Ok... i'll prefice this with the fact that I've played the trial...
I thought the game was fun but was an a crossroads at that point (when I played the trial) on which game to actually play and I read lots and lots of stuff on EVE and determined it would probably take a lot of time to become good enough to compete in the game.
Now don't flame me EVE players because since then i've read lots of stuff that tells about how if u can get a good corp they can make use of you at any level and you can have fun ... maybe ... I've considered giving it another go by suscribing for a month or 2 to test this theory for myself.
Problem is I bought the WoW expansion... im 64 now ... my friends think I should stick it out and get to 70 (SOOO BORED) ... I guess it was fun for those 4 levels but now i'm seriously considering going to something else for at least a while... maybe until AoC comes out. I've been considering SWG because I played that post NGE and regardless of the haters I had a great time playing in the Star Wars universe ...
It's pretty much between EVE and SWG (I already gave CoV another shot and can't get over the boredom while actually playing sad because the concept interests me so much - and the character creation owns but I just cant live with not having fun while playing anymore- it was fun for the first several levels, got flight then was at a loss for what else to do.)
Anyway, can anyone tell me why I should (or should not) choose EVE? Other than you may hate SOE/'I shouldn't choose galaxies'. I'll take the pros/cons for EVE... just not anything about why I shouldn't play SWG please lol.

Ok... but what are the things that I cant really read about that make you love EVE as your game of choice.
I personally love the sci fi genre but I want to know if EVE will be worth it in the long run.

Basically Eve is completely open ended and it is one massive sandbox game.
No restriction on Character Creation or Development, Basically you get out oif the game what you put in.
You have played so we don't need to talk about graphics etc.
Great community although if you get on their wrong side they can cut you out. The only way to get on the wrong side is to lie or smack talk....and a few others.
Ya i'm not like that ... as long as they're friendly and all then i'd be fine.
and ya the graphics were amazing... I had scene videos but was still awed...

i'm certainly not opposed to pvp, but if I get in a 0.0 based corp I know thats more pvp but does that promote me making more or less isk ?

Having 30 million skill points and 3 years experance is not bad but not required to move to 0.0 (unsecured space) and PvP well and have fun. I have a TON of fun doing that even with my main character.
When it comes to money, the loot you get from a couple BS kills is worth more than your ship and all it's fittings. Bring back 1 or 2 juicy T2 items and you can buy a small fleet of frigates and fittings.
Recommend staying clear of 0.0 alliance corps for a good 6 months or so.
Specialize.
ccp the "we cheat for our buddies and are proud of it" company...
Well none of my friends play... but most of them quit WoW and are just playing nothing ATM also... So I'd need corp mates or something to do that with...
and to bawldy... i read a little about the ccp cheating stuff and all that... but I think I would have needed to been personally involved/playing at the time to really have any reason for that to change my mind... I just want to temporary (possibly long term if I enjoy it that much) have some fun...

I've tried WoW, and like you I've just got bored with it, and so have most other people that I know who play it... shame, it had so much potential.
Anyhoo, like I said, try and convince your friends to play.
I know you didn't want to hear this, but, I see you've played SWG pre-NGE... have you played the NGE? There's a trial if you haven't, but be warned, it may make you cry... I know I did.

No no, you misread - I played POST NGE lol... ya... never played pre-nge but I kinda wish I had because it sounded cool. See... the first MMO I played full time was WoW... because before that me and my friends were big time into Diablo 2/LoD ... which is what got us into WoW... Blizzard and all. One friend had played pre-nge SWG and stopped just because none of us played it.
I downloaded the trial and liked SWG (maybe because I never played pre-nge) ... the Star Wars movies are my favorite movies of all time and I just liked being in the universe, but I read what it was like and what it's like now and can understand the SWG Vets anger at the changes... I also think becoming a jedi should be a challenge... not a class selection. I think it should sorta stick with the story... and the current story goes... there is no jedi school until Luke starts it back up... and when he does in the game in an expansion or something is when becoming a jedi should have been easier because u should have been able to join Luke's school and train from the best...
See ... if they had done it right and followed the story that it's fans love it would have been really sweet.

And as said before much lies in the open-endedness. You dont have to be forced to be one thing, and can whenever you want change to something else. And the fact that your skill trains even when online means you dont have to spend months trying to get that character up to a decent level(not that levels exist in EVE as it does in more mundane mmorpgs like WoW).
Also another thing I found much more fun in EVE than in for example DAoC and WoW amongst others is that you lose (most of the time) everything you have on the ship(+the ship) when it gets lost. To compensate you dont have that über-equippment of full rare stuff or something(you can though). And the fact that you do die when you die. It aids the game and makes it feel more real since there's backgroundstories concerning most of the stuff implimented in EVE(even the personal conversations!).
Alright, perhaps I should not just go about saying EVE is the greatest game ever. There are down-sides. Because despite it having an exiting and sometimes large-scaled pvp-system and capabilities, lag does kick in when the fleet battles get up to a few hundred combatants(I've been in fleet battles with as many as 1500 involved and in the same system. It ended up with node-crashes...).
But that does not happen that often. Most major pvp battles consist of perhaps 50-200 fighting.
Ah, but a personal memory of mine that I found actually almost made me quit EVE. Is that fact that the beginning is tedious and can quickly get boring. You're most often stuck in safe space(Empire so called) and relies on low-leveled missions. Sure, as always you need to climb from the bottom up, but it's not until you get out into 0.0 and into the dangerous places that the fun starts. The rewards are grand and the dangers just as many. Which is why a guideline I've heard is that you should try to get into a 0.0-corporation when you've grown tired with Empire-life(perhaps a month or two into the game), so that you can learn the basics in safety and then get out into the real space.
All in all, it has its ups and downs, but requires only as much time as you are willing to give it, as you're character does get better even when you're not playing. The boring parts include - according to me - being stuck without friends in Empire at the beginning and the fact that it gets more fun as you gain skillpoints and can fly a variety of ships. But you have to learn how to crawl before you learn how to walk I guess.
