I posted some pics on the official forums and thought I'd share them here. Sorry, no action, comedy, monster, or high-level pics. I still haven't gotten over the fantastic environments in between Thorin's Gate and Bree yet. The pics were taken in 1440x900 res with the highest settings available in beta and not the extra high def setting that will be available with the launch version.

Edit: I just noticed that anti-aliasing was off when I took some of the pics so don't mind the jaggies if you can see them.

Funny you should mention that. It is for that reason I was a little apprehensive about playing a dwarven minstrel. He looks a little too fruity for my tastes in that hat and similar light armor. Turning the hat graphic off hadn't crossed my mind till recently. I see dwarves as all being decked out in heavy armor considering their traditional mastery of mining and crafting with metals. Minstrels start out only being able to wear light armor. But around level 15 I gained the option of adding a trait that allows me to wear medium armor. So as soon as I get a better cap, you can be certain I'll be losing the feathers.
I can see what you're talking about regarding the "boxy look." Pretty much whereever you look there is some geographical obstacle in the distance. But I consider it to be far more interesting than level landscape that goes on forever.
I grew up in the Midwest, in southwestern Michigan. We had sand dunes near Lake Michigan, but the land was otherwise flat and dull. Now I live in Washington State. I am surrounded by two mountain chains, one on either side, with Mt. Rainer dominating one horizon and I love it.
My point is that Turbine's environment isn't bad because its mountainous. It's just different. A good portion of the terrain looks exceptionally natural and organic, which is difficult to do while keeping game performance up. And depending on where you stand, the perception of open land versus boxed in land can be quite varied. Yes, Middle-Earth has been scaled down. It doesn't take days in real-time to cross the Shire. Yet as far as game design and representation of Tolkien's world goes, I think Turbine has struck a fine balance.
