thanks for the input everyone...seems like wow is the best choice.
That isn’t really related to what you asked. Total subscriber numbers really don’t tell you anything. If we assumed the game with the most subscribers is the best, shouldn’t we also assume McDonalds is the best restaurant because it serves the most people?
Something to remember is that WoW spreads its population out over nearly 1000 servers worldwide. EVE in contrast doesn’t have nearly as many players as WoW but all of them play on the same server. In peak hours EVE can have over 30 000 players connected to the same server. In North America WOW may have 600 000 spread over 250 servers, or around 2500 on an average server.
If by "the best" you mean a combination of price, quality, service, availability and time then yes, McDonalds is the best restaurant. If you only consider whether the food is healthy or not, then no, it isnt.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.

What is it with Eve-Online and Vanguard fans, and their food analogies? What are you guys starving or something. Every time you make a comparison you use food as an example. Not to mention it's a retarded comparison at best. Drawing a parallel between a necessity and a hobby is stupid. If you are going to do a comparison between two things. For the love of all things holy at least make sure they are relevant to each other.
In War - Victory. In Peace - Vigilance. In Death - Sacrifice.
Unfortunately, what you "heard" and what is going on are often two very different things...
Company statistics Vs. Something you "heard"
The numbers look pretty right on from where I'm sitting... go to the sources that the numbers were drawn from... after all the bloke was nice enough to reference his data for all of you skeptics
Im wondering because i want to try some other MMO, and prefer high populations for groups and PVP.
wow only has like around 200k subscribers per battlegroup, and much less subscribers per server for PvE stuff, especially when you further divide that since horde can't talk to alliance. So overall subscriptions might not be that important to you, just subscriptions per server.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You? if I were to kill a titan tomorrow and no CCP employees showed up to say grats I would petition it. Waiting for: the next MMO that lets me make this macro if hp < 30 then CastSpell("heal") SpellTargetUnit("player") else CastSpell("smite") end

If you're directing that at me, you might be well advised to look at what I said I had "heard", then look at the www.mmorpgchart.com for the game I said and then apologize. Though, it should also be noted www.mmorpgchart.com has not been updated in 6 months so the figures are less than this now.
And there in Large Red print is the key to WoW's success. Same as any other Asian Game claiming to have millions of subscribers. They list anyone who has accessed the game within the last 30 days using an internet gaming room as a subscriber. That is not the same as a NA/EU subscriber who pays their ~ $15 per month to play the game.
You do understand that the 3.5 miilon westerners who are not only paying that $15 a month but have also paid $75 on discs are still the largest population of Western MMO players in the history of mankind by a factor of about 20 times.
If you add all the other Western MMO subscribers paying $15 together you get about 1/3 of the subscribers of WoW.
I understand you don't like WoW, but it is successful, and in an entirely seperate league from all the other MMO's.
i think theres around 4 million players (6 million+ accounts), with around 1 million members. Jagex has never released numbers though, so my numbers come from other sites, whihc could not be 100% reliable.
Our ambition for 2006 is to exceed 900,000 subscribers for RuneScape, to take RuneScape into other non-english language markets and to develop further games using our technologies.
