I'm getting sick of the cookie cutter MMOs, but there has yet to be a good fantasy MMO thats as good as UO was in its day. I still hold out hope that one day a good, original fantasy MMO will be released.

Well I for one am not, simply because developers have yet to make a fantasy game (which I prefer) that I really can get behind.

I figure eventually they will get it right.

Well blizzards next MMO which they have comfirmed to be working on they say is nothing like Warcraft, they also hint at a new Starcraft, so maybe some kind of starcraft MMO/RTS hybrid?

I agree.  I'd like to play something different.  I'm a bit weary of fantasy, too.  Although CoX is fun now and then, I'd like a good full featured non-fantasy setting MMORPG.  CoX just doesn't have enough content to play full time for me.

those fantasy mmo's r like the most used type of mmo ever. and yes, because it sells. its just cooler than the sci-fi mmo's out there and its alrady developed a massive community, from everquest, WoW, runescape, to knight online, lineage, etc.

To get a non fantasy based mmorpg to sell big, wouldn't they have to set it up so that it caters the role playing and looting crowed crowed? Would be tough to fit that into a non fantasy game maybe.

    Reason is pretty obvious tbh...

companies are afraid to try something new because if they flop they are screwed.. so why not just base your game on some other companies successfull mmo and then just add a few bits and change a few bits and wola it would sell.

what a bunch of cowards i should say (or maybe idiots who cannot think of an original plot)

Well, you can do stuff like support the sci-fi games that are out now or that are coming out. Developers are blind, they can't see forum posts, they navigate by smelling money. :-p Or their bosses, publishers, and shareholders do, which ends up being the same thing.

Probably.  I suppose you'd have to be very clever to really grab people's attention in other settings.  Fantasy lends itself to role playing so nicely.  Some sorts of science fiction would probably work.  It wasn't too bad in SWG back in the olden days.  Post apocalypse would probably be an attractive setting as would something a bit Gothic.  Hopefully, some of the different themed MMOs being worked on will be good enough to survive development and make us happy.

Not many people are willing to lose several million dollars (and I believe it's much more than "several") to see if an idea will work. Would you? And you don't even need to lose several million.

How much money do you have invested in a game company where you are willing to lose a good chunk of it. 10 thousand? 20 thousand?

I wonder how many of you would gladly lose 20 thousand dollars on an investment that "may" come through.

I do think the fantasy side has been done to death, but there will always be a special place in my heart for it. A growing problem for companies is, I guess, that for each new fantasy game that comes out its an ever smaller piece of the pie. Perhaps they are focused on the real top games which make huge bucks and forget about the so-so games that will typically lose money (I am guessing here). So, whats to be done, other suggestions, horror is pretty much untouched, as is a western theme, pirates are just starting to come in as are more historical games. How about fantasy with a bit of a twist, playing as giant bugs f'rinstance. Post nuclear or ice age have just popped into my mind (perhaps they should pop out again) anyway, I am sure you guys can think of hundreds of great ideas .... lets here them...

Speaking from a development leader point of view....

That is pretty much exactly the problem.  Its not a lack of creativity or ideas.  There are plenty of ideas out there, and there are plenty of independent development groups who want to make sci-fi mmo's.  One of the most common being various space fighters and mech fighter mmo's, a type of mmo-fps cross-over.  The problem comes in, like you said, if they spend the money to develop an epic game like that and put all the work in that would be required, well, if it doesn't sell and sell well they are all screwed.  The developers don't get payed, the game doesn't get maintained, and the company fails.  Its too risky for ANY company that isn't WAY on top of itself.  Personally, theres only two major developers who I think would have the money to make such a game and take that risk.  Those companies are Blizzard Entertainment and Sony.  Thats just it, they're the only ones who could but they won't, or most likely won't.  Blizzard's only association with anything not of that style would be Starcraft, and a Starcraft MMORPG would be interesting, but I don't think Blizzard is read or willing to make that kind of game, not yet.  They already pulled the plug on one major project for Starcraft, that being Starcraft: Ghost.  Sony on the other hand, will throw money at almost anything they see any money coming back, but they ARE the people who lack the truly good and original ideas.

Until the MMORPG market truly shows interest in non-fantasy mmo's, thats all you're going to see, because thats the only proven way to work.  The closest to sci-fi the mmorpg industry has had was Star Wars: Galaxies, and we all know that game was not very good.  SWG I personally believe scared a lot of big developers away from the sci-fi area.

Thats my opinion from a development view.

Well i agree with you for the most part OP. But i like fantasy mmos's. The thing that really urks me is that they keep doing that same thing over and over and rehashing... same quest styles etc, its sickening (in my opinion). What I would love to see is someone break the mold and make something like a mmorpgfps, THAT would be cool.

But i feel ya man, its horrible....
