I really want to play a fresh mmorpg but nothing has come up

WAY too many fantasy games, not enough good walk around sci-fi.

SWG was really good at start (expt that it was freakin hard to finds items sence all were playercrafted) then quit .. you know why.

Anarchy online i have to say is the best out there right now, easy to understand then gets more complex slowly

    Neocron .. very clunky

RFOnline has that Freaky clean asian cartoon vibe.  Everything is just too clean... i'm not saying i like dark games but just too clean...

EvE is o.k.... it trys to be a tactical space game but to me, too much (F1,F2..Orbit Target 1000m) thats it...

I really hope Huxley will work out

Well you're right about the overly saturated fantasy genre MMO's.

If you like the Sci-fi genre, what about Tabula Rasa?  Have you looked into that?

    How about Moonunit? or Dweezle?

Yeah names don't matter much, I mean if you are superficial enough to judge books by the cover, you may as well stick to pictures, because you obviously can't read...

Speaking of being able to read, perhaps you should read your own quote and then fix it...

It's over on the Games in Development list, on the lefthand side of your screen.

Looks fairly interesting if you're into Sci-fi.  I personally haven't done much research on it. Let me know what ya think.

Might wanna take a look at Fallen Earth, Twilight War, Huxley, Star Trek Online, and Stargate Worlds as well.  All of those have a Sci- Fi type of vibe going on.

Well there ya go... That's a pretty good list.

I would think the last two are fairly solid with regards to development.  Could the others fall into the "Vaporware" category?

That depends on what they are trying to sell.

What I was describing in general terms was the "trends" in games.
People have said a game Like UO can't ever happen again, and I agree for the general population it can't. For a niche it can, and that is what my reply was pointing to.

The general audience is tapped out and now it's time for games to focus on demographics in playstyles not covered in the "general definition" or casual player.

The new PvP games coming may cover some, but not all, and not for the amount of time to really get the most. At least if the design is to easy or trivial as I defined it earlier. Then you are faced with possible boredom in gameplay.

So a UO modeled game can succeed IMO, but for a niche. It will also succeed long term if it has meaningful challenging play and game mechanics. With a real sence of player accomplishment that both "hardcore" and casual can achieve, but over time. The accomplishment must still be real and valid.

UO had no Endgame in it's design, I know as I had players maxed and new and had as much fun with either. I had no doubt on any given night I'd have fun and stories to tell the next day. No games today, not Vanguard, Not WoW, or EQ2 do this for me. Also each of these games have an inherent EndGame factor because of the quest/level/raid progression or the architecture of their design. The three are very similar...

So in saying it depends on what is being sold, a simple fact I understood in Vanguard beta was this... the game itself was'nt fun. I was bored most of the time. It was never performance or bugs, as I understood it was beta. I've just played these games enough to know what I like and what is entertaining, and saw very little of it in Vanguard.

Also no real unique sence of character modeling or acomplishment, becuase of the way a level class sytem works, and the balance concerns, you end up with class character and race very similar. Even diplomacy and how you aquire expressions (cards) makes each diplomat pretty much the same with race/class differences in expression values only.

They had some great ideas in Vanguard, eliminating trainers and learning skills from mobs (some of that is still in I think), but not enough, not bold enough. It may have been time and money, but the game ended up on the same path as WoW, just stumbling behind the gorrilla as it gobbles up all the loot (subscribers).

Just my opinion, but publishers want the money now, not later... so it's fast and stunted growth, not slow and steady. Time will tell with Vanguard, and I may be wrong. I'm not wrong in knowing it's not for me... that's for sure.

Last item... Diplomacy is cool if they do it right. It won't mature for at least a year, or possibly longer. It has the potential to alter the game world and content, but in a way that won't make developers uncomfortable. Because these changes will be under their control via quest or lever. For the player though it can do something about the Endgame weakness that I described, by providing variety of content and things to do beyond raids. So that part in a year or more could make me change my mind about Vanguard... if it happens.

yea i would have to agree, although there are many other people that like some of the MMOs that came out. I would like to say there are more peeps that thought they were crap then the ones that like them. I put all my attention to the F2P MMOs cuz the P2P weren't worth the time or the money

all of you that think the last 3 years of mmos suck need to stop playing games, go outside and enjoy life

THe fact is that you want a game that you need to devote hours and hours of time into to get anything out of

that isnt the way the market is going, the reason you think these games are borign and mindless is because the desighners realize that today the average mmo player is the casual gamer so they make the games to acomodate the people that are casual

Most people dont want to play a game as a second job or a substitute for a social life, they want to be able to loggin in on boring weekinght after work, school etc and just have fun for an hour or two and feel some semblence of an accomplishment

THe sooner everyone accepts that the old school evercrack games are gone for good the sooner we will all be much happier

The new EQ2, better than ever befor !
    don't click this link...

