Conan vs. Warhammer? Help!

Hello!  I've been playing MMOs for a while now and recently picked up Vanguard:SoH.  It's very boring to me and since I have played everything else that is out there, I am now bored and needing to know about what's next.

How do you all think Age of Conan and Warhammer Online will be in comparison to one another?

When I last had the choice between 2 MMOs I chose EQ2 over WoW and regretted it, not that I like WoW, just that it IS better than that horrible game EQ1.5.  I don't care for any MMOs out currently as they all have made me bored at one point or another and Lord of the Rings Online looks like a joke 5 years in the making.

I like item variety, fun gameplay, less of a grind, but I can sacrifice any of these for just the better game overall.

Please help me decide!!

Predictions would help too.  Just want to know what people think of the 2 games.

    Hello Eldan,

I can't say too much about Conan except that the gameplay videos I've seen so far didn't appeal to me much but of course that is just personal taste.

As for Warhammer Online feel free to visit my website at http://www.guildreborn.mmoguildsites.net/ and go to the forums. There is a section there called "About Warhammer". I have put a collection of videos together in that forum. I highly recommend checking those out. I did my best to pick out those that actually tell you stuff about the game and discarded everything else. Watching those should make it very clear whether Warhammer is for you or not. The developers make no excuses as to what Warhammer is all about. They tell you straight up - very refreshing if I may add.

Anyways, I hope this is helpful to you and maybe others.

    Cheers,

Thats a tought choice, i think both games will be great in their own respect. But i personally prefer Conan. Mainly due to the idea of player created cities and siege warfare. Im a huge pvp fan and in the fantasy world this is as close ill get to what EvE online is. The gameplay seems fast paced and innovative and the classes seem very interesting.  I think its a matter of preference since i wouldnt say which is better than the other, but personnaly im leaning towards AoC.

    Neither. They both look crap.

But ok,IF I had to make a choice I guess WAR would be the better of the two. I'm not voting for it though.

I have the exact problem in choosing between the two games AoC and Warhammer, and I found out a couple of days ago that Stargate Worlds have a planned release after the summer.  But I have read some about Conan and Warhammer and I favour AoC at the moment. The main reasons:

    1. It is going to be very different from other games on the marked with new fighting and spell tools. The collision detection gives tanks a new role, you can no longer run through people, and you have to choose where to hit on the foes(knee, head, torso aso.) Spellcasting will have something called spellweaving implemented, which gives a party of mages the ability to combine their spells for a more powerful effect. (mages will also be good at melee)

    2. Items/weapons/armor will not make a major difference, though it will have a certain effect. Also what you see on slain foes can be looted, you will not find a longsword of ultimate destruction +3 on a lion.

    3. Player run cities(build your own keep, castle, village), siege weapons, camel mounts, drunken brawling, mounted combat.

    4. The planned release is a few months before warhammer.

Warhammer will have RvR battles and the fans of the minature game will probably flock to this game. The developers of this game are well expierenced with pvp(the makers of DAoC) The player will contribute to the realm either by playing pvp or doing pve quests. Most fun with this game is that if you play as an orc, you will grow larger and your skin darkens as you get more xp. This game seems to me to be very like other games on the marked, and the ingame videos I have seen sofar didn't impress me. I will follow the progress of Warhammer onwards, mostly because a lot of my friends are planning to play the game.

Well, in Conan there are quite a few of singleplayer missions at the start. That might be a plus to you, i don't know.

You could wait for some kind of meaningful review once the two games actually reach a playable state.  Hype from fanboys doesn't really help very much.

I don't really think you can make an informed decision from watching some videos and listening to "Marketing Blah".

But of course you can have an opinion on both of the games.

AoC sure looks pretty nice with their shiny DX10 grafics. Characters looked nice, weapons and armor looked  a bit generic due to realism. But the great Combat System that everyone is waiting for looked damn boring to me. I'm postponing my final judgement until I have tried it myself - but from the looks I'm not impressed.

The whole world looks to me like the DAoC PvP Servers with some PVE Safezones and some sandbox features strapped to it - could work out fine if they do something to keep the Uberguilds from controlling everything.

    Warhammer

I have some concerns about the importance of instanced Scenarios it might be a bit too focused on these. And I really don't like the idea of the lua interface stuff, they might completely overshoot it like WoW did.

Other than that I think it will be a great gaming experience simply beacause they're not trying to outdo every other game in every area of gameplay. They're focusing on what they did best in the past: RVR

if you want something similar to current MMOs (gameplay wise) then choose WAR

if you want something different or new (gameplay wise) choose AoC

Both of these games will be good in their own right, its mostly a matter of preference when you are trying to decide between them.

For example, do you prefer constant realm versus realm PvP combat? WAR  Or would you prefer territory controll, building a city with your fellow guildmates, defending it to the last man, and then retaliating by sieging and razing your enemies keep? AoC

Also, would you prefer tried and true MMO methods (that are for once done well)? WAR  Or innovative and new concepts that the public might or might not end up enjoying? AoC

WAR has constant conflict down pat, as well as world teamwork having an effect on everything your side does.

