Movies: War Of The Worlds, or, Independence Day

See now.. I like both of these movies, I thought they were both amazing. Clearly "War Of The Worlds" is MUCH more graphically amazing, anyone could tell that. But I liked how the movie "Independence Day" was played out.

Any thoughts?

I'd have to go with Independence Day. It had a much more "inspired" quality to it.

War of the Worlds, IMHO, was very dark in comparison to ID4. ID4 was almost campy in the way it was delivered. A very good movie though.

I liked both of them but for different reasons. War of the Worlds actually did have a fear factor to it where as ID4 was more a disaster film.

Of course War of the Worlds was a remake of a classic sci fi movie and that in turn was from a radio show done by Orsan Welles that actually did scare alot of people and made them believe the earth was under attack.

It was H.G. Wells, sorry I am a Wells addict. The ending of War of the Worlds was its weak point, but such a plot flaw can't be blamed on Wells because the story is so old.

I dunno, I think both movies are absolutely amazing in my opinion, so that's why I own them both.

I've not seen this movie...I'll make a point to do so soon. The old version I thought was a major disappointment. It'd be nice if someone made something closer to the book. I was a big fan of the Jeff Wayne musical version when I was younger.

The ending just seemed implausible to me in the book. I agree it was a clever twist, but if they are advanced enough to take Earth over, they probably have a good understanding of micro organisms.

But not necessarily Earth's micro organisms. If they had only observed from afar, how would they get the opportunity?

Did you ever see the Mel Gibson film, "Signs" - Now that really was ridiculous. Aliens who get killed by water going to a planet that is mostly water. In the movie, they land all over the planet, and yet it was Mel Gibson who discovered the water thing. If they landed in the UK, we have so much rain, their game would be up immediately!

You're trying to tell me Sixth Sense was Shamalyan's only good movie? Oh dear....

Signs always pissed me off for that exact flaw, and don't even get me started about Lady in the Water.

I liked lady in the water.

though war of the worlds just seemed like a commercial exploit of the book to me. wasn't a bad movie though.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

ID4 was like two different movies jammed together at the middle.  The first half is a slow-building, tension-raising, fear-for-your-life disaster drama.  It was very well done.  The second half quickly degenerates into jokey rollercoaster of terrible one-liners and melodramatic drivel.  WotW maintains an even feel throughout, and I gain a little more respect for it each time I've seen it (though the ending is still a giant mis-step for me).  WotW is a better movie I think, but ID4 is more entertaining.  Don't ask me to explain that seeming dichotomy, its just the way I feel.

War of the worlds looked good but Tom's stupid retarted kids and the fact these aliens were morons when it came to studying our microbial bacteria made for a broken story imo. Independance day was my favorite and even though I doubt a human computer could interface with an advanced alien cpu and deliver a virus but I still found it some what believable because they included the Roswell crash which gave them insight into their tech. IMO the aliens in Wotw looked like rip off's from ID4, their faces were identical and their tri-pod attack vehicles were nothing compared to the City size saucers in ID4. I wonder who would win if those 2 aliens went to war lol? I would bet on the crazy ID4 aliens they seem to have better tech and do a little more research, like how stupid do you have to be to travel light years to conquer a planet only to be killed by its microbial life which you failed to prepare for?

Independance Day was pretty cool. How many other movies do you know of where the cable guy saves the world? Kind of makes up for not being able to show up at your place and install your cable on time, don't it?

I disagree here, Independance Day was realy enjoyable, but I might be biased because it was probably the best movie atmosphere I have ever been in when I saw it.  Mann's Chinese Theatre on openning night, packed house great trailers....I believe it was the first time they had shown Star Wars Episode I and a StarTrek, and every time a new day appeared on the screen, the crowd absolutely roared.  I get chills just typing it.

Btw ...Close Encounters of the Third Kind FTW.

I forgot about Close Encounters of the Third Kind! Stupid me!

    Wait... MARS ATTACKS!!! W00T!!!!

    Independence Day was horrible.

Oh, aliens with big heads, black eyes and a screeching voice... They're telepatic too? And they want to destroy mankind? Ah, and of course they're like some kind of locust species with no individual spirit... Yea, and they use Windows... And one scientist saw the danger, tried to warn us and we ignored him... And the human victory is on the 4th of July? The president can fly a jet plane?Cool. I bet they start with killing all the monuments... because we all know those are our most important buildings...

Ah, and a spaceship that's 2000 miles in diamter is destroyed with a single H-bomb... Ok...

    Cliches ftw...

Well, if we get to vote on our favorite scifi movie, then 2001: A Space Odyssey clearly wins.

Your forgetting that the book was writtain before we understood microorganisms and found out how to effectivly deal with them.

If you watch the film again you will hear a rumour that the chinese had found a way to fight them too. But yea i kind of agree the whole premmise was pretty lame.

    Independence Day.

War of the Worlds bored me a little. It tired to do the whole disaster movie thing, and add terror. Didn't work for me, and I got tired of the little girl screaming (Don't get me wrong, I'd do the same, but I didn't pay to watch her scream her lungs out).

Independence Day was a good action/disaster movie, cliches and all.

    Independence Day by a landslide.

I wasn't all that impressed with War of the Worlds and much prefer the original 1953 movie any day.  Never seen the other 2005 movie but i reckon even that would be better then the Tom Cruise one.  And did you know there was also a 1988 series too (lasted all of two seasons).

Speaking of recent movies based on HG Wells books, they sure did butcher the story in The Time Machine.
