Perfect World seems to be visually pleasing to me. Everything from environment to gear. Too bad we cant play it.

I guess I like the look of LoTR online the best overall ( except for some little annoyances like the way dwarfs run).

I quite like the EverQuest II art and the amount of detail the designers put into the world. It definately has it's drawbacks though, as if you are running the game lower than 'Balanced' the main ground texture is essentially stretched as far as the eye can see. A good example of this is in Antonica, if you have a decent rig you can see grass and its swaying, but if you are below Balanced - it's just green everywhere.

Other than that, the cities are beautifully  made and the dungeons feel real. Blackburrow in Antonica is one of my favorites, as it's small but incredibly well made. I won't go into anymore detail, in case I spoil it for anyone else - but it's great!

Granado Espada for sure. I really love the renaissance feel of it. It reminds me of FF9 and a little of FF12.

Im gonna go out on a limb and say EvE.

Thanks to all the poeple bashing it lately I decided to take a second look and with my new rig.... phew.... its just breathtaking sometimes. As someone who really get a chill up my spine watching movies like 2001 and Bladerunner Id have to say its the best grafix in an MMO Ive ever seen.

Second would go to EQ2 easily. There were times in EQ2 that I just stood and stared at scenes, if they got one thing right in that game it was the visuals.

Bronze to Vanguard.... but only on Max detail as someone else said. Considering almost no one can run it on max, its kind of out there to give it a prize.... but there ya go...

Everquest 1 + ruins of kunark and  scars of velious expansions.

Very good use of texture work, detail, and theme (especialy in ruins of kunark)

It's dated now, but still is the most visualy pleasing and impressive MMO for me.

Most visually pleasing... Vanguard on high settings, if you can get it to run.

Ok then, back to topic. Well definitely EQ2 in regards to visual effects and body physics alone. Cloth flowing physically correct around your char while moving, fighting and so on? Great stuff if your rig can handle it and this just as example for what the engine is able to deliver. Also I do like the general artistic style so I'd say it's best for my taste least.

There are 3 types of visually stunning

1: The one where you have to spent $3000.00 on a new PC to play - ie : Vanguard

2: The one that runs well on your average PC - ie : LOTRO

3: The one that has artistic appeal - ie: WOW

Me I prefer number 3 , I like to feel a part of the world one where you feel you are in the game  that looks like it was made that way for a reason , WOW sure did that . I felt like I was in the Warcraft universe  but in 3d & not 2d of Throne of Chaos ..

From what I've seen, Age of Conan beats Vanguard hands down on scenery. The visual appeal of the landscape is simply amazing. Of course, the two game's character looks are a little closer to par for now.

The harbor of Tortage, this screenshot incidently was taken early on in the Beta, and is shown without the benifit of the enhancing effects of the Direct X10 system, as such, its potential upon launch will be even higher.

while wurmonline's graphics aren't the best I enjoying seeing 5-6 KM away.

as for pure graphic whoring beauty I go with FP shooters because MMO's are always a couple years behind.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

I'd have to say that currently released, EVE Online has the market down, followed by Vanguard: Saga of Heroes and Everquest 2. Up and coming, Age of Conan, Huxley and a couple of others look real nice. I shudder to think what's coming though.

Not to mention you will need a machine twice as expensive as what you would need to run vanguard to get AoC to look that good without it being 1-3 fps.

I think he meant "stunning" in a good way.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

  • My guess is that AoC run under DirectX 10 will be quite nice.  DirectX 10 has some real changes in lighting stuff as can be seen in some article I saw somewhere where they compared to two.  Assuming they have the artists whihc it looks like they do.

But for my tastes the games that made say man I could just kinda sit here and look at this:

-Guild Wars.  Certain parts of it just look plain cool.  The graphics are good but nothing amazing but some zones just look so nice.  Parts of the Realm of Torment where you see the other towns floating in nothingness.  And for some reason Mehtani Keys I could just sit there and look at the fish swim while I drink a beer.

-Eve Online.  Again its not really super awesome graphics itself, but just looking at some of the space clouds and the sheer scope of somethings is pretty cool.  In a sense its more that it is really is a quite decent space sim more than anything else.  It can really make you feel small.  Even though its not hard to realize that the various effects are "generated" or perhaps copied or whatever, even then its still pretty wild.  That is sort of the elegant beuty of the idea of Eve.  Its "content" is not some map some artist drew.  To some degree that gets impressed on you because the effects you are seeing lightyears away.  In the end they really are not nearly as impressive artistically as some the of the WoW artists, but the nature of the whole thing impresses itself upon you anyway.  Perhaps that is a superior form of art, but if it is then that is from the concept of the game itself not because of whoever made that system.  It is in some sense awesome because space is awesome and they let that come out.  Whereas WoW zones looks nice because someone set out to make them look nice and flow nice and put a happy little tree over here.

-CoX.  Not really graphics, not really even stunning.  Its just really cool to fly/teleport up onto a sky scraper and look down on all you survey.  Its just sort of satisfying.

I don't like EQ2 art and some of their zones are made just wrong.  It has some nice stuff but never gave me that wow that is cool feeling.  WoW was the same, except that they have what I consider good artists, but it is to cartoony to be "stunning".  I haven't played Vanguard and do not intend to, but to my eye its art is similar to EQ2 and leaves me distant no matter how the graphics are.  I do like that they have a nice view distance, but that isn't good enough.

High settings, my ass.  It's just a lie to get everyone to think there's good graphics hidden in there somewhere, but the only thing stunning about Vanguard's graphics is the system requirements.  Screenshot after screenshot, video after video, only proving that Vanguard's got the worst graphics I've seen from a big-budget title in years.

Technically, AoC and Vanguard have some amazing looking environments.   Animation spoils it though.  Realistic looking characters that move unrealistically doesn't make the whole package flow.   Some of the designs could be copied and pasted from 100 different fantasy games.  Theres nothing truly unique looking about them.

From an artistic perspective WOW easily wins hands down for me, with GW as a close second.   The low polygon counts mean nothing since you never play with the camera zoomed all the way in to notice.   Its how everything works together.  Blizzard understands art and design better than most.   They stick to a consistent vision.

I'd say Eve looks amazing if it wasn't for the fact that every environment is just wallpaper.  You can't touch, interact  or fly through any of it.  Theres just no depth.  The repetitious environments don't help either.  After you've seen one system, you've seen them all.   The presentation is great, but the wonder wears thin quick, since theres never anything new to see.

AoC probably looks the best of games if you include games not in beta.  However, Granado Espada takes the cake until AoC comes in.  Its textures are well done and the world is incredibly well modeled.  American developers should take notes on the graphics cause the ones in GE are simply the best done right now.
