I am feeling the urge to pick up an MMO right now, and this certainly seems like a good chance. I have played Guild Wars and WoW in the past. WoW's world didn't interest me much, and I got out of it really quickly. I liked having characters that can jump and stuff, but perhaps the fact that during the low levels my server was empty just gave me a bad first impression.
I see that there are plenty of awaited MMO's out right now, and I want to know your opinion. Do you think this game will endure? Will it still have a good fanbase 3 years from now?
I also would like to know some exact details on release. EBgames.com claims it is released 4/24/07. I would conisder going with the $199 lifetime option if I got into this.
The graphics are amazing, I love LOTR, this game looks good. What do you think makes this game unique?
Comments
I was really looking forward to this game, even managed to get a beta key for the game. Unfortunaty I was completly disapointed.
Likening LOTRO to wow in my opinion does WOW a great injustice. The game is more like DDO in a number of ways than WOW, certainly the graphics and general UI feel remind me more of DDO than wow. The thing this game really failed to generate for me was any kind of atmospere. Yes it has all the parts that make a good game as have wow and EQ2 to pick two but somehow the parts dont meld together to make a good game. I would if I were honest say that DDO is a better game, simply because the quests in DDO are much more interesting and the dungeons I have visited in LOTRO seemed bland and ill conceived (unlike the ones in DDO).
To me the only thing that makes this game unique at the moment is the fact that it is based on one of the best fantasy novels ever written. I really hope I am proven wrong and this game becomes something great but from what I have seen, I cannot see that happening.
Some people dislike it but the majority like it.
I really don't care if it's innovative or not.
As long as it's fun to play i will be there.
I bought the EU collectors edition for 317$
That's how much i like it
But give the open beta a try and see if you likeit.
There is plenty of others games out there if you don't like it.
It's just a game nothing else.

You may or may not like it, depend on your playing style. If you like PVP, awesome raid encounters, great crafting, cool gear, this game isn't for you.

Its so odd really, for me running through the Shire in particular really makes me feel like part of the LoTR universe. Last evening I was passing through Michael Delving and ran across an elf working hard to play his Lute. He had a bit of talent and was actually strumming out a pretty good tune.
I began clapping as we sat under the evening stars and I really felt part of the world. Later I joined my guild for a mass romp around Bree (about 50 of us there) which ended up in the Prancing Pony where everyone sat down for some conversation, emotes and pipeweed smoking.
I haven't felt this immersed in a game world in a long time (my first go around in DAOC probably was the last)
So, your experience may vary.... best to join the open beta at month's end and see for yourself...

What's to prove? It's my opinion. I played the BETA. The game blows. The monster PVP sucks. It's for carebears who don't like to get ganked. Why on earth would I want to play a pre-made level 50 monster and fight another persons pre-made level 50 monster? Whats the fun in that? Monster PVP is nothing more that PVE with pre-made toons that you quest with and yeah....fight each other. (yawn) It may suit your needs. I hope it does. This is nothing but my opinion. The movies and books where good, but this game....I won't be wasting money on it.I already have LOTRO as a lifetimeaccount and then i can have some PvP fun in one of the others.
AS far as burying LOTRO i think you're wrong.
I wouldn't be surprised if this game sells in more than 1 million copies within the first 2 months after release.
I really don't care who sells most copies.
As long as the games i play are fun it's enough for me.

