"Keep your character after launch"

Are they serious? They're gonna let people keep beta characters after launch? Seems like a bad idea to me, simply because I'm one of those people that like fresh starts where everyone is kinda still exploring the game and chatting a lot, with the newbies areas being full all the time, I dunno I just like that experience and sincerely I wouldn't like to see high level characters in the first days playing this, assuming I would only play it after it launched. What do you think of this?

Also is it me or did WoW had a pretty considerable influence on the creators of LotRO? Not that this would be a bad thing, I'm just saying I saw many similarities from the in-game videos I've been watching.

Actually, they're doing a wipe right before the open beta.

So the characters that are running around now at the moment are not the characters that people are allowed to keep.

(and from what I've read/heard the characters that are being kept and transfered over to the live servers are capped to level 15. But don't quote me on that. That's just something I've read on the official boards somwhere)

Preorders stil get 10 days to whack bunnies before live so you will prolly see players around lvl30 running around, and ah filled with goodies to spend your hard earned mowgles ;)

Not that im going to be one of em, heck i just my guardian to lvl20 and i have been in beta for months.

There will be a character wipe at the end of closed beta at the end of March.  Everyone will start from level 1 on the first day of Open Beta.  They are only allowing one character per account to be carried over into launch, and that character has a level cap of 15.  This is for preorder customers only.

So no, you won't be seeing level 50's on the first day.

As for WoW, it's had an influence on every MMO released after it.

@JonMichael.... checked the lotro site and couldn't find that info you just stated... got a link?   THANKS.

Well, single-toon at lvl-15 cap is not much of anything. Granted, after a month of open-beta, might be the most powerfully spec'd 15 imagineable.... I played a little over the weekend and as was at lvl 12 easy. That's like 1 or 2 days of playing to get to 15..... nice info.

    Sure!

It's in the ComicCon interview here on MMORPG.com:

"Jeff was quick to talk about the Founder's System in LOTRO that is available for players. No, it is not a game mechanic; it is a way of paying for the game. Jeff told me that he really wanted a way to reward players who got into the game from the beginning. The Founder's System not only allows you to pay $9.99 a month, but it will also allow you to keep your characters after open beta and into launch with the only catch being that the transfer character level cap is fifteen. Turbine sees the pre-orders as a way to not only reward loyal players, but give them a leg up in the game. Their hope is that this will help to build a community. If a player can reach level fifteen in beta and transfer that character to launch, they will have an impact right away. It gives them the ability to help other lower level players and build community relationships faster. "

It doesn't definitely say that you can only have one character, but I did think I read that somewhere... although I might be wrong about that. :)

Thanks guys, this sheds new light on the whole thing cause I read that quoted line on their official website and it didn't say anything about a level cap. So, even though I see it as a marketing strategy to pull in more preorders I'm ok with it cause every game developer does it, and since they limit you to level 15 it doesn't really handicap the ones starting after beta.

If the level cap is 15, I hope it's not limited to just one transfer. In a month of open beta, I could get all 7 classes to 15 (which wouldn't be a huge advantage, just nifty if I wanted something different, though I guess 2 of them would have to be on a different server..) and get a fair amount of gold farming/crafting done.

The one character is pretty much a definite. One of the devs spoke about it on the beta forums. Sorry, I don't have the quote handy, but it is there I know for sure.

"Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..."

Another good point about this (if it pans out this way) is that it will spread out the initial players... so it will not be EVERYONE in the starter area on day one; which of course results in that crazy mob-camping that was going on during the stress test in the starter areas.

I was about to make the same point. I think its a very smart move to help thin out the initial flood of new players in starting zones.

This isn't a competition to get to max level. Although I plan to pre-order, I wouldn't be upset if I didn't and found level 15 characters running around on day one. Although I've already joined a guild, I plan to take my time with this game and really soak up the lore. Since this game isn't exclusively group-centric I have no worries about falling behind the leveling curve should that actually happen.

It was already said above that only one character is transferrable from open to release.

They are probably going to be tweaking that.  Over the weekend they ran a couple contests to see who could get to level 15 the fastest, with the speculation being it was a test to fine tune XP amounts to promote or more likely slow level progression.  I personally felt is was all going by a bit too quick and could be slowed down a little.

I'm searching for the thread that was mentioned now.

By the way.... what about the items on the character? Do those transfer aswell? Or do we transfer "in the nude"?

Because if the items/money do transfer we will have a hysterical money-, monster- and trinket-hoardning during open beta.

I'm rather disappointed to about the level 15 cap. I've gotten very attached to my level 22 Gaurdian.

Attached or not... the one that you have now will be battered and wiped before open beta anyway...

But I feel with you, I'm getting rather attached to my mad li'l farmer-woman aswell. Her weed farming skills will be sorely missed...

The big question isn't your character but your monsters.  If I can keep the progress I make on my monsters during open beta then I'm just getting my character to level 10 and focusing on monster play.

Unfortunately, any characters in beta at the moment will be wiped at the end of March before the open beta starts, so you wouldn't be able to bring your guardian into launch anyway.  :(

I'm gonna be missing my lvl 24 Captain too.. but at least I'll know how to play him better in the lower levels the next time around.

It's going to be wiped before open beta anyway, don't get too attached.

We get to keep our OPEN BETA characters... not our current closed ones.

Thought you guys would appreciate an update. Patience, the CRM, has posted a Q&A on the official forums about Open Beta Characters.

Summary: You get to carry over 5 characters, not just 1.

    Hi everyone,

There have been lots of questions about Open Beta and how characters will transfer from Open Beta to Live, so we wanted to try to answer them in one place.

Q: When does Open Beta start?

A: Open Beta begins on March 30 for Pre-order customers and April 6th for the general public.

Q: How many characters can I carry from Open Beta?

A: Players may have up to 5 characters per server, and all characters from all servers will be carried over.

    Q: What's the level cap?

A: The level cap is set to 15. Once you hit level 15, your character will no longer receive experience until the game goes live on April 24th.

Hope that answers some of your questions!

    -Meghan
