Harry Potter mmorpg?

ThamorisThamoris Member UncommonPosts: 686

I've had something bouncing around in my head. Could a very well done mmorpg based on the Harry Potter be a WoW killer ? I look at the movies and the books and see massive potential to create a Harry Potter mmorpg that would draw millions of subscribers very easily. A mmorpg with game play simular to WoW in complexity with graphics and physics. Think about all the mini games. Guild contests with Quidditch.  Guilds would each eventualy earn Houses. Could have Death Eater raids. I think the possibilities would be endless and a well done Harry Potter casual mmorpg would be very successful. ....Mind ya...I wouldn't play it..lol...just saying.

Ideas, comments, smart remarks?

I think it is very well possible, and it could be very intresting. I believe a Harry potter mmorpg was in the making, but it was canceled.

Totally you could have the whole good vs evil thing. But very limited class capability. You could choose Gryffindor, Hufflepuff,Ravenclaw,or Slytherin.  You wouldn't be Harry, but you could meet his NPC. Yeah, the lunch room or whatever would be where you buy stuff. Hey in Slytherin you'd learn curses, but thats all I can think of, Your life (or just the tutorial) would be in Hogwarts. I can picture it. You could fight Pixies and stuff. That would be pretty cool right  You could have Wizard Duels, I can hear some dude saying"Yeah I'm about to beat you biatch" and then the other guy's K.O'd not very good though, I'd rate it 4 out of 10.

lol here we go again with another thread on how to make a game to be a wow killer.

lmao....harry potter.....lol man mmo scene is getting crazier and crazier every day with these threads.

It could work, though I don't think making the whole game or even a large part of it doing the sorts of stuff Harry Potter does in the book has any hope of working. What do they actually do? They go to boarding school, essentially. The protagonists go on wacky adventures but usually spaced over the course of a year.

Is school conducive to MMO gaming? Mull over that one.

This is one of those catch 22s, in my opinion, like Dune or Star Wars. Everyone wants to be the Fremen, Sardaukar, Bene Gesserit, Jedi, or Sith. Making everyone one of those things is nonsensical in the original context. The only thing you can do to avoid it is to change the context somehow, place the game before/after the original, just say screw it and toss Jedi around, or something along those lines.

In the case of the hypothetical Harry Potter MMO, everyone (at least initially) is going to want to be at Hogwarts. They're probably going to want to see some canonical characters. Even though the lightly touched on adult world of part-magical England would allow the developers much more freedom to muck around with the game storyline and systems.

    Harry Potter MMORPG? Great idea!

I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole, but it might be a good way of reducing numbers of less mature players in the games I want to play.

Now if you could only make it free to play too....

i myself think it would be a great idea, WoW killer no. But u could have like a "house" (guild hall) with ure "house banner" and like u could have GvG battles like quiditch or something like that deatheater raids good idea. P.S. if you like quiditch go to www.xanthians.com/bo i think it is. I think u could be in hogwarts for pre searing to learn the game and leave when ure ready.

Dont think of it has you would take a look at how harry potter was in the movies and such, look at it as if it took off at the end of book 7, evil never ends as it is, there will always be evil, but a charater actully at hogwarts? No, but i think it would be a really fantastic idea, from perhaps learning your own spells and wand movements, learning how to brew complex potions that unlike world of warcraft's crappy alchy syster where you pick and make, they could make it where it was more complex, say the ingrediants could be easy to get, but you would have to brew it perfectly as it says and even then it wont be to the full extent, you can mess around and add your own stuff to incress potental to it, while great epic potions could take up to a month to make! Just by checking up on it every day such as adding stuff maybe putting more heat stiring it a special way, before you set out on adventures or playing wizards chest with a friend in a guild hall or stuff like that, i dont think they would base it on you 'going' to hogwarts, that would just get really boring with not enough space to streach out and explore how you want too, but infact you would be able to visit hogwarts, and the teachers change from time to time, head masters die, others quit just an ever changing enviroment like that. I could see something like that coming around the corner and killing wow with an MMORPG like that easly, i mean no offence i love wow it's my favorite, but im also a huge harry potter fan, and if they created a game with detail like that, that was fun yet complex in its own way of doing stuff, would be really fun for all ages, not just little kids.

It would make a good MMO, but not in the traditional MMORPG form.

It wouldn't be a hack-n-slash deal, it would be something like you design your own unique looking student, get sorted, and meet your house-mates. Then, through a heavy RP setting, you advance through the 'ranks' of the school while you learn spells and develop knacks in certain subjects. Where one guy would be good at transfiguration, another would be good at charms, etc. Then there would be Quidditch matches of course, tourneys and games, etc.

It would be more like an interactive roleplay world than an MMORPG.

EDIT- What WOULD be a great MMO for the kids is a Pokemon MMORPG.

Think about it, the world is literally perfect for an MMO. You travel around with friends, catch rare Pokemon, battle NPC gym members and gain badges, breed your Pokemon, etc.

The 'phat lewt' that hardcore gamers hoard up would be the super-poke balls, evolution potions, etc.

Harry Potter Online was in the pipe for Origin to develop before EA disbanded it.  EA later optioned the license to another developer, only to pull the plug on that project as well.  Admittedly, though, neither got off the ground to begin with.

I'm not entirely sure if Harry Potter Online was going to be a MMORPG or just an online game of some other kind.  I believe EA is still sitting on the rights, but I doubt we're going to see it any time soon.

I've never liked Harry Potter and I think no matter how good a MMO out of it would be it still wouldn't be any huge hit.

EA has the Harry Potter license and they recently bought Mythic, It's only a matter of time imo.

Did they really get the licence? Well that's good - I was gonna pitch it to WB as a product. I hope they don't screw it up but I'm definitely 100% behind it. I love the product, as well as most of the fandom. It's something that lends itself to the mmo realm easily.

I have my own ideas of how you'd progress, what stats and skills you'd have, etc. Though if EA's already got the licence I'll probably just stop writing my proposal then :)

Imagine going from a scared 1st year unable to find your way around the school, to an Auror hunting evil wizards... I think it'd be grand.

We come into the world naked, screaming and covered in blood. And if you play it right, that sort of thing doesn't have to end there.

More than just children like Harry Potter.  I think the fact that the author is richer than the Queen of England is a testiment to the fact.

To the OP:  If it was done well and right, it could be a nice MMO.  Something def different than the same old half assed fantasy crap we've been getting

People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.

I think the potential is there for a pretty cool game.  I dunno how you'd do the school setting exactly.  I guess quests could be like "Go to class.  Do 10x English Paper." Hehe.  Let's see how this shapes up.

Oh pvp could be the different school in that broom game or harry's gang vs draco's game.  I'd name my guy Larry Slaughter.

Maybe an MMO with an Harry Potter type of background. However I doubt that really would appeal to the masses.
