I didn't know where to put this topic in since it's not an MMO so I just put it in the pub. I hope that's ok?
I just got Oblivion and I would like some suggestions on what Race, attributes, skills, and class I should choose. 75% of my combat should be melee. Give me a sword and a shield and some armor and I'll be set. I also would like some magic support. 15% of my combat should be magic, maybe some destruction spells when things get tight, or mysticism cause i'll be using soul trap a lot. Once in a blue moon I'd like to do some sneaking, and stealing, and you know like crimes and stuff but I won't be doing enough of that to put it as a major skill. I like to take my time and have fun and steer clear of the main quest early on.... You know maybe explore and do some alchemy. I was thinking dark elf would be up my alley but I wanted some suggestions from Oblivion veterans first. Thanks in advance guys.

Cleffy is correct, play what you want race wise, then make a custom class and pick whatever skills you want and call yourself what you want.
I really like "ren's beauty pack" also. I would also get "Nord Beards" if you want facial hair.

There are some significant bonuses to race/class combos, but as others stated, they are minimal in the long run.
However, for a strong melee/magic hybrid, here is a good beginning layout that has worked well for me in the past.
Race: Dark Elf
Sign: Warrior
Class: Custom
Skills:
Blade
Block
Heavy Armor
Athletics
Destruction
Restoration
(the seventh skill can be just about anything, suggested possibilities would be mysticism, alteration, armorer, acrobatics)
In addition to providing most of what your character needs in terms of raw skill, you will find nearly all of your attributes quickly growing as they do.
Oh, and invest in a good horse early on, it will be a huge time saver as you explore the wilderness (or you can just keep stealing the things). The fastest horses are the black ones kept in the stables west of the city of Cheydinhal.

Its an RPG, its not really about the leveling anyway, not like an MMO where grinding levels is the primary focus. Its an immersive environment / story so levels are more or less trivialized anyway. Thats not such a bad thing in some ways. (Except for that exploit part ) Its not really "1st level content" like you would think in an MMO it just scales everything to your level range, so no content is barred or anything. If you are 1st level everything scales within a few levels of you. So its not really the message "don't level", its more like "it doesn't matter if you level". There is also a difficulty slider in any event so levels really don't matter because if it does get to hard you can always ramp it down. /shrug

There are obviously some better combos but nothing thats going to be game-stopping if you don't do it. If you like the Lizard guys, you can make them whatever you want. If you are into min / max, yeah you can target specific races and skill combos, if you just want to make what like, you can still do that also.
Its a single player RPG, it would not be designed very well if it gave you the ability to make whatever race/class combo BUT some of the combos would "gimp" you in some way were you couldn't complete the game. Oblivion is more about the story / open environment then the levels and math mechanics. You can play MMO's for that
I haven't played Oblivion in so long so I can't say too much, but I'd lean towards Dark Elf. They get a bonus to Destruction and a Bonus to Blade if I remember correctly (Haven't played Oblivion in 8 Months).
And on a side note, Torak. Hooah! I'm currently with the 10th Mountain. So how's Germany treatin ya?
That sounds good but is it possible to incorporate a little stealth in that build? Or should I use stealth as a minor skill?
Stealth is easy to level up without it being a major build, as is lockpicking to a lesser degree, if you can find enough lockpicks.
Alternatively, Alteration(locks) or Mysticism(invisibility, chameleon) would provide the magical equivalent to stealth, which is part of why I listed them.

Yeah I'll probably go with the khajiit or aiflinn's dark elf build.
There are so many damn glitches in the game it's noob galore though.There are so many ways to get infinite money its unbelievable. I would think they would have run a thorough check before they released the game. Oh well it will have to be fixed up in the next patch.
And also with the system of the enemies level as you do, a cheater could easily pick the skills he wants least as his major skills and level up only his minor skills. This way he could become a master of everything he wants to be good at and still face baby 1st level content opponents. I think this needs to get cleaned up as soon as possible.

