For the new player on a budget: Which Guild Wars Should You Buy? Slow site so you might need to wait a minute or two before thread shows/loads.

Factions added (2) new classes that your characters can only play IF you own Factions.  Same goes for Nightfall & it's (2) new classes.  The original Guild Wars had (6) classes possible if I remember correctly.  Also, I believe you will only be able to travel through areas of which you bought the expansion of.  If you only have original Guild Wars then only the original areas.  If you only have Factions then only Factions' areas, & same for Nightfall.  I've read that the Nightfall Heroes are superior to Henchies of the original Guild Wars & Factions so that might be something to consider too.  Or purchase all (3) & be able to play any class combination & travel anywhere.  Good luck to you, it's a pretty fun game which I plan on playing again a bit soon.

The differences are there thats for sure.  Prophecies and Factions are more team oriented, while Nightfall has customizable henchmen that level up with you, making solo questing an option in a lot of missions. The first 2 have henchmen, but the AI on them sucked and they had a specific skill set. Meaning they were pretty worthless most of the time. Nightfall finally gives you pretty much full custom capabilities for their new hechmen. And thats PvE, PvP takes place on a group of servers that you can access from any of the 3 games. Hope this helps.

What I would do is buy all three of them.  That way you start out with a character in prophecies like a Warrior/Monk and go through Prophecies then go to Factions areas like Cantha.  Then go from Cantha and the Factions areas to the Nightfall areas so that way you know how the story came to past and be able to understand it more.  Many of my friends baught Factions then baught Nightfall and they hated it because they got too confused.  I told them to go out and buy Prophecies so that way they know how it all started so they couln't be so confused.
