Theres not much to really complain about, except the fact that it offers nothing new. It is strong for the same reasons WOW is strong, and in fact uses most of the same systems. It from what I have seen is extremely well written and stable. With that said, I'm not going to be touching the game ever again, quite simply because I've already played all the way through several of its clones. Actually, I'm a little bitter about the topic, because I've been a lifelong fan of tolkien's works, and it would not have taken much to get me hooked onto the LOTR world, yet Turbine failed in this regard.
Vanguard was just bad, not only was it not innovative, but it has several horrible weaknesses, hence the constant flaming.
I could not agree more about the sorry state of this genre of games.
It seems like we have long intervals of time where nothing is released. Then finally when something is released, it has 0 innovation or dare I say it... the game is released incomplete and essentially in beta. But that’s right, you still have to pay that 14.99.
Vanguard has a great concept with very poor implementation, where as LotRO is nicely implemented with very little in the department of”wow that was awesome, I can't wait to see what comes next" factor that I personally crave.
Mmorpgs are all essentially”carrot on a stick" games, but my carrots have to run well and be content rich ^^. Also, metaphorically speaking of course, I like it when the carrots are shiny and graphically expansive, with new, over the top, spell graphics when I finally get that new level carrot. Vanguard furthermore seems in an early state of development, with obvious aesthetic problems and issues with bugs, performance, and clipping to name a few. It’s a good game at the core, but it needs a lot more and it needed it before it went live. Brad and the Devs could have started with all the promised content that is just not there and no where in sight really since they are essentially broke as stated by some press releases. But hey, that’s enough vanguard bashing for me. It was fun while it lasted.
As for LotRO, nah I'm not going to play. I'll wait for distant days where verdant mmorpgs will spring forth from the garbage we got atm. Look out console gaming, here I come.
Vanguard to many people represents a step backward in the advancement of MMOs as a genre. I think this plays a large part (along, of course, with the SOE hate) in regard to the extremely negative attention. In turn, the niche group that's actually been waiting for this kind of game doesn't want to see it watered down or lessened in some way, so they are fighting just as desperately to preserve it.
Lastera, I really must say that I do not agree with one bit of your assessment. Before I go into the reasons, I will start by saying this - if by "fanboy" you mean "have you read the books and watched the movies" then yes I am a fanboy. Beyond that, I'm just a gamer. I just wanted to reply to this. Fanboy as in blindly follow and being devoid an actual credible opinion. I also read the books, the sing-a-long cartoon and played all three PS2 games. I'm a huge LotR fan and even bigger fantasy genre fan this, but I never let my love of something prevent me from actually make a good judgment.
I don't care if you like the graphics. This still doesn't take away from the fact the game doesn't use 3D engine or use 3D graphics. It's the year 2007 and this game is still using graphics from DOOM. Like Aeflinn said, the reason no one is talking about this game is because it didn't do anything new. There's no reason to go on crusade against this game because it was made by Turbine...nuff said.
So you don't have to make a counter posts as if they make everything I say untrue. You're still going to play this game, I'm going to continue to playing WoW and this game is going to be a sleeper-hit with Turbine fans. And I'm out because there isn't anything else to talk about.
So.........Captain, you've slinked your way to the LOTRO topics I see, the spew this guy has come out with on the DDO forums is.........well, go into any post on the DDO forums........also look for posts by his alter ego.............CaptainRPG! It's all fun on the DDO boards

