I guess that makes every other MMORPG less than garbage?

Gads you don't know just how true that statement is.  The funny thing is that it's not just a matter of perception but a matter of taste (or lack of). It kinda reminds me of the french and escargo, they may frown on us yanks while we gorge ourselves on chili cheese dogs calling us uncultered and that thats not real food but all the while they are casting despersions on our food they are munching on snails.

My point, being clear as mud, goes to the OP's statement of "even non-gamers" playing WOW. See that's basicly stating that the only true gamers play WTH game the OP considers as a game when in fact almost every person in the world is a gamer. Some play games on computer while others play pen and paper games  or Gads even card games. Base ball, basket ball, foot ball, heck even cricket (HTF do you play in?) are games people play.  Where's Waldo is a game and can be quite fun to play in any busy city all you need is a few friends and a stocking cap. When my sons play paint ball they are playing a game...  But you get the point.

WOW is sucessfull for two (2) simple reasions that are required to play any game.

    1. Anyone can understand the rules.

    2. it's fun! This is because it's pollished.

All you have to do is look at fishing in WOW, like some one mentioned above what makes it fun is that you never know what you will pull out, it could be a fish or it could be a box and inside could be an empty wallet or a +20 singing sword of space gerbil slaying.

yes I play WOW and EVE and BF2 and CS and chess and MTG and D&D (P&P) and even run a ShadowRUN campain now and then but it's not playing these than make me a gamer, others and I play these because we are gamers and thats what gamers do.

    1. Name recognition and consumer base. WoW is the first mmorpg to be based on an earlier series of games, that means that out of say 10000 warcraft fans you have 10000 gamers, there has been other "big names" up there like Star wars but im pretty sure Star Wars fans while there are alot of them, not all of them are gamers.

By using the warcraft name they are aiming for an almost pure gamer fanbase to start with.

Heh, not really - do you know something about this little-known Ultima Online series? If not - I can tell you then that this is the example of mmorpg based on an earlier series of games.

    2. Its polished. World of Warcraft is the first mmorpg i have ever played where most things worked at launch, there was no glitch after glitch, no bugs, almost all skills worked, the zones where nice and mostly finished and there was a ton of quests.

All right, but it was said before like... 100 times?

    3. Its easy, the game requires almost no focus on the part of the player if you play your character at about 30% of its potential you win in pve, and the majority of quests are easily soloable, there is no real interdependancy between classes.

Ok, it's very easy - but do you really think that a lack of challenge makes 8 millions of people play this game?

Just pointing I disagree with this post, don't mean to offend you or anything.

I missed this part of your post. I might have mistakingly thought you ment Diablo 2. I now see you were asking about Warcraft. WoW also took from Warcraft, but to a much lesser extent. There is the name obviously. Also more - many, many, names in WoW, mostly MOBs, their abilities, come directly from Warcraft. A friend of mine who is heavily into Warcraft, said he was surprised when he first played WoW at how many names he recignized from Warcraft. He instantly hand an idea of what moves to expect from those MOBs.  Whereas me, who once was heavily into Diablo 2, or anyone else not as into Warcraft, did not recignize the names, and hand no idea what moves to expect. Warcraft players get a slight edge when playing WoW.

But once anyone gets at least 1 character to level 60 (now level 70) they know pretty much what to expect from the majority of MOBs. The slight edge Warcraft players have is mostly evident when players level up their first character.

Why WoW is successful? Because they made right game at the right time. Ever heard of demand and offer term? I think you are probably another WoW player that had low DKP and while loving the game can't stop crying about the loot then you decided to say "fuck WoW" and now you are here looking for another mmo and can't find one because you are still addicted, what a moron .  Get a life!

I am still playing WoW, almost LvL 70 once i hit LvL 70 I will move onto the next game, will it be Vanguard will it be W40K who knows,

Wow has a Few dynamics that most games don't

Auction House = Guildwars Spams you to death

a Massive world that take a lot of time to explore. = Guildwar not so big even combining all 3 version of the game.

Nothing against Guildwars, let’s face it, it is FREE and you can't beat that!!!!!!

WOW has hundreds of Gear sets = Guilds everyone can look the same.

WoW will die one day that is a fact, just not today. April is the end of my Subscription and i can't wait to try something new.

my point is, WoW has been out longer than most MMO's. I'm sure on it's first day it didn't have the crap it has today. I'm just glad WOW did come out so it can Drive the competition to make something better.

    AH what ever
