Maybe I missed something, but If all you want to do is solo.. Why are you playing an MMO.. If you talk to anyone who is lvl 40 or higher, its because they have perma groups. Leveling is pretty fast if you are grouped. Solo it takes forever, which it should imo.
Kinda explained alot of already but not all people play MMOs just to group with people. I know it seems the most obvious thing to do, but there are people who want to be in the crowd and not necessarily part of it. I personally like MMOs for the large worlds you can explore, the classes/races, rich lore, player-run economy, chatting to people from other parts of the world while enjoying the game etc. I do like meeting new people too, but not into grouping with people the majority of time. I don't care for the fact soloing takes longer then grouping, in fact you should be able to advance faster grouping, I just want to have fun with my playstyle and still get rewarded decently and not feel like a second-rate citizen as I often do when I used to play EQ and now VG beyond 10-15.
The thing is though if solo was just as rewarding as grouping then noone would group. I know I wouldnt

Which is exactly what he just said. Grouping should be more rewarding. But he wants to feel at least some achievement while soloing. Vanguard is a group-oriented game, that's true. But the soloing options above the 10-15 range are simply too gimped.
Seriously. It's Are'el. This forum doesn't allow apostrophes in usernames.

Actually for some classes, solo is much better xp.
And actually finding a group can often take hours.
But you are right about the perma groups. There are some in our guild that are in the high 20's to low 30's. But those people play with the same people in the same group every single day.
If you don't HAVE one of those uber perma groups, you are kind of screwed.
For a game that is supposed to mostly group based, they sure made VG hard to group in (not even counting all the group bugs).
I would never of touched this game with a 10 ft pole simply because of who the vocal majority on the old vanguard forums were. They were all leet eq1 players looking for their next fix via a long an tedious grind.
And I also saw this first hand in beta 3.
Bottom line is this is not an ACTION BASED MMO. Its a real-time, turned-based, group-paradigm, with manufactured time sinks just like EQ1/2..
I would never of touched this game with a 10 ft pole simply because of who the vocal majority on the old vanguard forums were. They were all leet eq1 players looking for their next fix via a long an tedious grind.
What's so wrong with that? For a while now, MMORPG's have become more and more "solo-friendly", more and more "casual friendly", and there is definately an audience for such games. The thing is, there are plenty of games that fit this formula on the market already. Why, then, do so many people think it's wrong for those who want to spend more time and face greater challenges to want a game that suits their wants as well?
There really hasn't been an MMORPG akin to EQ1 since the days of...well...EQ1. So what's the big deal with people wanting that old-school playstyle back again? Why do the new breed of MMORPG'ers want EVERY game to meet their standards? They have plenty of games to choose from that meet their playstyle. For what reason can they not let those of us who enjoyed and miss EQ1 have just 1 game that brings back some of what we left behind?
I have to say, so far I like Vanguard. I havn't died this much in an MMORPG in years. I personally find it a bit refreshing. I've gotten too used to being able to rush into danger's rectum head first without concern for the concequences. This game makes you think about what your next move is gonna be moreso than most others. Now that may not be everyone's cup of tea, but people seem unable to accept that. These are the ones who want to bash the game, call it crap, and try to tarnish it's reputation rather than just saying, "Eh, not my style," and moving on to something else.
Dont get me wrong, the game's far from perfect. It does have a lot of performance issues and probably could have stood to spend another month or two in beta. I've only witnessed a couple myself thus far, but they say the game is riddled with bugs. This is pretty typical for an MMORPG launch; though I dont know to what extent they're affecting others, they've been merely trivial annoyances for me, nothing game breaking.
All in all, it's not quite as challenging, fun, or immersive as EQ1 was in it's hey day, but it's the closest thing to it available that I know of. It could use a lot of work on the technical end, but the game itself suits me just fine. If you dont like it, thats your opinion, just please let those of us who enjoy it enjoy it, and dont try to hamper the reputation of a company because they've created a product that appeals to a group you dont happen to be a part of.

