Which Superhero MMO would you play...if any?

With DC Online and Marvel Online in development I'm curious to know what game players might try out first.

  • Whichever one had the best gameplay and class stuff.  However all things being equal I have always like Marvel more than DC.

I don't really know about CoX, I actually rather like a lot of stories and stuff in it.  I just get this sort of sneaking suspicois that of the three, story-wise, CoX might turn out better than either  of the the other two when placed inside an MMORPG.  But that the other two make better comic books.  I can't why its just a vague feeling I get.

None, really wanted to like CoH but couldn't get past the whole superhero thing. Just not my thing.

You never wore underroos?  I had some spiderman underroos.  They were the shiznitz.  I also had the Flash undrroos which is a funny juxtaposiition.

When I  was a kid after a bath I used to go and get a small blanket and safety pin and pin it around my neck and run around pretending I was flying like a super hero.  Of course I hadn't put anything back on yet making it doubly fun.

I loved CoH. Im really curious to see whats ganna be different about DC online and marvel online comapred to CoH. as far as i know CoH did all u can with super heroes IMO. did awsome, smooth graphix, charector customization, fun...few things with gameplay that wasnt to cool, but..still great game.

Marvel online being developed by Criptic Studios, published by Microsoft Game Studios... has a chance at being something cool.

DC Online developed inhouse by SOE, blech.  Things wont be Comicy or Iconic enough so they will end up NGE'ing it up at some point :P plus it will most likely be a ps3/pc title... blech.

COH/COV was fun for a while... but the most fun was just playing dressup and creating people.  Didnt really enjoy the mundane missions that they had set up, there wasnt enough of a story or a worldly feel to the game.

I love CoX's character customization, polish, and graphics.

I hate the fact that CoX is just so damn repetitive. There litterally isn't anything to do in that game except missions and some occasional PvP. It sucks because there's a ton of emotes to RP with. I've never gona base raiding because I can't seem to find a guild that is fun and doesn't just recruit people to amke their SGs bigger.

I love Marvel comics and a few DC titles as well, although DC dropped the ball WAY more than Marvel.

The thing is that everytime Marvel makes a video game... it sucks. They add in tons of cheese and little to no innovation. Not to mention they always feature the same handful of characters that get featured in every other game.

I'm hoping that the guys at Cryptic will realize how tediously repetitive CoX is and design the new Marvel game with more flavor, cooler travel powers, a skill based system, sandbox, with player housing AND guild housing.

Is there any info or a websit up yet for the Marvel MMO?

I have to say Marvel being developed by Cryptic, something tells me they learned from the mistakes they had in making COH/V.. Hopefully they understand that 'Fun' is not going to cut it in a MMORPG your going to need other things like Depth, PVP, Crafting, Outdoor quest, etc.

Hopefully the include that in the Marvel title and improve on what they did with COH/V.

I still play CoX now and then but there isn't enough to do.  It eventually gets to the point where you know the layout of all the tilesets.  I enjoy the look,  the story arcs, the combat and the archetypes.  Having said that, I can only play in short-ish stints or it gets boring, due to it's repetitive nature.

I'm sorry but this is the type of mentality that has made the MMORPG market as flooded as it is with carbon copies of previous games.

Crafting doesn't belong in every game. Crafting sucks. Yes this is my opinion and I know that tons of people disagree. However, comic based games shouldn't include crafting in it's current incarnation... no MMO should have a laundry list of what it should have, based on other games.

I hope that every developer out there, not just the guys developing Marvel Univers Online, strive to break the mold and give us games that are both fresh and fun without the tedium of grinds and timesinks.

So Batman and other superheros that use gadgets, you know things you can make (AHH CRAFT) have no place in comic books aye...

Like I said hopefully Cryptic learned from their mistake, it appers they learned from their mistake of not having crafting and PVP just look at what they did and are doing in COX...

Cryptic's valuation of crafting is a settled point.  CoX will have crafting in the next two or three months in Issue 9 via the Invention system.

Not yet that I have been able to find.  As with the Bioware MMO I wouldnt expect too much information about it really until after the next major trade show, or at the event formerly known as E3 :D

CoH/CoV was fun. It probably had the best combat system I've seen in an MMO but I don't care for the direction they have started to go with their issues so I can't see myself playing it again.

Marvel. Depends how Cryptic design it. I don't care for superheros themselves but I do like them more then Elves and Orcs at this stage so depending on the design I might give it a look.

DC ... SoE are developing it ... that's enough for me to never play it.

