Thinking of starting to play vangaurd... Played FFXI for about 3 years and then went to WoW for about a year. I recently quit playing wow and have been splitting my time between EVE and WWII Online, just wondering if Vangaurd is worth the hype?
I know its early but what are the group aspects like? Whats the grind like(FFXI or WoWish?), Is there any talk about GOOD end game? I like a challenege, not WoW EZ mode.
Thanks,

If you've got an older rig, check out some thread tweaks for getting the best performance, you might pick up as much as 60% more fps, I know I did, but that was during beta, I'm not sure how untweaked compares now for my particular system. I'd far rather play than go test that!
this thread will sefl-destruct in 5.. 4.. 3.. 2.. 1..
I started to play Vanguard because it looked fun and interesting to me. You are not going to have any idea reading these forums they are all over the place with play and don't play comments. Bottom line, if it looks fun to you give it a try.
Im finding Vanguard fun so far. I found a good guild and we a working toward our guild hall and housing. It will take awhile but i can't wait until we get there. There are solo quests and a nice helping of group quest too. They just upped the experence for quests last patch, Alittle to much i think, but they said they will tweak it over the next few patches.
I think combat is more difficult in this game. Mobs can drop you quick if you don't pay attention.

Happy! Happy! Joy! Joy!
You see these threads pop up almost everyday where someone wants to know if they should try Vanguard. The real answer is only you will know if you like it and the only way that is going to happen is if you give it a try.
You can read every single post on these forums, good and bad, but in the end it still doesnt matter what others think. I love the graphics, but maybe you will find them not to your liking. I like the game play as it's not too slow to level and it's not super faster either, but maybe you will think it is too slow or too fast. If your just wanting other people to randomly tell you what to do on this subject your going to find yourself out of luck as some will say it's bad and same will say it's good.
Bottom line is if spending $50.00 is going to set your budget into a downward spiral to poverty then you should wait as with any game there is always the chance you might not like it, but on the brighter side thats all you would loose. If you like it then great it's going to be money well spent - if not then it's going to be sitting on game shelf along with the other games you never play.
If you can put up with few bugs and some crashes, then you ll enjoy Vanguard (after last patch the crashes are not as bad as before, once every 4 hours is pretty much acceptable).

^^No its not, not for a retail game, for beta yes, but not for retail.
The game got poor reviews ~70%, alot of what is said to be in VG is not currently in there (for example the ocean is empty), it will thrash even the highest spec system for minimal visual enjoyment (IMHO), the population is low and due to the size of the world (big is not better) it will never feel alive unless you like going 30mins without seeing a soul and exploring empty zones made with a terrain generator program, only about 20% of the game has been worked on to a good degree and is worth visiting.
But that said a handful like it and have no problem paying to play a game that even the Dev say it incomplete and still in a Beta phase.
f you can get a trial key give it a go.
I will try to list the games pluses and minuses according to me:
Plus:
- Huge world, that is open. No zones or artifical walls. Everything you see you can explore (but some places might take a flying mount to reach).
- Involving and fun combat, combat is really fun be it solo or group. I find it much more involving than WoW combat (I played WoW for 2 years).
- Good crafting system that is a lot more complicated then the poor WoW system, but it is not as good as crafting in EQ2 or even Horizons (ok that was the only plus Horizons had...)
- Diplomacy, a good amount of lore to be discovered and a very fun mini-game, not for everyone but it is a good invention no one has tried before.
- Mounts, horses, camels, flying mounts of different kinds. You can get your first mount at level 10 (which is a poor mount, but still helpful)
- The game does not hold your hand or spoon-feed you content. The content is there but you will have to explore to find it.
- Lots of races and classes to choose from
- Good community and never hard to find a group (at least this is so on Gelenia), quite possible to solo (I do that a lot as well) but it takes time.
- Player housing, good system for this as well, the houses are in the actual gameworld but there are special plots you can buy. There you or your friends can then build your own house.
- Player built boats and ships.
- Great graphics if you have a good system. My spec: A64 3500+, xfx 7800gt 256mb, 2gb ram. Runs the game well on balanced settings and increased drawing distances, and it is a beautiful world.
- Some good quests with intriguing storylines and fun events, but on the whole it is the usual mmo-quests.
- Non-instanced dungeons, which makes the dungeons seem much more a real part of the world.
- Immersiveness, which is the sum of all of the above pluses and design decisions.
Minus:
- Performance if you have an older system. Really ugly if you turn the graphics down to highest performance. I think they have some work left in tweaking their engine.
- Some say the graphics are dull, I don't agree. I much prefer VG-graphics to WoW or LOTRO (I got into beta yesterday), but some people still think this way.
- Bugs. Still a lot of them, but it is getting better. Much better now then when they launched the game. Still, the finish is quite poor compared to most games. WoW was much more polished on launch and LOTRO will also be really well polished (but a spoon-fed and hand-held game, I will play it anyway though)
- The grind is more of EQ1ish than WoWish and maybe it is on the grindy side of things, but the grind is fun and only a grind if you look at it that way. There are a lot of things to discover and explore even when grinding.
- Non-instanced dungeons, I write it here as well since with instances you can script events and tailor content much easier.
I think that is it. I have probably forgotten some things on both sides. If you want a game that feels in between Vanguard and WoW I would recommend that you try EQ2. It has been WoW:ified since launch, but that has only made EQ2 better in my opinion.
I play and will continue to play Vanguard, it is a game with an epic feel. I will however play LOTRO as well.
