As far as tweedle dee said ummm LOTRO is as generic as WoW , Vanguard and EQII. Only a lombotized lab rat believes that LOTRO is any different than those games. Nothing new here just a different IP with the same ideas and some polish
You are right , nothing new is in this title. But what you faling to see is , that what is has is very well polished and terrific game play. No one in the Development of this title said " this is a completely new revolutionary game " They really haven't said anything to make me feel like I am getting ripped off. The beauty of this game is it's honesty and straight forwardness. That is shown in side the game world and it also reflexes Turbine as a whole. Straight forward , and no bull shit.
So yes , there is nothing new, but it is done well, and above the AAA status .
Let me babble :
We all started on the " new innovation" kick when . I know, When Vangaurd was being Developed. All this talk of new new , never done before, completely revolutions, was all spewing out of one mouth. We all bit into it and for the last 5 years we all layed judgement on every title created saying : I will wait for Vanguard, cause this game has nothing new." Don't lie , we all said it at least one time in the past 5 years, well guess what , Vangaurd is released , and it bombed. So why not fall back on something that has what we know and are used to . A lot of games we keep saying the same crap over and over " Nothing new and innovative , i will wait for , blah blah" Well i for one am tired of waiting , I found a great game that fits my game play and I am going for it. Why waste more time waiting on something that can devistate me again like Vanguard did.
Vangaurd did more to me at least and maybe to a lot of people ,create this false sense of waiting , and now we are so used to , half of you will never pick anything cause you will go back to the " I will wait till.."
I'm done waiting , I am going to help middle earth in the struggle of the century !

Damn that is a good post. That sums up my feelings about so many games (not just MMO's) over the years. I agree that passing up solid games because they dont completely reinvent a genre is just bashing your head against a brick wall. Personally I like VG, but this isn't a war about what we do or dont like. You make an excellent point about expectations, and I really appreciate your opinion.
lol, rip yourself back to Vanguard / WoW or w/e generic mmorpg you currently play. Dont say our last rites, this game is great and will become greater. so w/e to your lvl3 post. Now on topic, very good patch.
Are you a 10 year old who has to flame a poster because he has a different opinion than you? People have different views on things, thats why there are so many games. Learn to accept other's views with out being defensive about something you may like.
I flame that poster because I do not appreciate he’s conceit. if your view is different then mine, I could care less… all it means is your wrong.
Now lets get to the bottom line here. The bottom line, is that Lotro was on EZ mode before, and this patch just put it on normal mode. Boohooo, guess what, the community will be better for it. If the game has a little bit of challenge all that does is filter out the teenage wow players, and is that so bad?
hate to break it to you but after playing around with several characters seems as if this is just a light armor over adjustment. My Hunter and Guardian are having no issues otherr than repairs are overpriced which are being hot fixed tommorrow. I was just with a guildie did some experiments with his lvl 20 minstrel and can still solo yellows and oranges also. SO it is just a light armor adjustment issue. I can guaranteee you they wil not go into open beta with one of the classes completly broke and a second class half broke, this isn't SOE we are dealing with.
Break what to me dog? Im happy with this game, no matter what they do. EVERYTHING turbine has done for this game, has been good for its health. I speak from both sides of the fence here, yeah im a hardcore gamer but guess what, most of my friends are not... Do i wana see my friends leave? heck no, so if this doesnt make the game harder, im all for it. But if they choose to increase the curve a bit, i dont hate them for doing it, because i can understand why they would. In other words everyone.
THERE IS NOTHING TO SEE HERE. get back to testing (sht , i would BUT IM AT WORK!)
Really. well good for you dude because that makes you part of the 3% that think the patch was a good thing doesn't it? That is according to the poll on the beta forums. Lets se 181 testrers responded and it stands at 47 % says it is awful, 27% thinks it needs work, 14 % undecided, 9% think it needs minor tweaking, and 3 percent love it. So lets see if Turbine is arrogant and stubborn and pulls a Sigil/ SOE or if they are smart enough to admit they screwed up. One look at the beta forums topics pretty much back up the poll. Right now I have went from a for sure lifetime account pre order to where I doubt I will ever pick up my retail box. Thank God I just had a ten dollar bill into this game at Best Buy, and they did this pre launch. I would not reccomend this game to anyone right now, fanboy to slam boy in one patch unless they get thier stuff together fast.
I'm not sure I am seeing what is being complained about. I'm not big into crafting so my expenses are pretty minimal and I dont use healing potions to mitigate downtime so I save a few silver there. But my main is a level 17 caster and I have about 900 silver on me and keep my gear fully repaired and play to my limits all the time. I die all the time. So it's not like I dont spend money on repair. I played about 4 hours today and I saw that they drastically decreased the value of sellables. But I am not too worried about it. For me it just means I have to make sure that I really want whatever it is that I spend my money on.

