Wild West MMORPG: Frontier 1859

Frontier_Logo Who has never dreamed of being a cowboy? Well, fun as it is, the other day I was complaining that no company has ever done a Western based MMOG and that it would be a nice change and then, immediately, I found out about Frontier 1859. Awesome! I should complain more often.

Frontier is the first Old West based MMOG in production. It's not only an innovative project but a very well elaborated one too. The creator of the game spent over 10 years doing research on the history of the old west. One thing we can be sure of, it will be a real class history to play this game! The locations and events are very realistic - from the silver rush to the ghost towns of today, they are really creating a mirror from the past in this game!

The game world is set in the American Old West, somewhere in California. It's a skill based game where you can choose the skills you want for your character, restricted by a cap on the number of skills you can have at once.

There will be PvP but controlled and with consequences. Severe consequences mind you. The game will have a reputation system where, if you are an outcast, a real villain, when you are captured, and one day you will be, unless you are a lucky guy, you can expect to be hanged. Yes, public execution followed by permanent death for your character. There will be aging in the game too, so not only outlaws or horse thieves will visit the morgue, but everyone else too, sooner or later. Hopefully they will make death by aging something that requires many months or even a few real life years to happen!

The races available to play will be humans only of course, but you will have a wide option of ethnic groups to choose from. The native American tribes like Shoshoni, Washoe, Paiute to the settlers, the colonizers of the old west that were from over 20 different ethnic groups such as Englishmen, Scotts, Chinese, Germans, Mexicans, etc.

Concept_art That’s something very cool, red natives versus the white guys, many interesting conflicts can happen. But the game isn’t all about fighting, they incite and encourage people to make a living in the game, build a house and establish as a farmer, a cattle breeder, or be a crazy miner or a ghost town explorer!

Another strong point of the game is the fact they already have the expansions planned, the first one will be Frontiers 1860 and so on, adding one game year for each new expansion.

Something that worries me is the fact that they don't have a publisher yet. You can't make a MMOG without one (unless you have the cash, which they don’t) but hopefully they will find a partner soon, because it would be a shame to not have this game on the market in the next years!

That website's been up for YEARS.

    Looks great!

Unfortunately, it's really nothing more than someone's wishlist for an Old West game. They've got some design concepts, they've got some overall plans, they've got some concept art...but no actual game.

I'd love to see an Old West game, but no one's going to develop this one--though they might steal their ideas--since this one doesn't actually exist at all. It's just a nice Website with concepts.

I agree the concept is really cool! However they, need to get this moving before someone else picks up the idea!

Hi OoverO. Daniel B. Mcmillan, the disgner of Frontier 1859, is active in looking for partners to start the development of this game. This can take a while, yes, but it is definitely worth the waiting. Setting up a game can be awfully hard. Luckily, us gamers, only have to spend our money on buying them.

    Good of you to reply.

I certainly wish you all the success you can handle. Have you spoken with traditional venture capitalists? The amount of money a start-up MMO needs is pretty small by their standards, and the potential return is quite good.

And, again, be careful of what you reveal--a lot of companies will steal your ideas and, next thing you know, there'll be an Asian-made version of your game out two months from now, albeit with bad English and whatnot.

It looks like it would be a fantastic game, I hope this Daniel B. Mcmillan gets the backing he needs. Great concept, it's what the MMORPG community needs.

All they need to do is this for a successful start.

    1. Make it a grind. You know the kind that lets people die in their chairs and invest thousands of dollars into getting to lvl 45 Cowboy.
    2. Scrap those photorealistic graphics. Get some korean company to make you anime characters.
    3. Bloom. Lots and lots of bloom, gamers shouldn't be able to see the game. It also cuts down on texture dev time.
    4. Get a rich guy drunk
    5. Don't sleep with his wife. WHATEVER YOU DO.
    6. Okay go ahead, she controls the money anyhow.
    7. Make the females have big boobs, also add an Elf/dwarf/orc race.. Come on we all know they were in the wild west!
    8. Magic system>: I don't know about you but cowboys with magic sounds like a winner to me!
    9. Add Pirates, because pirates are cool.
    10. Epic classes should be added like Cowadin,Cowceror, and of course Couge.
    11. Don't add pvp, no one likes it anyway.
    12. Ok add pvp in after release and make it half assed, that way people play longer waiting for you to fix pvp.
    13. Screw up the game system no less than 3 times, that way you have people waiting a long long time, thats more $$ baby.
    14. Throw in a red mage.

That my friends is how they will make their game prosper! Quick someone other than myself send this list to them STAT!

IF they want their game to equal the graphic level of the Current EQ, they will need 5 million to 10 million.

IF they want their game to equal the graphic level of the current SWG, EQ2, VG, they will need 25 million to 35 million.

I personally would be for seeing a wild west type mmorpg just for the fact it would be d-i-f-f-e-r-e-n-t from every single mmorpg. The Tolkenisque market (swords n sorcery, elves and orcs, etc...) is beyond over-uber-saturated. The sci-fi market is doing ok. Not yet saturated.

This company should also try foreign investors! The incredibly revolutionary Anarchy Online was created by a tiny, company out of Norway. Astonia 3 was created by a company out of Germany. Strive for Power was created by a company out of Britian. Foreign companies, and investors, are far more likely to take risks, and most of all - think outside the box!

The graphics in EQ1 are just fine. Too many game developers are wasting money on graphics that most gamers can't run on their systems, and the players that have top of the line systems still have frame rate issues in crowded areas.

Content is much more important. A Wild West MMOG has a lot of potential.

Hi Astropuyo. I assume your post was ment to be sarcastic. I will compare your ideas with the real concepts from Frontier 1859.

    1. F1859 will be based on your skills, not howmany gold you can invest onto your character. Even a ''newb'' will be able to kill a veteran.
    2. The graphics will look very realistic. They will translate real-life footage into in-game graphics.
    3. As I said this game will look very realistic. I don't think it will have a bright light in the background.
    4. Daniel B. McMillan is active in seeking partners. I have my doubts on your idea of collecting money to invest in this game. There are other ways than alcohol.
    5. I'm not sure how the female characters will look like. What I do know is that didn't had plastic surgery in the 1850's. You wont be able to play an other type of character than human.
    6. There will be such, although not the time your used to. The Native American tribes will have to ability to control enchanting, making potions and other rituals.
    7. If you think of pirates being thieves, then you are right. PCs will be able to do whatever they want, including robberies, organised bank attacks, etc. If a player will take such actions, there are coincidences bound to it. For example he will be locked in jail or even hung on a rope.
    8. All players experienced will be based on skills, not their level or amount of gold they can invest.

For more information, visit the official website of Frontier 1859.

I heard about this game awhile back because i am a big old west fan. the last time i looked at their site, it hadn't been updated in a year or more. seems to be pretty much vaporware, unfortunately.

No doubt I was just being an ass and wasting .3 megs of the interwebs space.

I actually can't wait to see if this game will ever come out, I want some gun fighter games in a major way.

Though you sure there won't be orcs?! I mean whats a mmo without orcs, and big breasted elves.

    =)