LoTRO came in under the radar, not a lot of hype so not a lot of let down. Vanguard was hyped to hell and back just like DArk and Light was, peopl ehad high expectations of both games so their crap release quality was just a slap in the face for a lot of people. Also LoTRO is just a good quality solid game, not a great game by any means but damn good and that sure beats shitty any day of the week. On an off note it sure is selling a hell of a lot of pre orders though going by the Amazon.com and EB Games numbers.
IMO LOTRO is a lot like GW, you can't play it too much or else it would get boring and you would lose interest, that is why I play GW and LOTRO less often in case I completely lose interest in them.
There's alot of honesty in the game, if that even makes sense. There's a clarity to how it's made, run and what it's about.
In the end, It's just easier to say that it's a good game overall.
Aside from the obligatory Vanguard bashing there's allot of truth in the above statement.
LOTR doesn't claim to be the greatest thing since sliced bread. I think that's what I like about LOTR and WOW is their honesty. Despite what ardent fanbases will tell you both Turbine and blizzard know their limitations and work within them. If you can't give players the moon & the stars don't claim to provide it.
In the end their both slick & fast little romps that accomplish what they've set out to do.
Say what you will but there's something to be said for focus.
LOTRO is what it is. A fun, polished game with exceptional graphics playable on many systems. There is a lot to do using successful forumla's from past MMORPGs. LOTRO promises little, but delivers a lot. That being said, I haven't played in over two weeks. The game might not be for me, or I may just be waiting to be able to play with friends. Vanguard on the other hand is a nicely wrapped box of Godiva chocolates, with dog shit inside.
Its hard to hate or praise an average game. Its complete which makes it better then most games. Its definetly not the best, but pretty average and not worth caring about. In the end its very much like WoW, a few aspects better and a few worse.

Thats too bad because LoTRO is a game where the more you play it the more intricate it gets. It's really a pretty deep game once you look into it. Traits, titles, adoption, player generated music. Most of those have been in other games but still I cannot think of a single game they have all been in.
Whatever though, no shoe fits every foot and the game is going to be a pretty big hit, whether you like the game, hate it, or are just luke warm about it is up to each to decide.

Hey, hey, hey now! There's nothing obligatory about my Vanguard bashing.
Just because I think Brad McQuaid is full of it, as is his so called "vision" or just because I think the hype for Vanguard is complete Public Relations BS does not mean I'm bashing the game .
Truth be told and don't let this get around, I actually think Vanguard is a fine game.

Brad McQuaid is full of it. I do not dislike Vangaurd or Brad McQuaid. But this is not opinion. Half of the stuff he says is constructed BS. Simply pick it apart and you will notice half of it nonsense dressed up to look like something cool. Both BMQ and EQ by extension try to have thing both ways. I do not accuse him of lying, he is merely full of it whether he knows it or not. I tend to beleive he does not know he is full of it.
I personally think Vanguard is a perfectly adequate game. Not the sort of game I want to play but perfectly adequate. But then again by BMQ 's and some Vanguard player's definition of "hard" I have played RPGs 10 times harder, since punishing is hard to them. So all that stuff I just look at and chuckle, I had all those discussion back in the early 90's with both players and Devs live and no on a forum; people just see it different. Losing 1/3 of your lifetime total xp was pointless and depressing to me, for others it gave meaning. Spending days of playtime to go from level 60 to level 70 and then losing those 10 levels in a blink of an eye well that added nothing special to my play expereince, but other lamented it when they bumped it to 1/4 of your lifetime xp. As if losing 3 days of playing time instead of 4 suddenly made people less afraid.
People find their own meaning I guess, I just wish people wouldn't assume their's is the same as mine. I think that was one of my biggest problems with the Devs on my old MUD some could not wrap their head around the fact that for some of us what they thought was meaningful simply had no value. Its like they honestly thought that every single person must react to a death penalty similarly, only varying in degree. Its just not that way. I never want to die, dying is losing and I always fight to win. The penalty just makes me depressed because it ruins my progress. Other people must flagellate themselves or they think its meaninless. They are just different views of life. I have always been the way I am, I don't care about competition. Whem I wrestled I really never like tournaments or cared whether I won a tournament, but inside the match itself I not only fought to win I fought to pin. Every ounce of strength on that mat, off the mat meh win, lose, whatever. Other people they love the competition, they hate to lose and the threat of loss drives them to practice until they achieve excellence. People are just different.

Well, the graphics have come a long way since the last time I saw it.
But graphics don't make a game....and this one looks poor.
