So is this going to be another game where i can only skill up say weapons by learning books for months, but not by actualy using the weapons? And get ganked soon as you leave the newbie area?
Fun!
That will only happen if the vocal minority hammers their forums non-stop when it opens with only a few "majority" players bother to give input. If we don't tell them what we expect we won't get it

Ok never played the pen & paper game, as I said before only read a few books, but what exactly is the difference between the "old" and the "new" World of Darkness? Is it similar to the premise of the Underworld movies or is totally different?
Oh come to think of it I did play Hunter Reckoning too, still don't think I have a good idea of what WoD is like.
I believe, the only acceptable thing to do, is make the game more accesible to the mainstream, then if with enough financial success, thats the time for hardcore fans to demand content that is true to the books. We get the best of both world. Either way, I hope there is light at the end of this tunnel. Because I do believe I would be subscribing to this just to help it develop.

I've been waiting for this game since my first MMO 3 years ago. I havn't played the pen and paper version since 96. If I was close to getting out of the military I'd love to try and join the DEV team after I get my B.S. in Game design.

Originally posted by SonyaBlue so my question is this, do you want to play a game made by a company that cant even come up with an original idea but has to keep recycling old ones?
We're talking MMOs here. How can you even ask that? Yeah, true, but how many of those MMO companies ripped THEMSELVES off? and when they did, how many DUMBED down thier product? One did, SOE But this no soe product in any ways. Much can be said about CCP and EVE but that they dumbed it down is not one of them.

Ever since the first book I read, so many years ago, about this subject matter I thought it would make a great mmo getting awesome rvr abilities involved. Good luck to you!

I think mostly the difference in the rules is they pared things down quite a bit..we now have the one "universal" book (World of Darkness) which reflects an almost Call Of Cthulu (sp?) approach to humans discovering the world is more supernatural than they've been led to believe all their lives. No "empowered" hunters at this point. Then, once they released that "mother" book of rules, they put out the sourcebooks for Vampire, Werewolf, Mage, and most recently Promethian. Which explain the history of each group and how their characteristics affect the main rules. The whole game got a rewash from the "goth-punk" vibe into a more modern "X-Files/Cthulu" vibe.
And bear in mind that even in the original WOD, the different races didn't have massive faction wars against each other bcause of their need to stay hidden from the "cattle"..to stay true to the material you can probably expect to fight other groups rarely and more likely inside your own "race" via inter-clan warfare. So instead of faction warfare I would be more predisposed to RvR like DAOC with specific areas geared to it but not required for ALL the rank-and-file to play in. Toss in the near extreme xenophobia amongst the "races" from nWOD and that would make RvR even more likely.
and in truth I agree that nWOD will probably be the source for whatever MMO they put together because right now you only really have 4 "big" races to work with (5 if they incorporate the upcoming Changeling), the powers are very clan-specific (making "classes" possible), and there's a lot of flexablity due to lack of hard-and-fast lore.
....heh, I hope DB and company take me more seriously now then when I broached them about possible IP theft in their forums for Dark World online...I surmised this was coming long before the merger :P
if they use the nWOD ruleset they probably will have to do that because some clans of Vampires can only use certain Disciplines unless they pay an ungodly amount of XP for them..some cabals of Mages are predisposed to certain types of magic, etc...Archtype (class) plays a very big role in the source material
(shudder) it could be worse and we could have a class/skill model ala 9dragons....
I've always been skeptical of the idea of a vampire MMO. I thought a big part of vampire appeal is how exotic they are. Millions of humans, per vampire. Make an MMO out of it, and suddenly you have millions of vampires, and I don't think they'd seem quite so appealing anymore. They wouldn't even be thin-bloods, but more like characters that'd be about cool as those people who make themselves sick on cow's blood, and spend way too much time in goth chat rooms.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
Cryptic Studios ran into the same problem with their project, obviously.
But if CCP sticks with their expertise in building such large playing spaces as in EVE (which, yes, would be much more difficult given the density of content that would need to be in the World of Darkness as opposed to New Eden), it could work. It would be quite easy to make supernaturals the vast minority among hosts of NPC mortals in a sufficiently large space. Something the size of Vanguard's world may work if the population is capped at something less than 1500. Fill it with NPC mortals with AI routines similar to those in Bloodlines and have at it.
Favorites: EQ, EVE | Playing: None. Mostly VR and strategy | Anticipating: CU, Pantheon
Doesn't WoD cover Vampire, Werewolf, and Mage? Gods, but do I ever hope that it's not a Mage: The Awakening MMO.
I've wanted a horror themed MMO for quite some time now. It would be a significant let down if they went with Mage.
As for everyone playing vampires, I'm sure that's the way that it'd be at the start, but if they coded the game around the WoD rules rather than changing everything for their limited idea of a MMO (ala DDO) then playing a Vampire would actually be the most difficult characters to play (as I understand the game setting).
* Your character would never be able to go outside in the day time. * You could (in all probability) play your character during daylight hours (game time), but it would be extremely weakened (all rolls would be restricted by the character's level of Humanity) and the player would be limited to the sewers or to the insides of buildings. * They wouldn't be allowed to overtly break the masquerade less the character be hunted down (in a MMO this would probably result in the character being tossed into a fancy tutorial of some sort, but I'd love it if they were sent to torpor and be unable to be played for about a real life day). * The low level of Humanity for most new players would mean that their characters would frenzy more often, thus being more likely to break the masquerade. * The first time that two vampires met each other they would have to succeed in subduing the Predator's Taint or freak out and attack the other player or, most likely for a MMO setting, run off for a short time (ala having fear cast on your character). To prevent this CCP would need to make Elysiums of sorts where players could meet for the first time... I suspect that they'd downplay this whole aspect though.
Most new vampire players probably wouldn't take "The Beast" into consideration and would end up killing the humans that they fed on, hunting everything & everyone, and so on and losing a lot of their Humanity pretty quickly.
They'd also most likely want to use their powers fairly often and end up burning a lot of their vitae, forcing their characters closer to frenzy when it's not necessary.
Combine all of the above and you have a lot of players receiving a quick & hard lesson about playing a vamp.
Hopefully the starting tutorial will show the player that playing a Vampire is not all about killing wantonly or showing off their powers.
If they made the game like they're supposed to (eg; not do as DDO done and break/change core rules to fit their idea rather than change their idea to match the setting / IP) then I wouldn't be surprised if the difficulty of the vampire character chases a lot of people off to the Weres, or even the humans.
I have no idea what it's like playing as a Were though. I would suspect that killing wantonly isn't such a bad thing for them. So perhaps most players would find that they enjoy playing a Were rather than a vamp with all of the vampire's restrictions.
Unfortunately, creativity in the MMO scene seems to be a thing of the past. I could SO go on and on about the setting, about ideas, about suggestions... but I realize that it's futile.

While true, you could always make a case that different servers=different worlds. And im pretty sure it would be hard to run millions in a single server.

The CCP devs will be with the human faction and will be handing out one-shot silver bullets to all who play with them.
