What combat is like?

Haven't been following the game to closely but thinking about pre-ordering just in case due to the $10 a month fee after the free month. Can't beat that considering the prices for other MMORPGs. Anyway do we know yet (has the NDA been lifted?) what combat is like?



Can anyone compare it to any other released game?



I think I could get an idea of how controls and gameplay will feel in comparison. Have played the following so far. SWG (Pre-NGE and post), DDO, EQ1, EQ2, Asheron's Call 1, Dark Age of Camelot, Anarchy Online, City of Heroes/Villains, FFXI, Ultima Online, World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, Lineage 2.



I've played a few others but these are the controls I remember the most. Especially Lineage 2, SWG (post-NGE), Asheron's Call 1, City of Heroes/Villains, and Everquest 2 as they were the last few games I've played (currently playing COH and SWG now (on free month with copy I won and trial version respectively)).

The mechanics of combat and the UI is similar to WoW but, better in my opinion. You get several “special moves” as you level that do premium damage, speed your attacks up, etc all requiring focus. This focus is depleted with each special move, but regenerates fast.

 

The combat system requires more player involvement and strategy in how and when to use the special moves. 

 

All around, the combat system is good and getting better.

 

I have been in beta for several months and find the changes made by Turbine to the entire game a significant improvement. This game is farther along than AC2 was in it’s open beta. And, more importantly, Turbine will manage the game after release. When Microsoft took over AC2 management after release the demise of that game was secured.

 

Another nice point, in my opinion, is that LoTRO is nothing like WoW in content, but the UI and game controls are similar allowing a much faster learning curve.

Great to hear. Control can usually make or break a game I feel. That was a problem I had with AC2 in terms of control of the character. However World of Warcraft was nicely done I feel. Seemed like a natural progression of controls found in EQ1 and other games. Same for controls in CoH.



Is movement controlled by WASD keys or something different?

Thought it would be for good, but if it goes back to the $15 a month fee then pre-ordering might not be worth it after all. A shame really. That appears to be a serious deal breaker. Can't believe I missed it before. Sorry about making this thread then.

what a heck of a deal breaker,if you cancel and resub they will charge the same as every other top shelf game out there. Or charge you the same price as if  you do not preorder, those sneaky curs ! That is why I am going with the  lifetime, 200 bucks is only than 13 months of WoW, or EQII, or only 8 months of SOEs station pass where I get 1 decent (EQII) and a half dozen half ass games( SWG,  The Matrix ,Vanguard, Planetside) for 25 bucks a month. I can see me playing LoTRO with all it's expansions for several years down the road now.
