Good first time MMORPG?

  Hey all,

I posted in another forum that I was looking for a new game for a 30 something to try, and I wanted to play a MMORPG.  Up till now my online experience has been Diablo 2 and Guild Wars.  I was looking for something more mature (i.e. non WOW) and they steered me to this game.  Do you think this would be a good introduction to the MMOROPG world?

I looked at the official website and it looks like the game will have a very dark feel to it (which I like).

Thanks, now I just have to wait for it to come out.

That pretty heavily depends on your gaming preferences.

For example, one of the immediate things that make or break a game in terms of personal preference is the design of the interface, particularly in combat. AoC is using a real time directional combat system. Guild Wars, and most other MMORPGs, including WOW, use an autoattack and skill hotbar system.

Think of Diablo's combat system, where you must be concerned with precisely which of the bastards ranged around you to attack and when, and what attack you use. Its essentially a clickfest, but a significant amount of strategy is involved, particularly with the mage classes. Here, not only are you concerned with the direction of attack, but A.) which of the six angles would be most effective for your next blow and B.) what would be the most effective attack to follow the last blow with. And if you're smart, you're already thinking about the third and fourth blows already.

As I'm sure you can imagine, it will probably be quite intensive. Myself and other gamers are glad to see it, a lot of people are fed up with games where you can either just go to sleep while your character does all the work, or only have to stay up so you can spam the potion button over and over. But that does not in any way shape or form means it will appeal to everyone.

In comparison to Guild Wars, primary differences will include: almost no instancing as opposed to everything instanced, significantly more content storyline and otherwise, interactive environment (everything you see can be surmounted, no invisible path walls), more freedom in character advancement. Oh, and a monthly fee unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you look at it.

As to the question of Maturity, this will be an M rated game, made for adults. This means that the setting, the level of violence and other factors will reflect that, so in terms of what you see, yes this will be a mature game. However, when it comes to the community, to be perfectly honest, that rating means absolutely squat in the end. I personally believe that the only way that the community in this game will become and remain a mature one, is by people setting a standard and sticking to it. In Funcom's last MMORPG, Anarchy Online, the community remained highly mature on the whole in spite of a significant amount of players suddenly coming in through the free offer. How was it done? By people setting a standard of conversation, constantly being there to help newer players, not resorting to 1337 speech or lame Chuck Norris jokes (this is not to say niether of them ever occurs)

Thanks for the info. I'll go check out the main site.  I must say I am amazed at how organized people are (going to forums, creating web pages) all for a game that doesn't come out until the end of the year.  Do you think there will be players in the thrities in this game?

My brief background: my favorite games of the past six years or so have been BG2, D2, Rome.  Again, I loved the dark feel of D2.  Guild wars was ok, but it just didn't do asnythign to really grab me.  And the equiment drops in Guild Wars  were terrible I thought.  I think you are suppsoed to focus on crafting ro something, i just didnt have the patientce.

Now what to play until AOC comes out?  Anyone tried Oblivion?

I've gone back to some fps games with some friends until it comes out. Though, fps games are starting to get stale also. I've been gaming with the same bunch for about ten years now, and we used to have some very fun games to bs around on, but now there doesn't seem to be anything to keep us all together. Hopefully I can get a decent amount of them on AoC like I did for SWG, but it will be difficult to round them all up.

I'm nearing 30, and have tried quite a few games from different genres, also being stuck as to what will suit me. Seems to be every game has one or two new things that are interesting, but they don't tie the whole game together for the whole experience. Even AoC still needs a couple of things for me but it's my best bet so far. I'm not sure if its a good first try for the mmorpg world, as comparable to others, but that might be the best thing about it at this point.

Lol, my guild's average age is about 30, and every last one of us is over 17 at least. Our roster includes about 125 members right now.

I think this will be the perfect game for you.  The setting for Conan is somewhat similar too D2 in that it is dark fantasy as opposed to high fantasy(90% of fantasy games).  There are no elves or dwarves.  The world is filled with demons and Lovecraft inspired monsters.  It's going to be more action based than traditional eq'esque mmo's so you won't be grinding bear asses for 10 hours.

I honestly dont think this would be the greatest choice for starter mmo. Seems too hardcore for that. But therre are plenty of 7-10-14 trials out there for you to gets your feet wet with before this game launches. You can check the mmo trial section of fileplanet or check the stickies on the general page of this site.
