I'm looking for a new MMORPG. Right now the only thing i'm playing is Lineage II in open beta (where i can't get in half the time) and noticed that city of heroes is coming out this month .
Is the game any good? Here's my preferences for MMORPG's:
-Good graphics
-nice enviroments/well though out world (is the game worth exploring basically)
- Fun combat
- Good missions/quests
- PvP
- Unique character custimization
- Unique character abilities and classes
I know it's alot. Doesn't have to match up to all of 'em

One of our illustrious staff members, Kunou, wrote a four-page preview on City of Heroes. He worked fervently in-game (man, that must be tough work there Kunou! :P) but he did it. Take a peek!

I played SWG.... It sucked..
And yeah, i did read the preview of City of Heroes that the staff wrote up on but i thought i'd get a second oppinion from the players because i can honestly say most previews of MMORPG's have been a little "one sided" towards the game.

Let me stop you there for a moment.
Please do not confuse our Previews from our Reviews. Our Previews give gamers a "sneak peek" into a game that has yet to be released. We leave our heavy criticisms for the Reviews.
Now I will tell you right now that every single staff member with MMORPG.COM are gamers just like you. We pride ourselves to give honest reviews of the games. Take a look for yourself!
Now we don't stop there. The real influence on a game's ratings comes from our members, just like you. Even a game's Hype is measured, by you, via our "Hype-meter". When a person sees the Highest Ranking MMORPGs on the main page they are looking at the ratings from you guys, not us. The only thing we do not do is openly criticize on the discussion boards, because quite frankly, those are your boards for your benefit.
So, please do not misinterpret us as being "one-sided". We do not shovel out our exclusive material because we have a quota to meet. We do it because we think you will honestly benefit from it. All of the veteran members will tell you we do not get paid to do this.

Based on my own experience with CoH, the preview is dead-on.
If you like the genre, and you're not too interested in attacking other players, then I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Yer right, but thats what a Preview is. It's a sneak peek at what will make the game worth playing. It's meant to highlight the good aspects of the game. A Review on the other hand is where we take the gloves off, no holds barred, tell it like it is. So if yer looking for a Review then you'll have to wait a while till I've had a chance to put some time into the live version (or maybe another Staffer).

You have got to be kidding......?
Maybe it's been improved since I stopped playing. But it used to be nothing more than gank-fests outside of the cloning facilities.....

I am into the genre. I love the fact you can be a super hero. The fantasy settings in most MMO's are getting old (not saying i don't like fantasy, they just haven't done anything "over the top" and still make boring castles and forests).
Anyways, i like to PvP though which is kind of a setback because i heard this game has no PvP.
I thought the game would be brilliant if it was heroes vs. villains and the players could be one or the other.
Also, how does the world work? Is it just one city everybodies in? Can you go outside the city? I have no idea how big the game would be if it was only in one city.

It's one city, but seperated into different zones, and it's pretty big.

Ok 2 more questions i couldn't find on the site
1. Are there pedestrians walking around town and driving cars kind of like a GTA atmosphere?
2. Can every superhero fly? Or is it only certain types.

1) Yes, pedestrians walking and driving all over the place, stuff goign on all around just like a regular city.
2) Any hero has the option of picking up the Flight power pool at level 6.

Flying at level 6? That seems a bit too early. For some reason I thought of it as a medium to high level power.

Getting access to the power pool is not the same as flying, there are other powers in the pool you have to get first.

I got into beta last night (this morning really about 1:30AM). Here is what I gleened:
Character Set-up is great - you can customize your appearance in so many different ways it is mind boggling. I spent a half-hour playing around with my appearance & I had an idea going in what I wanted to look like.
Quests/Missions - While I didn't get too far this morning, I have to say I like the way missions run. If you get a mission to clear out a building of bad guys & find something, as soon as you enter the building, you zone in to your own building (nobody can come in and beat-up something you need to defeat in order to complete the mission). Also, as you travel around the city completing missions, you can also help crime victims from street thugs & the like.
UI - it is ok, but i like a bit more customization (I like to move things to different spots on my screen until I get the perfect set-up for the game) Note: Horizons UI was the best I've played so far.
Movement & controls - Uses ASWDQE - I am not crazy about that, I would prefer using the arrow keys myself (There is a way to remap the keys, but i just wanted to play last night)
Lag - Slim to none (I was in Atlas Park with about another 60-70 PC's & another 20-30 NPCs & everything was smooth sailing.)
PvP - there is none (They said that they want to have an PvP arena in the future, but to me this is not a big concern)
Loot - no loot, you get enhancement (permanent) & inspirations (temporary), they can be obtained from defeating villians, as a reward from your contacts or from completing a mission. I don't know how distribution is in a group (since I did not group last night)
Animation - from what I have seen, I would say excellent (some boards say that some of the attack annimations look the same, but I didn't notice that in my first 2 hrs of gameplay)
Coolness Factor - Oh VERY cool, just walking around makes you feel like you stepped into a comic book & seeing toons flying overhead is a sight.
Overall - I can't wait to get home from work tonight to log-on (and my wife has a business meeting, so as soon as I get home I'm in...)
I'll take some time tonight to see if I can customize the UI & remap some of the keys.

Everything on your screen is movable, I don't think anything in my setup is in it's original place. Also, a little known tip, if you hold ALT down a second row of power hotkeys pops up, and then goes away when you let go of alt.
All keys remappable, go to Menu --> Options --> Control. There's actually a whole second set of control keys that are unset as default, so rather than replacing the WASDEQ keys you can just bind the arrows in the second set. Can bind a second key for every control in the game.

Thanks for the info - I will have more time tonight to experiment.
Keep the faith!

Just so you know, directly from the patcher:
"The arrow keys have been added to the default key bindings"
And people say the devs don't listen to the players ?