I have the feeling you're talking about me and you misunderstand. I am much more a single player RPG player then an MMOG player. I love the freedom to be whatever you want without the endless grind and worrying about you have the perfect race or not. I simply never tried out Oblivion before and I want to get a comfortable feel for the game at the start with the type of character that best suits me.
With my previous post I was plainly pointing out that even though the levelling up system is designed to make you care more about rpging then levelling, the system has a big problem with the major minor skill system.
This isn't really a good combo, unless they've radically changed the skill system since I played it (which is possible, I haven't kept up with the game for several months). The system of picking main skills is counterintuitive, putting too many main skills as things you actually use a lot will make your character level quicker than his actual strength increases. I used a mod because I found them so annoying, the basic rule in the base system is 'don't make stuff you do a lot main skills'.
You really don't want to put more than one endurance-based skill as a main, or to put too many skills that you'll use a lot as main skills. If you're not careful with endurance skills, you'll hurt your total hit points a lot because you'll level up without being able to get a 5 in endurance every level until maxed. Same with putting things like destruction and blade as main skills, you're going to end up leveling without being able to put a 5 into an attribute and you're going to get stuck at a high level without having learned any good spells for that level.
If you're really trying to build a strong character, what you want to do is make your most used skills (like blade and destruction) not main skills, and avoid making endurance skills main skills. Put your main skills into schools of magic you don't use much, then track your skillups - once you have enough skillups to boost 3 attributes by 5 points (one of which should be endurance until its maxed).
Pantastic is correct after a fashion, if making the strongest character possible were your goal, the skills you should pick would be ones that you use very little.
If on the other hand, you're more concerned with just playing the damn game and having fun, my suggestion stands.

I usually play an all magic or mostly magic setup but if you want to go mostly melee youll definitely want a melee weapon skill like sword or blunt. For magic support, do not take destruction if you are going to be mostly melee.
If you want to be more agile, take light armor, if you want to be a tank, take heavy armor.
If you want to be a power hitter with big two-handed weapons dont take block, otherwise it is a good skill.
I cant remember which skill improves your critical damage when you sneak up on someone, but I would recommend taking that one. (Not at my home computer right now)
For magic support: Restoration (Very Important), Illusion (Very Imporant), Alteration (Optional)
Basically the setup I have in mind is this:
Focus: Melee
Main Stats: Endurance, Personality
Blade
Heavy Armor
Block
Sneak/Security (Whichever improves sneak damage)
Illusion
Restoration
(Armorer, Alteration, Athletics, or whatever you want)
If you take light armor instead of heavy consider Athletics, or Alteration.
With this setup you are a very deadly hitter, though you will need to focus on boosting your strength early on to fully realize this. You can tank. You have lots of hitpoints and good armor. If you take alteration, you can boost your armor further with shield spells and improve defense from the elements. However, your real strength comes with both the ability to heal yourself and move unseen.
In combat if the foe is proving difficult simply cast a heal over time spell then go invisible. Go in to stealth mode and sneak around while invisible. When your heal is finished, get off a devastating sneak attack on your foe when he least expects it. Nothing I am aware of except maybe some bosses can see invisible characters. WIth tough opponents you can repeatedly vanish and reappear, harrying your enemy with sneak attacks. As long as you play your cards right you will be all but invincible. You will be physically tough, capable of healing yourself, and capable of quickly removing yourself from combat if you get in trouble; not to mention a very deadly hitter when you catch oppponents off guard (...or even when you dont, depending on how you develop your character. That is the beauty of Oblivion).
If you're concerned with building a powerful character, then you have to worry about Oblivion's game mechanics. If you just want a character and aren't concerned with effectiveness, you can pick whatever skills look pretty in a list of skills and play whatever playstyle you want, since whether a skill is a main skill or not doesn't really matter outside of the leveling/attribute mechanics. Whatever skills you pick, it's quite possible to sneak, or cast whichever spells are appealing, or melee, wear heavy armor or light, and so on, skills just start off slightly lower and raise slightly slower if they're not main.
It's always strange that in a thread about suggestions for a character someone will act like pointing out how the basic game mechanics work is somehow bad. It's not my fault that the Oblivion developers created a counter-intuitive system for leveling a character. I don't really consider getting a character up in levels by sneaking around doing thief stuff and suddenly finding yourself completely destroyed when you decide to go try the main questline to be all that fun, so letting the OP know how the game works so he can avoid that is, in fact, in furtherance of him having fun.
This build looks good if I ever decide to focus on power. Is this build possible to deal with the toughest enemies such as Umbra? For example if you're having a tough time with her can you heal yourself then go invisible and sneak around for a bit then sneak attack her to kingdom come?
