Each game is stand alone, so you can pick up any of the three alone and play.

For PvP, all the games work in the same area, so population isn't a consideration. 100% of the PvP community plays together.

For PvE population, it's almost always highest in the latest chapter. In this case, it is Nightfall. However, I strongly recommend choosing the first one instead (titled simply Guild Wars on the box). That one is best suited for all types of play, is the cheapest of the 3 if you shop around a little, and is the single most recommended for PvP skills. If you still like the game after giving that one a try, I would say you should complete that game before you pick up a second one, as likely chapter 4 will be released by then.

does the latest one have new classes/races, and doesnt it have better graphics?

Both Factions and Nightfall have additional classes, yes. But, those classes can only be started in their chapters (Assassins and Ritualists in Factions, Dirvishes and Paragons in Nightfall).

As for graphics, that's rather moot now. Even Prophecies is DirectX 9.0c, and they're still making graphical tweaks to that game. No, the whole game is still very graphically impressive.

kk think I get it, each game guildwars, factions, nightfall they can all play the guildwars classes+ the classes from their game..?

    Yep.

On the up side, if you have multiple chapters you can take a quest to take a character started in one game to another game. Say, start a Ranger in Guild Wars, then purchase Nightfall and you can move your Ranger over to the Nightfall area. All it takes is a quest.

To break it down a little further:

All games have the "core" classes of Warrior, Ranger, Elementalist, Necromancer, Mesmer, and Monk.

Factions allows you to create the Assassin and Ritualist.

Nightfall allows you to create the Dirvish and Paragon.

All three games have their own unique story and quests. They also each have their own distinct and unique lands and enemies. Each game has an assortment of skills for all of the classes they support, and a small handful are considered "core" and are available in each game (note that this only applies to the core classes).
