Does WoW teach children racism?

Okay, so it's a bit inconceivable  that playing WoW will turn you into a skinhead. But if you look at the gameplay mechanics, there is definately racism there.

Orcs, Trolls, Undead, and Tauren are evil if you're with the Alliance.

Humans, Dwarves, Elves, and Gnomes are evil if you're with the Horde.

Good and evil is being determined by race, not by values. You have to admit that's pretty racist. I don't even have the option of playing an Orc that agrees with and supports the alliance's aims. If I did I would be a "traitor to the species" (sound familiar?).

Of course, if WoW did let species intermingle they might just end up with World of Peacecraft.

I don't think that they see each other as "evil" -- it's more of a political dispute between the two sides.  When you get to the advanced levels of the game, you begin to see a lot of cooperation between the factions (Tauren who give Alliance quests in Azshara, Felwood and Silithus, Blood Elves who give alliance quests in Blasted Lands and EPL, NEs who give Horde quests in Felwood and Silithus, etc.), so it's not that either side thinks the other is "evil".

As a shadow priest ill tell you rascism is alive and well in WoW.

But it's like that in real life

    White people hate black people

and black people hate white people.

    This will never change.

Why not get kids used to it in a game?

I think that would be... Classisisim.... or Specisisim.... or something like that....

(now, if you were excluded because you weren't a NELF priest, that would be racism).....

No, I'd say the parallels are more in line with nationalism than racisim....

But seriously, aren't you reading a little too deeply into a game meant to provoke conflict/competition between opposing sides?

Just a month ago my friend was wearing elf ears and I bashed him good, Heil Horde....

Seriously though, I agree with the second poster, that there are instances where cooperation between the factions happens. When you're playing a druid, both the horde and alliance share the same zone and there's no problems, in fact there's advice and help on the druid quests. As for the issue of racism, I think the faction vs faction struggle is emphasized more than race vs race.

This thread isn't a flame waiting to happen.

There's always good vs. evil, jebus man if you think like that uninstall and play Hello Kitty Island Adventure.

oh and by the way. I hate when I get shampoo in my eyes so I guess that makes me a shampoo racist

and why always black/white if u gonna go there add this too

    mexicans hate japanese

    japanese hate mexicans

    russians hate europians

    europians hate russians

add everyone in the mix not just white/black.

Well look at PvP. You can't kill a member of your own side unless you "duel" him. But creatures from the opposite side are fair game. As long as race is the sole determining factor in which side you play on the game will continue to have racist undertones.

As an Orc, I cannot got to stormwind without being attacked. As a human I cannot go to the undercity without being ravaged. The only nuetral species (goblins) is unplayable.

Yeah but that's due to factional disagreements.  Do you think that the Blood Elves hate the Night Elves for racist reasons?  Hard, because they are the same race, just two subparts of it.  Still, they belong to different factions, and so they are at odds with each other.  It's political more than it is racial.

Conflict could be based on realms, regardless of species. Say I make an orc who chooses to follow King Steven and be lawful. I might be fighting other orcs that had chosen to support Queen Maude, or those that choose to join the Bloodsail buccaneers. There are plenty of opportunities to create conflict that needn't be based on racial lines.

doesn't everyone have a right to be racist? I mean if I don't want to higher a black person do I have to if it makes me work worse? I have a right to make a living in an honest way. Why can't I be honest and not impede my business's operations. Why do I have to higher the black/smelly/funnylooking/overweight/etc.etc. man.

You think the horde and alliance share the same values? Do you know ANYTHING about Warcraft? The Blood Elves used to be part of the alliance for one thing, so it isn't all black and white as you make out...

That's just the way they set it up, really.  Because I see the cooperation between races of different factions at the higher levels of the game, I don't really see it as "racist", although the way the factions are organized is "racial".  I mean, that's kind of a baseline design of the game -- races have their own capitals and the like, and there is lore about why the races that cooperate with each other do so -- based on history and lore and not racism.

And certainly not all NEs hate Orcs or vice-versa.  I've been on RP "Peace Walks" through Ashenvale Forest with characters from all races who felt like RPing as Peaceniks.  The game is what you make of it.

Yes, roadwarriors, you have the right to be racist and to hire anyone you like for your own private business.  And all those sorts of people you mentioned in your post have the right to think you're an uneducated dummy with no class and the IQ of an ice cube.

    Just sayin'....

I think Vinzent is upset mainly because he can't enjoy the same...artistic... quality of female models that the Alliance does. Poor Horde...clearly we're discriminated against.

Dunno, stopped playing WOW last summer when school started. College + WoW = not a good combination. And I think that's something everyone can agree on, regardless of race or faction.
