Four melee classes, two support classes and one ranged class and no magic origin damage dealing class? not sure how I feel about that.
Is there a lore related reason or any reason why they didn't include a mage class in this game?

Also, the "lore-master" class in LOTRO is as close to a mage as you'd see. It was more than likely designed to fill that role. Of you read up on that class you'll see that it plays like a magic using class, with a twist.
Hope this helps!
From there FAQ
From what is known, there were very few wizards in the whole of Middle-earth through the ages. You will not be able to play a Wizard, but a mage-like class will be available to you. As Magic plays such a special role in the Tolkien lore, we are taking great care to provide players with the abilities they expect, within an appropriate context for the Tolkien mythology.
ROFLMAO.....OMG....Wheez.....gasp.....gasp...
Sorry, the hilarity of your question struck me funny. Yes, there is a very, huge, can't get around it, never gonna change so forget it lore reason: There were only 5 wizards in Middle Earth; Gandalf, Radagast, Saruman, Alatar and Pallando. That's it, and that's all folks. As such, players can't be "wizards" as you expect them, hurling fireballs and lighting bolts left and right. You just didn't see that happen in the books or in the movies, although this game is based on the books, not the movies.
There is the Loremaster class, which some have said it sounds like an alchemist. That's as close to a "wizard" as you get.
Edit: Oh, additionally, Those 5 above mentioned wizards were not human, dwarf, hobbit or elf. They were a race called Maiar, which were more in tune with "magic" that those other races. The Maiar race is not available for play at this time and there have been no indiciations that it ever will be. If Tolkien Enterprises gets their say, and believe me they will as they sign off on everything Turbine does with this license, the Maiar never will be playable.

I'm not going to get into such a dorky debate as LOTR lore, but as far as Alatar, Radagast, and Pallando go from Khalathwyr's post we don't even know if they're still on Middle-Earth.
Well i'm glad you're easily amused
I did read up on the Lore Master and it sounded to me like a crowd controller. Actually it sounds very much like controllers in CoH with roots, holds, pets and modest damage dealing abilities in general.
