Quest Based & Group Leveling a Thing of the Future?

I was just reading the article on Warhammer and it struck me that now things are kind of changing, developers are realizing we don't like grind so they have changed it into a Quest Based or Group levelling.

eg. Guild Wars' levelling system is made so that the only sensible way of leveling up is doing quests, mobs just don't give enough xp to level on, they also introduced the instancing zones system so that players can actually do quests in solo or with groups, another smart thing ArenaNet did was make the quests hard enough so that it is impossible to solo through the game, forcing you to eventually take up some allies to help you along your way. The quests advance you through the stroyline giving you xp as you go along and moving you into harder and more challenging quests.

I read an article on LOTRO and it also said that LOTRO's leveling system is also based on doing quests that smartly, at the same time advances you through the storyline of the game. Once again just killing mobs over and over again doesn't work if you want to level, they kind of force you to do the quests, quests start off reasonably easy then gets harder.

Now Warhammer have introduced the Public Quest System which gives you a series of quests on which you complete with the public, xp and such are rewarded based on participation, effort and how much you did to contribute to helping do the quest. This system involves and encourages teamwork and for people to work together which is a very good thing in my opinion, soloing is very boring to me when done at all times.

So are developers starting to learn how to keep their customers interested? Are they finally catching on to what we really want? Now  that more and more games are being released with systems such as the games I have mentioned above, it seems that gaming is finally evolving after so much waiting.

You needed Warhammer to convince you there is Quest & Group based leveling?  This has been around since 2005 and WoW.  In WoW you cannot really level on monsters either, they give crap exp; but quest rewards are good.  Like 5 quests to level.  Same goes for your example of Guild Wars.  Also alot of older mmorpgs are starting to switch over to quest based exp, especially the grindy Korean Ones.

Also Group Leveling?  Group leveling has been around since the dawn of MUDs.  Its also a way for mmo's to help make the grind legit by saying you have to group to level passed a certain level.

In my opinion, this is the influence of WoW.  WoW demonstrated that a lot of folks like quest-based leveling, and are open to group-based content as long as it is limited to some aspects of the game (dungeons, for example).

Now, not all segments of the MMO community like this.  Many folks like grinding (hence the guys playing Lineage ][ or, to a lesser extent, Vanguard, which has quests but generally features a good deal of grinding as well).  But the group that likes quests is much, much bigger, and so MMOs are being designed to get at the market that Blizzard made.  Clearly this is what WAR is trying to do, and I'm looking forward to see how succesful they are at it --- I'm optimistic because I think that Mythic is a very quality company.

Personally I hope that WAR's public quests break the trend of quest driven MMO's.   I've never been a fan of getting quests and then running around looking for someone who has the same quest as I do so I can complete the quest.   Always seemed so artificial.  The public quest sounds like a much more natural way for community interaction and questing.

What I meant is that more and more big name games ie. WAR, LOTRO are starting to pick up this idea and using it in their own, but now they use it for the storyline.