This game will fail, and I know this sounds retarded, but this game will fail in America due to the name.... They should have kepted it as it was or came up with a shorter name or even something besides 'Sword of the New World' (WTF)...

Americans believe in the KISS(Keep It Simple Stupid) method and the cool factor, even with our video game names. We do not want to play a game thats name is almost a freaking sentence or that sounds freaking retarded. People will take one look at the name and say to themself's, thats a stupid name, and pass it by.

Picture some kids outside saying "Hey dude, we gotta get going our guild in WOW is about to start that instance run". Now picture the same guys with 'Sword of the New World' as their game.  "Hey dude, we gotta get going our guild in SOTNW (WTF?!?) is about to start that instance run".....

Oh btw I agree with the OP this is borderline disgusting with what the MMORPG developers of the world have put out there for us. And once you look past AOC, Huxley, and WAR it looks like we are up for another 2 years of total crap, WEEEE!!!!....

If you won't buy a game cause of the name, thats pretty stupid. If Final fantasy 7 was named peepeecacapoopooshire, I still would have loved it.

As for great game sthat are out, vanguard is very fun right now, not sure where the op is getting the crappy gfx from, perhaps a dodgy pc or lack of tuning skills, in any case if you want a game that is fun , finished, and has content coming out the wazoo, try ffxi(if you have a considerable amount of time to play that is, unless you don't mind slow progress).

If your freaking say so, do you think I would have bought my Expedition if it was named a Expac? Or my Ralph Lauren if it was named Ralph Smith?

Do you think people would be running around drinking Cristal and Patron if it was named Clauds and Hector...Do you think rich people would be buying Bentleys if they were named Scions?

A good name goes a long way for alot of people, try this test if you don't believe me.

Say the name Bathtilda to yourself 3 times, now close your eyes and see what image comes to mind. Now say the name Angelica 3 times, close your eyes and see what comes to mind.

Im willing to bet (provided you people don't lie like usual) that 7 times out of 10 Bathtilda made your produce a very ugly woman, while the name Angelica probably was a more favorable looking female.

You people are liars if you say that names don't matter. Saying you would play a game named Peepeecaaacaashire, WTF ever. Tell the truth and shame the devil.

As silly as it sounds, he's 100% right. I've worked both for EA and Ubi Soft, and the name of a game draw just as much time invested on the schedule then how they are actually going to sell the damn thing. So to anybody who's ignoring that fact, you live in a bubble world, because name DOES play a big part in any marketing campain.

What deserves to be done, deserves to be "well" done...

That's the kicker: They "could" actually create a game with "every playstyle" going on and well rewarded. They are just lazy bastards going for the easiest way to make money.

Your post has absolutely no basis in reality, in fact its borderline retarded. The top two most anticipated games are

    WARHAMMER AGE OF RECKONING

AGE OF CONAN : HYBOREAN ADVENTURES

now stop me if I am wrong but both of these have pretty friggin long names, and are both western made.

    Think more please..............

LOL yeah that's real progressive thinking there my friend.

    Status quo all the way.

Makes me sick to think some people actually subscribe to this. Not me, i'l not settle for less, it's my dollar :)

    I didn't even like EQ :

i just find all the greta mmorpgs were ruined and the current format to lack innovation and all boring... We've had the same old crap since EQ and it's time for sumthing new.

  • ZitchZitch Member Posts: 129

I've never been fond of level games either, and EQ took the lime light from UO back in the day... so like cattle, the industry applied that formula primarily.

Still both styles have their place and what we will see is more of a niche market focusing more on playstyles and making better less generic games.

Vanguard is the 3rd highest budget mmo.

    1. Granado Espada, 58 Million

    2. World of Warcraft, 52 Million