Armor values cut in half, morale( health) cut in half, power cut in half, healing spells cut by 50%, less skills overall, repair costs increased by a factor of 20 or or more, drops and reward quests cut by 500% or more...ummmm is that enough or should I go on? Made a new toon ran him up to level 6 inthe newbie instance, he left with a whopping 50 copper to his name after buying his skills which are not half as good as they were pre patch.
The LOTRO game servers will be brought down on Friday, March 9th from 1:00PM - 4:00PM EST for a hotfix. In the interim, your play experience may be negatively impacted by exaggerated item repair costs and other economy-related and graphical issues.
The hotfix will make the following changes:
* Item repair costs will be adjusted downward!
* If you were encountering terrain seams that cause your screen to go black, after the patch the area should load if you wait a few moments. More fixes to address this issue will be forthcoming in a future patch.
* Players should no longer encounter a "System.ArgumentException" error when trying to launch the game.

To wyzwun: Shut the hell up if you can't contribute something relevant to the conversation. It's assholes like you that make normal people not want to post for fear of being flamed. Sorry too everyone else but I felt like that needed to be said.
it needed a little tap to the right and they pulled out a sledge hammer in my opinion. The way it is now I will never pick up my retail box unless they move things back to pretty close to where they were before. Other wise the Vanguard players can claim it as their new home as far as I am concerned. The fun factor went from a solid 10 down to around a 4 for me. I will continue to log in and test it each day but If my minstrel cannot solo 2 regular blues by release I won't be buying it. I don't want to solo two yellows but it would be nice to be able to solo one at least, and have a small chance with a solo orange.
Yo Jack
Now you worry me
You were no1 LOTRO fanboy. And now you are pulling out big guns on it.
I really smell something gone wrong if you changed your mind by 180 degree ?!
Please, tell me i am not right and the game will be good!
I am sick of playing WOW
And by the way. Wouldnt the harder monsters encourage GROUPING ? I heared LOTRO is bit to SOLO friendly ?
"Before this battle is over all the world will know that few...stood against many." - King Leonidas
I must admit, my two major complaints with LoTRO (and I really do like this game), is that it seemed to bleed money, and progression felt like a hacked WOW server set to easy. I was betting that this would be adjusted, during a beta you want folks to level pretty quickly, so they test more of the game, more of their class abilities, etc.
I don't want a boring "grind a million mobs to gain a level game", but I don't want a game where the progression is so easy I feel like I am playing a game for 5 year olds. I also don't want a game where I have to scrimp and save to purchase my class abilities either (Why not just smoke weed all day, rather than risk your life adventuring? I like to play heroes, not serfs), but I don't want hyperinflation either, those gold coins get heavy.
I like the concept of MMORPG's for the epic journey (when playing single player RPGs I often thought, how cool would it be if there were other folks playing this game with me) unfortunately we seem to get boring grinders, and it just seems to be how long they want you to grind for, that makes a game WOW or Vanguard. Give me fun, fun, fun content, I don't care what level I am, the level to me is a mathematically simple but boring measure of progression that MMORPG's tend to make the be all and all of the game. Making content takes brain, the kill this mob for 5xp, only another 9,995 to go, does not.
Some over-reaction and exaggeration above. I'd guess that the repair costs was a missed decimal, and they cost 10X too much. I don't know what the skill cost error is, and if it will be in today's patch, but it is high by at least a factor of two. These figures are based on a level 14 Hunter.
I did not notice a big difference after the patch in combat ability. Some, but mild. Armor values were cut about 25%; my 38 cloak --->28. I can still handle two blues, but it is closer than previously. At level 14, I had >400 Silver; clearly far more than I needed. Some adjustment was perfectly justified. The goal will be for players to be able to save enough as they progress to buy horses, plots, buildings, fluff. Part of the reason for the changes we've seen is to gather data not only on how much money is in the game, but how various economic factors affect each other. What happens if you increase the cost of craft supplies/tools? An MMO economy is tricky, and usually not done very well; EVE is best at it, and they work very hard to track and correlate trends.
I played VGSoH in beta, and for a while after release (until admitted into LotRO beta). As a result I'm very sensitive to a group of devs not listening to all their players, and are resisting any suggestions that they modify their "vision". And even more sensitive to any nonsense about "grind = challenge", or "tedium = accomplishment". I can honestly say that I have not detected any of those attitudes in LotRO. Someone put together a post with links to all (?) dev after-patch posts; there were about 30, from many devs in many threads. All the dev posts were reasonable, open-minded, and candid. Some were "oof, we goofed", some were "we did this for these reasons, and will continue to monitor to see if we got it right". Best dev communications I've seen, with the possible exception of EVE.
Part of the beta testers' function is to act as a focus group. That this group did! One of the devs apologized for not listening closely, as he expected some complaints from the economic changes... so he delayed looking into the matter. How long was this terrible delay? Less than six hours! I've seen devs who thought they were being responsive if they looked into something like that in six weeks! And he apologized, and mentioned the vigorous intervention of the community manager who "assisted" him in focussing.
So for me, in the end, the whole episode turned out to be oddly reassuring. Mistakes were made (and they always are in software development programs of this size and complexity), acknowledged, and will be quickly corrected. Experiments were acknowledged as such, and will be monitored. Hard to ask for more.