AoC has its realtime combat system and a VERY extensive character customization (both in terms of appearance and skill choices). The AI is also looking to be quite phenomenal, think a step or two up from Oblivion.

I voted for AoC on your poll there because it's what I'm waiting for. If I had to give advice though which I hate doing, I'd say don't limit yourself to two titles. Take a look at more games on their way, their sites, forums, and fan postings and gauge them as they grow right on up until they're ready to play. My list of games I'm keeping track of might be too long, with four or five games, which I'll narrow down as more information and actual hands on activity comes out.

Comparing W.A.R to any other MMO is kind of pointless anyways as WAR is not going after the entire MMO target market like all other MMOs do. It was said you shouldn't listen to some marketing guy? Well, actually listening to him is EXACTLY what you should do because if you pay attention he tells many people NOT to play the game. WAR makes no fuss about what it is and what audience they're going for. If you are part of that particular audience you will love WAR like nothing else. If you are not, you will hate it to death. The irony is that the developers are telling you right now that you will hate it and that you should not buy it. Of course that won't stop the flamers from buying it anyways and then spamming these forums with "omgz it's teh suk!!!111!shift+1!!". I can't wait to link some of those year old clips when people come here and say "oh noes I can't make pantz".

I find it rather refreshing that a WAR takes an honest approach instead of pretending to be the end all be all of MMOs like all other MMOs do.

Like Barentt says...."It's no good coming to our game if you're trying to grow wheat. It's no good coming to our game if you want to make pants. It's only worth coming to our game if you want to burn things to the ground, grind things to dust, stand on top of the battlements waving the severed heads of people going 'We're better than you' in lots of glorious ways."

or when he was asked: "but don't you have to make a game that appeals to a number of different play styles?" .... the answer was simply "errr...no you don't".

WAR - very fun, very soon, good PVP, very balanced and easy to get into...  but with some hot potatos, like instancing, many artificial limitations preventing griefing and after you do the whole sacking of enemy capital few times it could all get very boring, very fast, that is if you are into roleplaying, exploring and epic journeys..

AoC - more of a longterm investment where it will be good to make some valuable sovial connections and being in a guild will be more then just having people to raid endgame (town building, weapon building), there will be a rich crafting system and PVP will be mostly guild based as opposed to WARs realm based, although it has lvl's, there are some tricks that will not leave you at mercy of higher lvl players

I look forward to trying out WAR but plan on playing AoC longterm, the whole guild run citys and more of persistand world feal that I get from reading about AoC is way more apealing to me than WARs war war war strictly PVP centric gameplay, btw. AoC plans to have a rich and interesting PVP system also, but not as a be all, end all feature of a game

    WAR - MMOG

    Still to early to tell.

I most likely will get both.  WAR for the PC and AoC for the X-Box 360.

I think Warhammer will provide the quicker instant satisfaction dare I say FPSish where almost as soon as you log in you will be able to instantly do some meaningfull PVP (low level RVR type combat).  I don't know I used to be a AOC fanboi by Warhammer just looks like it will be fun, not saying AOC will not.. But it just looks like it will be the more fun of the two.

Knowing Funcom like I do (Played AO for a few years) I think AOC will be the more complex and the one that will provide more depth, be that with weapons, items, crafting, group dungeons, etc. I think AOC will have a great mixture of exploring, combat, and depth.  Anarchy Online was one of the most well rounded MMORPG's I have every played and I believe that AOC will follow suit on that front.

One of the deciding factors for me was the casters, in every MMORPG that I play I love being a caster.. And one of the things that WOW got right was letting caster be mobile (Mages, locks). I just like the look and feel of casters in Warhammer, what im hearing from AOC is that casters will be sorta sitting ducks (Powerfull sitting ducks) but it just doesn't seem like they will be able to cast things and mover around like you can in WOW and Warhammer.  Hopefully when AOC comes up with a better more indepth video of casters I might change my mind, but right now im picking Warhammer over AOC. The setup they have for the RvR type combat sounds awesome as well.

Thanks all!  This information combined with a little research myself leads me to believe I will enjoy Conan more.  I am just sick of the basic formula I guess.  Call me crazy but I think Auto Assualt, even though they did it wrong imo,  was on to something with the very much more action oriented gameplay.  I will continue to watch WAR and keep an open mind but I like the idea of playing AoC on my Xbox360

if you are looking for WoW2 (and I mean that in the best possible way, WoW=wanna be warhammer world) go with WAR...

If you like PvP with a purpose, or real innovation in combat and other mechanics, (spells and types of crafting), AoC is the place to be...

I loved city sieges and mine fights in Shadowbane, so AoC is like a wet dream of good gfx and a dev team that knows how to actually make an MMO
