Most Popular MMORPG Before WoW

Which MMORPG was the most popular before the release of WoW which took a lot of subscribers, which do you think was the best one before WoW? (To all WoW haters I am not implying WoW is the best out there, just the one with most subscribers)

The most popular in terms of subs? Lineage 2, followed by Lineage...

However I'd say DAoC was the best MMO pre-WoW days.

If I had to guess I'd say Everquest had the most subscribers before WoW, maybe Anarchy Online because it became free, so technically you could say they had more "subscribers" (accounts setup).

In the West, Everquest, though FFXI also did well though with half Asian success. But DAoC, AC, UO, CoH all did well gaining over 100k subscribers.

SWG had a giant popular phase, but most people quit it within their first month cause of all the bugs at launch.

Lineage 1 was a kickass game for its time, I can understand why it was so popular... but Lineage 2, I just don't get it, it's a horrible game... they should have stuck with 2-D and the original playstyle of L1, L2 is the worst 3-D mmo I've ever played.