heres an actuall attempt to answer your question based on your post, not some opinionated crap flaming on and on...
the 2 games you listed Guild wars and WOW make me think that this game would most definately be for you!!! I feel the world of LOTRO is more interesting then the WoW world (befor anyone gets their panties in a bundle, realize that the OP already said that WoWs world didnt interest them much) and its most definately more fun to play in than the instance heavy world that guildwars provides. every part of this game has been interesting and fun for me. I truelly believe that this will be an mmo that will stand the test of times. common sense if you ask me. the name alone will sell sell sell this title and the gameplay will keep lotsa fans dedicated to its future. very well done game and absolutely the MOST POLISHED beta I have ever had the fortune to be a part of.
monster play is just one element that makes this game unique. a very very fun way to take on pvp. rewarding in many different aspects. I think the quest system makes it pretty unique as well. real quests with a real quest feel. absolutely riveting storylines make you really feel like you are a part of the quests as well. grinding is also an option and exploration is always available.
highly recommended based on the games you already play
I miss DAoC
The open beta/trial is a good idea. If you want warm and cozy, start a hobbit. The Shire is great. Next up is elf, more forbidding beginning area, very pretty initial mainland area. Not sure about dwarves and men, haven't played one of them.
I'm sure the game will endure. Preorder sales are very high. And beta testers tend to be buyers, as was not the case in VG, which lost a lot of beta players.
Also, because you'd be in at the beginning, I think it's a safe guarantee that you'll have a LOT of players at your level.
If you do decide to take a chance and preorder, "preorder open" beta starts a week earlier than fully open beta. Open beta characters will be capped at level 15, and will transfer to the release game.

It's your pre-made level 50 monster against another person's main free people's character that they have leveled up. Are you sure you played the beta and can comment that the monster PVP sucks?

You aren't wrong, Red. The other poster, in his effort to be witty and bash LOTRO is perversly hacking up the facts in how systems actually work and is instead presenting his opinionated misinformation as fact. He is also conveniently leaving out parts about Monster Play to "make his point". Sure, you start at level 50, and then through actually playing Monster Play (you don't fight other Monster characters, you fight level 40+ Player characters that come into the Ettenmoors or you quest against the NPC Free Peoples living in the Ettenmoors) you gain Destiny Points that allow you to upgrade your Monster Char. I mean, if you hear the word "carebear" come out of someone's mouth, just stop listening at that point.

Who in their right mind would want to be ganked? No one, so I guess that makes everyone who plays an MMO a carebear by your description. Also, just by saying the word carebear like you did lets everyone know that you are a griefer/ganker who loves nothing more than ruining a game for those at a lower level than they are. Grow up.

I am going to purchase a lifetime sub, that way if something new comes along that tickles my fancy I don't have to worry and can always return to the wonderful world of middle-earth whenever the hell I want.
For those of you that think WAR and AoC are going to bury this game, you may want to rethink. This game has alot of potential (not vanguard potential ), we don't know what kind of direction this game will take, but it could take any direction. Whatever direction it takes will be a good one I am willing to bet on that.

I'm evaluating LoTRO right now... so far I'm a bit underwhelmed but I need to play more to get a total picture. There are some interesting elements but then the total package is just lacking for me after WoW. The country just seems so bland and lifeless in comparison. The PvP concept doesn't get me excited. I much prefer the many options in WoW (town raids in the real world, battlegrounds, and arena). And it is with my regular characters who can benefit greatly from the PvP honor. I find much less problems questing in WoW--even in the noob areas which can be crowded. Now I will qualify that any new game/expansion will have its issues with crowding so this must be taken into account as all new toons will try and do the same content until there is a gap in advanced/less-advanced.
So anyway, I know the WoW mythology/world-story may not be your cup of tea but I'd really try and give the game a good chance. At the minimum you'll get a good yardstick to measure LoTRO and others up too...

"Don't try to experience everything all at once... maximize your MMO value by enjoying the ride to the highest level."
I just never could get past the Warcraft World myself. The adventure side was only so so and the crafing was horrible. I played it from release till for about 20 days and went back to EQII. LoTRO in my opinion has much prettier graphics, the character building is much deeper with the trait system, The PvP rocks because ganking is darn near impossible, the crafting is a lot deeper and there is a ton more room and tools for RP.
But no shoe fits every foot, people need to try it in the open beta and decide for themselves.
I miss DAoC
This is how I see LOTRO. The biggest selling point for this game IMO is that it makes me feel like I'm really in Middle-earth. Period! It may not be the most innovative or cutting edge game but it is a fun, solid, well polished game. It may not be for everyone but again no game is. If you enjoy it then play the hell out of it. If not, good luck in finding a game that suits you. If you're still on the fence, try it in the open beta. There is still about 5 or 6 weeks until it goes live and it may change enough to your likeing.
Live long and prosper
