hole in the ground.

Does anyone know the dimentions of any other game???

And here is a KEY question....why the f*** are we arguing about it???? In no other game did I ever see / get wrapped up in a conversation like this....I must be bored..........or an idiot..........take your pick.

Well, people come in here to put down LOTRO and say not to play it for <insert stupid reason here>. That is what happened here with the whole "How big is the world?" question.... I dunno why people can't just leave it alone if they think it sucks and they don't want to play it.

Because if they don't get what they want in the game, they feel the need to make others who are happy with it miserable. Misery loves company, remember. Course, they will try to throw some "noble" reason at you such as they "are just looking out for other gamers" or that they want to "expose <insert company name> for their devious ways". I'm not sure why they think that other people aren't able to decide what they like for themselves based on their own experience, but to me it looks like they think just that. *shrug* I've never said this game was the greatest thing ever, but from what I know, I like it. I encourage others with some interest to at least try it out. If they don't like it, then at least they can make informed, unbiased decision.

I hear that, you know there are alot of MMO's I did NOT like. The are alot of parts of some of the MMOs I did play I did not like but for the love of pete, I never in my 1500+ post history hung around and just slandered a game for sh*ts and giggles. Its pretty f**king pointless, isn't it? You don't like something, is your mind so twisted that it needs to dwell in ugly land? F**k man, I drop the subject of a bad game so damn fast its not funny. I don't have the time to waste on it. Something I always do advise "fans" of any game to do is get the hell off this troll site and find a nice community for the game you do like. Really any community is more helpful then this one. This is just easy to navigate around a bunch of different topics while at work lol.

And there is a huge difference between trolling a subject and being objectively critical of it.

By the way, I got NWN2 yesterday and I gotta say its pretty damn nice. That game got trolled over pretty well here also. Why can't MMO's be more like RPG's???? If I'm gonna troll anything it ALL fricking MMOs with their "go kill 10 rats" sh*t. Pick me any winner MMO title and I show you a grindy piece of sh*t. I can't wait to try out a NWN2 persistant world this weekend.

    Boy, I am colorful lately...

Damn, Torak you sure are one colorful Mofo tonight

But yep I gotta agree with you.  If you don't like something, why the hell stick around?  I mean if I'm out at a nightclub or a party and there are a bunch of knuckleheads talking shit, whether they're dweebs or hard asses, I turn right around and go someplace where I enjoy the company.

Oh and by the way, how big in square miles is "Ugly Land"

Ugly land or Troll land, is approx 1x1 millimeter. It doesn't need to be very large to fit a small mind into it.

Hey, I'm in that choir, lol.

I'm glad you like NWN 2. I thought maybe you would. I'm almost (I think) through it playing a good aligned guy. After I defeat the game I'm going to go back through it again as an evil aligned to see if it's any different and try to see the content I missed from being a goody two shoes the first go through.

Oh i know you're not trolling this, in fact I don't really think anyone is, except the one who said the 4.4 miles on the side thing. That kinda seemed trollish. Anyways, I understand what you said.
