I'd have to personally say that in my experience, the graphics in Vanguard simply blow away LOTRO. I haven't played through the entirety of either game mind you, but newbie areas are your first impression to a game, and LOTRO has left me with a bad impression of the game. (In addition to the fact that I don't like how similar it is to DDO).
Because you are in the noob instance for the elves and dwarves which is completely uninspired. I'm not impressed with the Dwarven starting point (which is essentially the noob instance except that elves then go to Celendom which is very nice.
Part of what makes the graphics in this game is the use of color and how light plays off of surfaces. The blandness of the Dwarf (or dwarf/elf starting instance) makes it hard to really appreciate anything the world offers.
Believe me, I wasn't impressed until I left the noob instance.
Fair enough Sovrath, I'll try to hold judgement until I see the other areas. However, I wish someone would tell turbine that a first impression is important. If your first impression with LOTRO is these bland and uninspired newbie areas, how are you supposed to be motivated to see the rest of the game (If you're not that big of a lotr fan)?
I 100% agree!

You dont have to have to upgrade your computer to enjoy the game or the graphics. Notice the complete lack of performace help posts here unlike other game forums on this site.
This ones a winner. Whether anyone on this forum agrees or not.
See you in the dream.. The Fires from heaven, now as cold as ice. A rapid ascension tolls a heavy price.
I think the real trick to this game (any game, really) is finding a class that you like. Even with the truly beautiful world that Turbine has created, if you don't find the game fun, you don't find the game fun. I didn't find the game to be fun...until I started up a Burglar on a whim. The Burglar is the only class I have leveled up past 10, and though I'm told that Minstrels become very entertaining (cough) after about level 15 or so, I have found in the Burglar the Thief/Rogue class I have often desired. *knocks on wood, fearing the nerf bat"
A friend of mine stated that "Turbine built the game around the world, and then tossed in classes as an after thought." The world really does feel alive (especially after you get into, and then out of the Bree area), but they do have some things to work on. From what I have experienced so far in beta, they are trying to work on the "weak links." They don't seem to be doing that bad of a job fixing these problems either...I just wish they would fix the bloody "random bear growl" that makes me jump out of my chair.
One last comment before I log for the night. Those of you who believe that this game is just WoW with a LOTR skin stretched across it's bones are really quite mistaken. I thought this at first as well...and though it has borrowed some aspects from WoW (as WoW did from others), it really is it's own game.
My feedback thus far is that graphics are ok. I've played enough MMO's to see fully what's out there. On a side note, parts of their graphics are amazing such as their water and certain character movement and animations. The gameplay is fast and levels do come quickly though I find it's mostly from questing, not from hunting.

It's not all newbie area first-impressions, just the elf/dwarf one. For some reason, it didn't seem as bad for the dwarves, to me. I wouldn't say it's uninspired, but it is lacking somehow. Maybe starting characters in a snow-covered zone's a bad idea, or maybe it just needs more blizzard effects or something, I dunno. The elven ruins didn't exactly impress me, either.
Start as a hobbit or human, and the game looks A LOT better, right off.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
I must say i'm quite impressed with the LOTRO gameplay/graphics, imo they fit the game very well, like EQ2 and WoW are made to be.
Vanguard looks nice also but has to many flaws where i haven't noticed much in LOTRO. Despite that LOTRO is looking pretty good as much as your system lets it look (and still keep it playable) i must say impressive, well long story short the LOTRO graphics were as i hoped they would be but that's just my oppinion. I do admit i expected the world to look 'bigger' but who wants to walk for hours to reach some point?
Only thing in LOTRO i don't like is the way they walk steip hills, just looks like i dunno stupid :P I will surely play LOTRO, it's pretty much ready to be released, i just hope they fix the 'door bug' (relog to see doors or let someone else open them) and some of the fellowship quests (after failing still seeing the npc in party but unable to quit party - relog)
Something else to keep in mind when playing Lotro is that it isn't geared towards the grinders. If you try to simply level off of killing mobs, you will quickly learn to hate the game. You have to quest, and you actually have to pay attention to what the quest dialog says. The only time I have to grind is when I'm collecting pelts for tailoring and foresting...and then there are some spots out there that seemed specifically designed for this.

With a game like LotRO , graphics are an added extra, to a rich , compelling story that we all love and cheerish.
who me ?

First i set the settings to low
And here at the same place with the settings at high
Also remember, turbine is still working on DX10 graphics