Theres nothing wrong with it. Whatever floats people's boats, I'm just glad I never wasted 60 bucks on this game..
But please enlighten me as to which game out there based on D&D type fantasy is easier/casual friendly that uses real models not cartoonish ones and is around 2 years old or newer?
What constitutes a hard game? Long xp grinds or the fact you need groups to actually experience content? Or both?
I dont really care that it takes 3 months to get to max level.. What bothers me about all these new games is they force you into groups for 3 months before you max level..
That may not be a problem for some people but for others it can be quite frustrating.
Look at EQ2 right now.. Try and solo grind a defiler to 50 or 60 .. you would be looking at 6 months for a casual player, and most likely 99% of people would quit around level 40.. My question is why make a casual player wait 6 months to experience some high end content that the power gamers got to in 2 months?
I already know someones going to say "why are you playing MMO's then?".
I like the online atmosphere. I like trading with people and bartering with crafters. I like the ocassional pvp. I like competing for named npcs.. Bottom line is, its no ones business why I like online MMO games.. I just do..
I think your assertion that theres lots of casual friendly games out there is BS.. I can't think of one that is using a decent game engine, with a decent theme/setting.
But Sigil got your 60 bucks for Vanguard.. so go play it. I'm not here trying to get them to change Vanguard.. I could care less honestly.. I'm just between Mmo's at the moment since eq2 raiding felt more like a full time job than anything.. and my level 70 defiler is quite use-less on his own.
why would anyone who actually enjoyed playing vanguard, exit the game to come to these forums to talk it up, unless they were bored of it? can someone explain this? if you have played vanguard you are either 1- enjoying a brand new game 2- pissed and hating it, and thus complaining on forums. so what the hell are people who say they like the game doing on forums, unless they are bored of the game? please explain?
I have a good answer. Im at work. So im checking the forums for stupid answers like this and when i get home i play Vanguard.

I've been monitoring your internet porn activity and have informed homeland security. Please clean out your locker and hand in your key pass at the end of your shift.
Im not a big fan of forced grouping. That is why leveling in WoW is way more friendly to the casual player than just about every game out there. if you don't want to group you can still get to 60 (now 70) by doing quests. Forced grouping to level is pointless. Yes I know its a MMO but where does forced grouping fit in to that? Are you going to tell me Im not sharing the gaming world unlesss I am forced to group to level? Grouping should be a choice it shouldnt be rammed down your throat. I shouldnt have only 2 choices either group or grind. The leveling experience doesnt need to be easy just fun and more accommodating to players of all types and preferences.
I dont like the forced grouping myself and think that this game does need some work but i do think its fun and i am willing to give it 6 months to get things going smoothly
In future LISTEN to the posters on mmorpg.com before you dismiss them as Haters. People were warning others about Vanguards issues weeks before it went retail.
If there are mass posters saying "VANGUARD IS BAD" its a good idea to take the benefit of the doubt, and wait to trial it.
Sorry, Vanguard isn't BAD. It's quite fun accually. I never went into this game thinking i could solo it. I knew i needed a good guild to help me get where i wanted to go. Im level 16 at the moment and i've done a few quests so far that aren't kill X amount of mobs.
I really don't listen to most of the posters in this forum anyways. If i want to play something, i play it. Im old enough to make up my own mind what i want to play or don't want to play.
You know what else bothers me about games like this. You spend 2 minutes beating on some npc to get a few copper and nominal xp gain.
Its not the crap reward, but the 2 minute fight to kill the npc that bothers me.. I want fast paced action.. Anyone remember SWG pre cu? running solo missions and spin attacking lairs in 30 seconds.. Damn that was great.. I felt more like a hero in the game. Ya it was easy grinding but the game was more about acquiring loot to be a good pvper.. Bah that old game was awesome.

Well i guess Vanguard isn't for you then. I play WOW for the soloing and playing with my bro's. I play Vanguard for the grouping aspect and needing to be part of a guild. They are two different games and people need to understand that. Im glad they are different.

You forgot VG was going to cater to "all types of gamers." It sure as hell didn't, at least not right now.

The market didn't need another ever quest clone either...

