I thought we went thru all this bright neon color thing when you guys changed the site to the current layout... and I thought everyone screamed about it ... and what's up now? You are trying to sneak it back in?
In forum list of threads, I have these green neon flashlights beaming me in the face! argh! I surrender! mercy! please!
Remember, many people have BRIGHT 1000:1 contrast monitors ( like me).... when you lay these colors out, why not develop for the latest technology, instead of some old dim CRT ???
OR better yet, just give me a feature to change the highlight color from a NEON GREEN to something that doesn't make my eyes bleed.... please....

Of course I understand u are doing a site for thousands of people... the web designers biggest constraint. The only way to really get yourself some flexibility, is to give some to the users. Give users some color-scheme choices, or maybe let them tweak a color here and there... then you will have more room to do what you want.
( The only other part that might still be a little bright is when you look at a list of posts, and see the big squares with the numbers on them for the page navigation. I suppose it's bearable now.... although I don't really like it that much )

The most recent change gets a thumbs up from me. It's amazing how such a subtle change can make the visuals feel a little more fresh. You can almost smell the lemon lime on this one.
I have a dual SyncMaster 740n setup, so I can only judge from a 600:1 contrast ratio, from which the green looks fine. How much different is it than a 900:1 or a 1000:1? 'Cause i'm imagining the green highlights might be projecting onto the wall behind you. LOL
Edit: and I'm liking the new screenshot viewer! Death to popups!
EDIT: and just to be clear... sky toned it down pretty quick after post, so it's bearable now....

it seems fine to me, the brightness is fine and not over powering
