HI, i have been following AoC for quite some time. My system is a 3.2ghz P4, 2gig ddr ram, 256mb AGP Gforce 7800gs.. I am worried that my system will not be able to run AoC upon release. This saddens me, becuase games like Guild wars or Eve online, have remarkable graphics, but can run on generally low end machines... any advice?

Umm you don't have a low end machine...its not high end but its definitly not low end, in my opinion your probably like High Mid end system! Alot of the pictures that float around you have to remember are them touting Vista and Direct x 10 which if you have XP won't matter since you'll be running the Direct X 9 version which looks visually different. Great but different.
I think your concerns are ill concieved or at the least a bit jumping the gun unless you have some low end parts in there that might jam up the bus as to speak.
IF you crazily get Vista i'd add another bar of ram if your computer can handle it since Vista itself eats up almost a gig.
lord i had to edit twice my typos know no ends!
Please Refer to Doom Cat with all conspiracies & evil corporation complaints. He'll give you the simple explination of..WE"RE ALL DOOMED!
As the poster said above your system is decent and should be ok.. However if you want alittle more of a boost out of it might I suggest you try overclocking your CPU (depends on what type of processor or Mother board you have) Ram (Depends on what type of Ram or MB you have) and your Video Card.
The Interweb is full of helpful info on how to overclock.

AO's graphics engine is old as freaking hell, everyone knows that but for some reason don't take it into account. The game is incompatible with today's high end graphics cards, resulting in client side lag as your computer tries to process the graphical information. The recent updates have helped, but not wholly solved the problem.

The recent updates have helped, but not wholly solved the problem. I'll have to disagree with that. I played AO a long time ago on a comp that was above their minimum requirements but wasn't a gaming rig, and it lagged like hell even then. I played later with a better computer thinking that the lag would be better, and it was about the same. It's not graphical lag. It's client-server lag. From what I've been told by people that know more than me, the game just has poorly written netcode, and is very inefficient.
I'm not saying what you're saying is completely false, but I don't think it matters what machine you're on. You're always going to experience huge amounts of lag. The places that I got lag the most sometimes were out in the wilderness with no one around. And this is with a Dorm room internet connection that was T3 or better.
I do hope they fix that lag, because with the graphics shown, if you add graphical lag to client-server lag, you're going to be watching a slide show.

I think Funcom realises not everyone has available to them a high-end system or the funds (even between now and October) to get a new high-end system. Thus, in the alpha and beta stages of testing, I believe the devs will work from the top-down to optimise the game for those with older machines.
We've been told by the devs the game will be highly customisable on the graphical end, so really, no one should be too worried that AoC is going to be completely unplayable on their current system.
However, if you can afford even minor upgrades to your system, just to be on the safe side, do it, but just to be certain.
I'm sure Funcom will make an official announcement regarding AoC's system requirements in the very near future.
Not sure when this was said, but Aelfinn knows this game like the back of his hand and he says in the "system requirements?" thread:
"At last report...
"roughly 3 ghz P4 (or equivalent), ATI 9800 / NVidia 5700 and around 1 gig memory"
Windows Vista and its accopanying system Direct X 10 will be needed to bring out the absolute best performance, particularly graphics wise, but the thing will run just fine on XP and DX9"
And I'm almost guaranteeing that's the minimum. Almost all games, especially MMOs recommend more RAM than that. 1 gig will be the minimum you'll need.

Your concerns are very valid I too am a long time AO player and at the time that I played AO I had a great rig but in big PVP tower battles I (or I should say we since everyone around me was complaining )lagged like a bitch...
Thats one of the problems I have with AOC since they will be using the same game engine (just an updated version of it) that AO used.. I think this is a horrible mistake, but only time will tell I guess. But I think they should have went with the Unreal Engine or something simular.
On a side note if your looking into cases give Newegg a shot if you haven't already or you might even want to try a custom Rig case site they have some bad boys on those sites as well, just be prepared to pay for it.

I wouldn't call that an official announcement though; it's an estimation, so don't treat it as gospel just yet.
Keep in mind also those specifications were cited midway through last year, so quite a lot could have changed between now and then.
When Funcom put it in a Press Release, you can then treat it as gospel.
i also played the open beta and initial release of AO with a high end system and the lag freezing was what made me quit. After a year the game would still OFTEN freeze for several seconds in various locations due solely to their / or their server farm's net code.
It's bad enough in a game where combat is point and click but in a Real Time Combat game it is Fatal.
There's simply no excuse these days for dropped or delayed or jammed up packets.
