Hey guys. I have played CoH/CoV on and off for the past few years, mostly off. I don't really have a high level character yet, but I'm looking into getting back into it. I was wondering what advice and tips you vets could give me.
Umm... that's an awfully big area to cover. Some questions: 1) Will you be playing CoH or CoV, or both? 2) How long has it been since you last logged in? 3) What did you play before? What did you like / dislike? 4) Why did you stop playing before? Answers to those questions might help better tailor the advice to suit your needs.
1.) I currently have both games
2.) I last logged in about September 2006
3.) I've played healers and scrappers, I enjoyed both. I do prefer ranged combat versus melee, and I enjoy healing quite a bit.
4.) I stopped before because I was a power gamer, playing 8+ hours a day for a couple of weeks. And I think this game is alot less fun when you do that. However now I have less time to play and I think this game is perfect for me.
No specific tips but wanted to say that I do play the same exact way -- get on maybe 1 or twice every few weeks for 2-3 hours. THe nice thing is that I can jump right into a team and hit a few missions, maybe level and move on. This is on the Freedom and Victory servers anyway.
If you're a powergamer and you love being a necessary ingredient to teams and dont mind some debt from a bad team go brute. its probably the funniest role I've ever played in any MMO it must be experienced seriously. IF PvE is all you care for maybe EM/Stone or stone/stone u can even get a slot on RSF. there is also some hardcore hero pwoergamer roles in PVE but I'm not too sure how those play out
btw, EM brutes we darn near one shot everything around is with full fury. loved my EM/ELA very good in PvE second only to /stone in PvE. /ELA much better at pvp then /stone needless to say.
you might want to try defenders and trollers too. kin defender is probably the bomb is my guess. rad defender might be good for the debuffs, rez, a little heals. btw, buffing is way more iumportant in CoX then healing is my humble opinion. Buffs can make someone a god in CoX. So I'd focus on being a good buffer not a healer. so go good buffing like rad defender or kin defender i'd pass on Empathy but feel free to get a second opinion on that anaofalye or amasir would know hero side better
The best thing you can do is make a good name for yourself on every team you're a part of. Try to stick to the same character once you find one you really like playing. And be true to your character type without trying to be somethign else... (scrappers and blasters are for dealing damage, tanks are for taking damage, defenders and trollers heal and buff) If you try and make a hybrid you're not going to be as effective on your team and you'll get some resentment when trying to fill a role other than your own.
Make use of the polics band (or newspaper for villains) missions. they are quick experience and easy to get missions for solo or team play and keep the ball rolling. When you qualify for safeguard or mayhem missions, lower your difficulty so you'll be successful and get the temp power reward.
If you are on a team, stay with the team and don't wander. Let each archetype do their thing. Tanks may want to herd up the mobs before anyone starts attacking. Blasters may want to pull individual mobs so don't stand in line of sight and get aggro too soon. Typically the tank will be the one directing the team to the next spawn so they usually should call the shots.
If you have run into bad situations and make mistakes, try and learn from them, and also recognize when you and your team is outclassed and the risk outweighs the reward. In other words, don't keep biting off more than you can chew.
Oh, lol, and don't make cute remarks at that sexy girl cause she's probably a guy... lol, I had to add that.
EDIT: I forgot to add one very important thing. Read the official CoH forums, peruse the guides and learn as much as you can for your archetype as well as how to handle each type of enemy. the forums are your big time friends.
Well if you enjoy healing quite a bit and like ranged, that pretty much defines a Corruptor. They get primary powers of nukes and secondary is heals/buffs.
Masterminds are also technically ranged, your pets do most of the work. You can solo very well but can get teams easily as you are significant dps.
You'll probably get through early levels quicker in Heroes with sewer teams and hollows missions. I know I got a defender to 11 in only 2 days playing casually (6 levels in first 2 hours sewer team).
Based on your love of ranged combat and healing, you might want to consider a Defender. If you are something like a Radiation / Radiation Defender, you get ranged attacks and some healing / rezzing capability while teams will love you every time they go up against an Archvillain / Giant Monster because of Rad's debuff capabilities.
Villain side, Masterminds are great. You won't get healing, but Robots are a good ranged pet. Just make sure you use a keybind guide to set up your Mastermind keys on the keypad and controlling your minions becomes a lot easier. Corruptors also have a number of options you might find interesting.
