I've played it for about a year so far since before beta with some breaks.
some upsides:
the world is entirely player made. theres only one dev created town. including all items except for the tools you start with, and holiday ones.
the world actually evolves, you cut down a tree it stays down till a sprout chance to be planted by the player or falls from a tree.
you make a mine it stays there for months. build a town and the wreckage stays for a year(s), with obvious signs that a town was there at one time.
well since you want some down sides.
theres no third person view, its all first person.
the game can become a grind if you pay attention to your skill numbers, DO NOT grind skill or it will be a grind, you can do something productive to gain skill instead.
and the game isn't designed for the normal MMOer, theres no so I'm here wheres some rats to kill so I can kill goblins.
edit:
by the way I am the forums wurmonline fanboy. as seen in my below signature... I'm just trained to be unbiased.
I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.
I gave this one a brief try. I kept burning up my pokey stick when I tried to make a campfire and my fire would go out. After about a half hour I felt like screaming! I might have been having a bad day. Every now and then I think about having another go but keep forgetting. I'll get around to it eventually. Maybe.
so no theres no visual character custimization except male or female. and a few other things like animation aren't in(you're first person).
although considering there is no other game that is close(possiably EvE, but thats winging it), and the fact that the community keeps you even if there was such a game I'd still stay.

Comments
basically its a community based game, with crafting and townbuilding.
and a second server: "wild"
that offers what people call hardcore PvP: skill loss, item loss. while still stick to its community and crafting roots.

I never really got this game I was on for like an hour... Just did not hook me. Maybe if I p2p it it would be better?
The Big MMORPG List
I saw a screeen shot of some players "dragon hunting". They all looked exactly the same. Is their any char customization in the game?