dunno bubba, I am still testing trying to figure out something weird. Might just be a pre patch character that is screwed, releveling now and should find the problem area later tonight . They are hot fixing some issues and other issues are minor tweaks. Still I loved the game pre patch and think they used a hand grenade to kill a mouse and managed to piss off a good many of the testers . As far as the grouping you can group all you want the game is not group unfriendly, just that it is not mandatory most of the time. They need to figure out a way to up drops fro groups to promote grouping, not penalize solo play. Positive re enforcement is the way to go for that, not punishing the soloers.

Very good post. Sums up pretty much how I've viewed the matter. Add to that my past positive experiences with Turbine in AC1 and my 2 lifetime subscriptions are still lined up.

IDK why it matters how much copper you had at lvl6... As it stands, if the orginal game was released, the econ would be broken within a month or less...
This is not directed at you, but frankly i really cant stand it when people bish about content... when they just run through stuff. Now all of a sudden, you have to spend more time within certain areas of the game... whats wrong with that? the world is amazing, now you gota kill a few more pelts to make that leather armor... big deal. imo w/o makes you stay longer in certain areas is a good thing.
Like i said, i really am in the middle on this. I really dont care. There are so many more issues to slam a game about... I guess, jack is your issue that now you feel like, youll have to spend more time during the character development? that its less casual friendly?
I actually like your posts jack, i think your one of the few smart people in this whole board. I can understand all your issues with Vanguard and dnl... but maybe i dont get this one. Weve all been cheated by games like dnl and vanguard, for once we have a great game... and something this small, is enough to make you take a 180?
Well the hot fix cured all of my complaints. I took on a dark blue and a white and it was a real close battle, took on a yellow and won but it was a battle and if teh mob had pulled a stun I might have lost, a orange would be extremely close even without a stun on the mobs part. I play these games to feel like a hero, not a wimp and last night that was what I felt like playing. I also like loot and rewards and they have jacked that back up while leaving most of the money sinks in. In other words the fun factor is back.

