I've been playing MMOs since the first days of UO, and I've seen some good and some bad launches through the years. I have never, however, seen a game launch as badly as VG. The minimum system requirements are misleading; my system meets them, but I am only able to play at Very High Performance and at the lowest possible resolution and even then my frame rate is so bad that I doubt I'll be able to survive once I get into high aggro areas. Bugs have kept me from being able to play for more than a few sessions, and when I can play, broken game mechanics have made it difficult to get a real feel for the game. I am definately disappointed.
I am also, though, going to sink the money into a new graphics card and a second gig of RAM. I'm not cancelling my subscription or putting it on hold until things are fixed. I'm even going to continue logging in (or trying to) on my existing rig while I wait for the box of happy goodness from NewEgg to arrive.
Why?
Because I have faith in the developers. I believe in the vision they have for VG, and I believe in their ability to realize that vision over the next few months. It's a shame that the game was launched with so much work still to be done to make it playable, much less polished, but I accept that this is a decision that was out of their hands. I'm not thrilled with the idea that I'm going to have to pay for the game while it still feels like it should be in closed beta, but I'm even less pleased with the possibility that the game itself will be pulled before the original vision is ever brought to fruition. For those of us who want a deep game, a game in which players have the kind of freedom that made PnP roleplaying so much fun, I can't help but feel this is our best hope. I'm afraid that if it fails because it was launched too soon, the market will assume we only want games like WOW that require little more than button mashing from players.
I have hope that in a few months, when things are working as intended and all the game mechanics are in place, those of us who were here for the launch will be able to look back and know that it was worth the growing pains.

I've got some nice swampland in Florida for sale!
Keep the faith. Drink the Kool-Aid and wear your purple robe and Niki sneakers for the mothership will arrive!
Grape,
Okay, so if hanging in there because I believe this particular development team can pull this off is such a bad idea, why are you still hanging around? Surely you have a reason, too?
I'm still hoping they can pull it off. Haven't broken my discs or cancelled my sub -
Just tonight's patch was a real downer for a lot of us. If your class wasn't affected in the way that some of ours has been, its easy to not see this as a huge setback.
Gaming? That's not gaming!
That's just people sat 'round in costumes drinking...