I'm a huge CoH/CoV fan but there are two things that they fell short on -- first was content.  Everyone universally agrees that the game (even now) needs more diverse, dynamically generated mission maps and some more missions.  The second thing it needs is character customization 2.0 ala Freedom Force (FF).  Don't get me wrong, I have a ball creating characters in CoH but it was lacking one little bit. Discarding the fact that you could create your own models and skins for FF since it was single player, what they did let you do is effectively CREATE your own powers.  They gave you a whole bunch of damage types and, separately, a whole bunch of effects.  If CoX could let you place custom effects on your character or you various weapon models with the same skill sets, it would take customization to a whole new level.

If you haven't played Freedom Force, I highly recommend going out and getting it.  The original can be found in the bargain bin and the sequel, Freedom Force versus the Third Reich, should be dropping in price.

Why is it so hard to comprehend what you read?

Maybe if you didn't have the attention span of a five year old, you would see what I wrote instead of seeing what you want to see.

I'll spell out what you missed in all caps so you can understand as I can't verbally speak slow enough for you to understand.

"Comic based games shouldn't include crafting IN IT'S CURRENT INCARNATION."

Maybe you don't know what that means.

If so it means that I don't think crafting in the form that it's in a loot, harvest, combine system like every other game, belongs in a comic based game.

    Here's why:

You start giving every character a "utility belt" in their UI with backpacks and sacks to carry around loot that they get off of super villians and the only thing you've accokmplished is to make a WoW clone with superhero skins.

I appreciate the fact that currently CoX is a breath of fresh air insofar as the differences in gameplay and background of an MMO are concerned.

Currently we've been flooded with clones and rehashes of the same old tired ideas, games, timesinks, and grinds.

It always amazes me how people on these boards zero in on a piece of what someone posts and then flies off the handle.

This kind of tunnel vision is both self defeating to you and annoying to everyone else. It only takes a few seconds to read someone's whole post.

I read that the invention system will do exactly this.

The "enhancements" that you make with the invention system will be permanent and you won't out lvl them.

Power customization has been something that the CoX community has been asking for for a long time.

After I posted this stuff last night I logged on to CoH and I played for about 4 hours straight. I had alot of fun... more fun than I've had playing Vanguard. As a matter of fact, I'm about to log back in to CoH and play some more.

    Sony + DC.

Sony is a turn off. DC I will get to.

COH. realy enjoyed it. Until the nerfs. City of Nerfs.

    Cryptic + Marvel

Cryptic = the ones who nerf. Marvel like DC I will get to below.

Marvel and DC, vs an invented universe.

In Marvel and DC, you will want to play your favourite heroes, Wolverine and Batman. To go up against your favourite villains.

But you won't be able to. Your heroes will be quest givers, your villians still available to fight.

I prefer game worlds where you are the central charcter, the biggest heroes. Not playing second fiddle to an NPC. Especially if it is an NPC you yourself wanted to play.

Really enjoyed Marvel Ultimate Alliance last year. Best RPG of the year. Play any or many of your favourite Marvel characters. In an mmo, this won't be an option.

Calm down child, did we have a bad day at Sunday school?

You spout off about how I didn't read your whole post, when Indeed I did. I just stated my opinion that Crafting can and should fit into a Superhero type game and gave the reason why.

Not every Superhero/VIllian is a Superman. Some build gadgets (AKA craft) so how in the hell do you expect them to build their gadgets if they do not make them...

I am not a fan of crafting either, however I know that tons of people are and in order to make a truely successful game your going to have to appeal to a wide range of people.  I just stated what I believe a Superhero MMORPG should have in order to do that.

At this early stage DC universe is looking good.  Jim Lee ftw!

Marvel universe is tied to Microsoft, which tends to mean it will have lots features implemented just well enough to make the marketing blurb but will be meaningless otherwise and everything else will be generic and forgettable.

Also, given their track record, having ties to Microsoft is good enough reason to avoid the product completely as they don’t do anything that isn’t aimed at grabbing or exploiting a vertical monopoly.

I really loved CoH/CoV, most especially CoV.

The custumization of the character creation tool is one of the best of any game out there and they did alot of the "neat" things right, like fying and powers and the such. The only thing I really could not handle was the repetitiveness of the game and the fact that in the end, it has absolutely no point and is useless in terms of story content.

That's about where my comic book experience stops though, I really could tell anyone the difference between DC or Marvel and I really could care less. That's not to say I wouldn't play them, if they took alot of the good stuff from CoV and put it in with a story that progressed or gameplay that moved forward, I'd try it out.

I hate Sony so I had no interest in DC comics online game but Jim Lee is involved so I'll give it a 0.00001% chance which is more than what it had before he was involved.

The Marvel game has the most potential but after Cryptic's heavy nerfing of CoH and the infrequent updates it looks less and less likely that they're going to produce and maintain this project long term.

So the correct answer is "none" :P