wow, had no idea this was going on
i did purchase the preorder mainly to get the good deal on the monthly fee in case i decide to play (completely hooked on EQ2 after trying it out after the vanguard disaster)
i'm in beta after being invited post stress-test but haven't played - doesn't look good right now for the retail box

well if you read my last post you would see that most of those issues were fixed, they tweaked too much and after getting their tail feathers singed by the testers have backed off to a happy medium with todays hot fix. Now the game is more challenging but not to the Vanguard extreme. Sort of halfway between Vanguard and WoW in my opinion. So much for the people who say that Turbine never listens, seems as if they heard the player base loud and clear to me. GO ahead and make room for that retail box on your shelf because the fun factor is not only back but with the new challenge it is even better than before.

Im usually not one to call out for nerfs... but after reading all of this... it is clear to me.
Jackdog needs to be "balanced" heck, he needs to be NGE'ED! he holds far to much power! everyone, kill him now!
Any thoughts on the patch, I for one am glad to see they added the weight so the curve is not like WoW . I think it will be pulling some more people while exporting the weaker players back to WoW.
Some things will be worked out to get the medium but for the most part I am pleased with the patch.
As for people saying "the game is to easy" might want to log back in and reroll and give the new patch a go.
It's not "that" much harder, but in any case I think it's going to revert back to close to what it was. The thing people have to remember is that the "average" mob, normal quests and the like, can be easy, very even. The challenge should exist in the epic or group quests, dungeons and boss npcs. Thats the proper way to appeal to all without alienating anyone.
Turbine has no intention of making the mistakes Vanguard did nor do they intend to "export" players back to WoW. It has far too much potential for that to happen.

I go back and forth on how I feel about this patch. I felt a little boost in dificulty was needed. From what I can tell myself and from others, it appears the boost was too big.
But of course, it is BETA. Things can change dramatically at any time. There's a lot of changes that can still happen, and they could be very good.
One thing that keeps me quite hopeful that the game will come to a good medium is a post I read on here. A developer was talking about how they'd rather take more away from the player and give back ( to at least make the nerf not seem as bad), than be like other games famous for nerfing.. and that is take some, then some more and keep doing it. I've left many a game because of nerfs. There's nothing I hate more than spending three or six months developing a character only to log in one day and find you're playing a completely different one. I want to have a sense of accomplishment in a game and I don't want to feel like I have to work doing it or feel penalized because I'm not as hardcore as others. With LOTRO, I have a great sense of accomplishmentt... great fellowships and community when I want, and feeling self sufficient too.

I hope they keep it that way.
I think that approach would be better... If you started with no money in your acount and I deposited 50 cents a day up until you had a total of $5.00, your perception of the deal would be quite different to if I gave you $10.00 and took away 50 cents a day until a total of $5.00 was reached.
lol, rip yourself back to Vanguard / WoW or w/e generic mmorpg you currently play. Dont say our last rites, this game is great and will become greater. so w/e to your lvl3 post. Now on topic, very good patch.

Really. well good for you dude because that makes you part of the 3% that think the patch was a good thing doesn't it?

It DID make combat a bit harder, not a great deal, but there was a change.
Money harder to get - like another poster said, make sure you really want it before you buy it.
I like no more easy mode. If you challenge an orange, you may get beat - great fun to me !
and the bugs are getting fixed. so I wish the whining would stop.
It's still in beta people... even though it's better than a lot of released games.
I think that's what put people up in arms when changes are made. they forget the beta part.

Weve all been cheated by games like dnl and vanguard, for once we have a great game... and something this small, is enough to make you take a 180?

i did purchase the preorder mainly to get the good deal on the monthly fee in case i decide to play (completely hooked on EQ2 after trying it out after the vanguard disaster)
i'm in beta after being invited post stress-test but haven't played - doesn't look good right now for the retail box

well if you read my last post you would see that most of those issues were fixed, they tweaked too much and after getting their tail feathers singed by the testers have backed off to a happy medium with todays hot fix.
