WWII Online is a true virtual battlefield. The settings is as the name says WWII and the arena is Europe.
As of the price (to get that over with) it is 13.00$, and there is quite often free trials to check for free trials go here, and press "Gettig Started->Free Trial".
WWII Online differs from other MMOGs and by far all other war sims, by having one continuous map, no zones, no teleporting just one big map ½ the size of Europe.
This map from WWII Onlines MapMaker TGPO (www.tpgo.net) will illustrate this:
[his server is down will show later]
CRS (the developer) is adding more & more towns to this arena every patch, and they generally patch a major patch every 6-8 weeks, and some 2-3 minor patches in the meantime.
Here is a small image of the area that holds towns yet, roughly 120X240 km on Mainland Europe, and most of SoutEast England (Click the here for a very very large version of same image, possibly need to righ click and choose "save target as")
The game is constantly evolving to add more towns and features, and the objective is to end up with a full European Map, and then move on to other theatres of war.
Now for some screenshots. I will put in some of those, but remember the game is 1 or 2 weeks of from a MAJOR overhaul of the graphics in regards of vegetation. This will make it look like this:

Screnshots:
And yes it is GREAT fun, just join a squad as soon as you can!
WWII Online a great combined arms simulation. You can pilot planes, drive tanks and trucks, sail ships, man anti-tank guns, man anti-aircraft guns or take to your feet as one of 5 different infantry classes. There is so much variety that if you ever get bored with one aspect of the game you can switch to a different vehicle or class. For example, if you get bored with infantry play, you can always spawn in as a tank and get a totally differnent experience! It's like multiple games in one persistant gameworld!
Unlike your traditional RPGs, your advancement is tied up to your branch in the military. So if you advance to Captain in the Army (by successfully completing missions), you'll be a captain no matter what class or vehicle you play in the Army (infantry, tanks, AT guns, AA guns and trucks). There are three different branches in the military, each with it's own units (Army, Navy and Air Force). You gain rank (levels) in each branch separately without having to create a new character. With each new rank, you get access to better equipment and the ability to post missions for other players.
The vehicles and weapons are all modelled realistically to their historical counterparts. This means that each side and each piece of equipment has it's own positives and negatives. The definitely adds a lot to the strategy part of the game.
If you like FPSes but are looking for something a little deeper and more challenging, where your actions have a greater meaning in the persistant game world, then YOU GOTTA TRY THIS GAME!