If they want an mmorpg sized game to play solo, go pick up oblivion, gothic 3, etc...
Actually a lot of people solo because they sometimes don't have the time but still want the option to group when the do. But I think one of the main reasons people solo is because they like the idea that in the background there are others participating in the game just like them. And while they are playing they can chat. You don't have to group to be social in a MMO.
I never understood why people like forced grouping. I mean the devs are asking complete strangers (not always but a lot of the times) to work together. I didn't like group projects with strangers in college and I can't fathom why this concept is included in a game for enjoyment. Grouping should feel natural and should be a choice. If grouping is so great (and I admit, it is a lot of fun), why do people tend to solo if given the choice?
In EQ I did pick up groups because I didn't know better. At least until I got into the 40s, at which point, getting a group for my druid was just about impossible, so I just gave up, and took up quad kiting to glory.
When I first started WoW, I did pugs on my priest till I hit 60, then it was primarily guild only stuff. Either MC/Ony or UBRS, Strat, etc. Then I got bored and left the game for about 6 months. Came back and started from scratch on the Horde side as a Warlock. Due to the sheer amount of completely assbackwards mouthbreathers I had to deal with as a Priest the first time through, I refused to do pugs. It was either a guild only group, or solo.
In VG, it's hard to do a guild group since everyone is spread out not only across three continents, but a fairly wide range of levels as well. I tried doing some pugs for dungeons around lvl 14/15, and truth be told, I found it fairly disinteresting. Perhaps it was the dungeon itself that was lacking(Khegors End), the people I grouped with were competent enough, but it just wasn't any fun. Nevermind that there was like 1 nonquest loot drop the entire time, and I only made a handfull of copper, much of which went towards repairing after. Compared to my time spent soloing, where I don't have to fight with some know-it-all over where I want to go, or what I want to do. And I get better loot and money, so far. And frankly, I haven't seen that great of a difference in xp gain, once you remove the time I spend not actively xp, just wandering about sightseeing.
This might well change after 20, or 30. And it could go either way. Perhaps the dungeons will be more interesting. Or perhaps I'll end up forced to group or go nowhere.
As far as the whole grind goes, I've said it before, and I'll say it again. There were levels in WoW where the grind became noticable for me. So far in VG, I haven't felt as if I were grinding. Might just be the new MMO smell, or it might be that the pve content is, for me, fun enough that the grind isn't noticable, yet. Though, given the fact that the current highest level player is level 47 as of yesterday, and near as I can tell from the "Achieved Level X" blogs, he's done it totally solo, the grind can't be that bad, seeing as the game is only a bit over 2 weeks old.
I have to agree with the original posters point of view I have been playing VGSOH from beta and bought the game via digital download. So far the game is a huge let down for me, i like the game but it is still a let down.
Firstly even on my rig the perfomance is shoddy at times and shoddy i mean that the perfomance is not stable you get lag spikes but thats due to the high latency (not my fault my connection is spot on) massive drops in fps and again thats due to a combination of poor optimisation of the engine and bad drivers on the part of Nvidia. I don't want to see posts such as I play on high settings and I get great performance etc reason being I play at 1920 x 1200 thats my optimum resolution not 1024x768 or 1280x1024, i have 1000 pounds worth of GFX cards so for that money they game should give me very good performance at least 80% of the time. If I can play games such as FEAR and Oblivion maxed out at that resolution and get amazing performance (those games are very demanding) I don't see why I can't get at least adequate performance with VGSOH.
The game for me lacks any atmosphere and it is hard trying to find a group and I've grouped with a lot of people but many of them are just not good at group play and you often end up dead due to the mobs agroing them and then having to run half a mile in game to lose the agro (if you ever lose it) on the way picking up more mobs which agro you once they are dead. The dungeons are repetitive and uninspired same thing over and over again. The quests are just
I am a crafter and the crafting system is dull, it keeps you interested at first but is extremely repetitive after crafting for say 10 levels. There is something missing and i'm sorry it just does not deliver what it promised. I can't see my self crafting for 6 months and keeping any sanity with this system unless they improve it drastically.
I hear people going the game is supposed to be this hard blah blah, i'm sorry you know nothing all these problems are bad design decisions, bugs and things that were overlooked. You want the game to appeal to other hardcore MMO gamers simple answer is improve the game and make it user friendly. By that I don't mean make the game easy or linear like WoW i mean add finishing touches such as sign posts in villages or a detailed map which tells you exactly where you are in towns and cities so it makes the job easier when you are trying to search for NPC's or a particular broker etc. This doesn't make the game easier it enhances it and adds polish.
I will probably give the game another month to improve if it doesn't then time to try the next big thing.

The "grind" or whatever you like to call it, is not what's killing the game for me. But the "RE-Grind" does.
Due to bugs, crashes, corpse runs etc. which leads to that I get killed over and over again, and gain more and more xp debt, when it's actually not even my own fault - is making me wanna quit. Regrinding lost xp is a killer!
You just can't implement corpse runs and xp debt at a stage where the game is infested with bugs and crashes!!
I'm not an overall hater. This is my one and only issue with the game, and I hate to say that I'm not sure if I can take anymore of this.......
So the OP is saying that this game has a harder levelling curve than most MMO's out there?
Good. About time we got some challenge.
In fact, the game that was most rewarding for me was Lineage 2 in its early stages. So Vanguard isnt that harsh at all, Actualy they dumped down the penalties and exp needed to gain levels.

Some people like Britney Spears, some people like Bethoven. What ever you feel gives meaning to your life, go for it.
Not that id recommend Spears.
Cheers though
