question about leveling

ok so i have been playing the trial version for a few days and over the last few days i have played about 8 hours but have yet to reach second level. im almost there but not quite my question is in the retail version does it take this long to level? otherwise i kinda like the game and may purchase it but i dont like not being able to just randomly explore stuff (at least as far as I can tell thus far)

Usually the exact opposite will be posted.   Leveling goes pretty fast in DDO compared to alot of other MMORPG's.   If you are running the very early solo quests some of those can have very small xp.   One thing that will definitely speed up your leveling is grouping up with other players.   You will be able to tackle much larger quests that give much higher experience.   But the important thing is to play at the pace that your comfortable with.

Or just pretend the ranks are levels, so you get an Action Point every level, and more hit points/abilities every 5 levels
