This is 3rd gen? I am afraid not. It simply is not.
Talk about chopping wood; In UO people used to make a living chopping wood, making it into bows or furniture, and selling it to players who would set it up in their housing.
Yep, and in Vanguard we can also craft bows, arrows, and so much more, ... , but we can also buy land plots and carpenters can build houses on them (this will grow to become player run cities), we can craft boats, they sell for some nice couple golds. Most of the furniture is not in game yet but coming soon.
And yes, crafters are making a living with their skills. Hell, crafting is even one of the 3 spheres so it can live on its own.
Want to buy some weak tanglewood logs off me?
Seriously though... maybe VG is "not for me", though as you can tell from my first post I want to like it, and am not giving up yet.
I may have had an unlucky first instance, or whatever you call this teleport set-up where someone is locked out after dying... but it was just the sense of "nothing new here" that prompted my second post.
I was promised 'Wow' moments from the get-go. I specifically read an interview which said I should be getting fun stuff very early on.
Great I think, why should I have to do boring stuff for hours to get good stuff? I have better things to do with my life. and better games to play. Why can't I have good stuff, right form the beginning, but stuff that changes and advances all the way through? Again, maybe this means VG is not for me, but guess what - I buy a game, I want to have fun with it out of the box.
Lets take an analogy... real-time strategy. The real truth is, this genre is all rather similar in game mechanics. Collect resources, build, deploy, destroy.
But guess what, when I installed and started playing Company of Heroes I went WOW! Out of the box. Sure, my better units don't come till later, but right from moment one this was fun!
Similarly, non-MMO RPGs had also been rather similar for a while. But when I started playing Oblivion I was thrilled... RIGHT OUT THE BOX. First person shooters... I could go on. There are games which blow you away, because even though a riff on a familiar theme, they bring something new and exciting immediately... and leave plenty of room for growth and discovery at the same time.
Vanguard... I install, and think to myself.. hmm... okay, nice enough. The trees are swaying in the wind - nice... the wood elf city - very pretty. The mobs? Meh.. The NPCs? Hmm... The card game? Fresh, though I run around a lot on circles it seems.... And after a very few days I am thinking... hmm... when do I get my first - Holy *** What a cool sight/effect/experience/plot/feature
So I throw back the challenge. To those of you who love this game, when did you first get that feeling? Tell me, because I will go there and check it out myself. I paid for this game, I want to enjoy it!
PS - none of this is about bugs/performance; that will sort itself out. This is about content/gameplay
I have to agree with the OP as far as the "Been there done that" feel of the game...
Sure, Vanguard's purpose has always been to take the best from all the current and past mmorpgs and put it together into one huge world. Brad always said the game was about bringing more of what so many people enjoyed so much and wanted more of than different game play.
As far as soloing goes, it all depends on which class you pick... Im a 36 Monk and im having problems with that also. Although this last patch seem to help some, I can now take on dot 2 mobs that are below my level, before it was hit and miss. There's no way I can take on a 3 dot mob even if its 5-6 levels below me.
I'm still thinking about canceling my account... Just to many frustrating things about the game play that make you want to quit...
For example, Monks have 1 heal skill, it heals for about 30% of your health but has a 5 min. timer on it.. Ok i can live with this, but everytime I kill a 2 dot mob I have to sit down and wait for my health to regen which takes about 5 mins, even if I eat food (thats for level 30+ toons) it still takes a good 3 mins. So everytime I kill something I have to sit down and wait 3 mins before attacking again. This is just stupid, what purpose does this serve? Its not like I can eat during combat to make myself heal faster, so why can't the healing effects of food be faster since I have to be out of combat in order to use it anyways? It's stuff like this that makes me want to cancel.
I assume you know how to play your class and you have always maxed your weapons/gear/jewelry out with fighting nameds (yes some questing oriented people don't like to go drop some good gear), crafting and browsing the broker.
I play a rogue. My class was very bad up to last week, but I have never seen the problems you are talking about (never played a monk). Regen takes max 10-15 seconds. I have never needed any food for healing.
The rogues just got their major overhaul, the monks should get it very soon; so there is some light there for you
After the overhaul I can now solo 1 to 2 2 dot mobs. A 3 dot mob if it is 2 levels lower than me. But 3 dot mobs are meant for a small group anyway, you are not supposed to solo them.
If I was so frustrated with my class as you seem to be, I would not level to lvl36. I would play another class. Or team up with a healer
Another example, lack of Transporters, why make someone travel 30 mins across land to get to there group? Im not saying there should be transporters inland, but put more harbors around the outside of the islands so we can atleast get from one side of the map to the other without havnig to spend 40% of our gameplay time trying to get there...
To resolve this problem the game gets caravans and fellowships. Fellowships were there, but removed during beta). Both should be in game soon once the major bug fixing is done. Sigil is also investigating some more kinds of teleporting means.
Static NPC's, makes the game world feel dead. I know on some of the dungeons for higher level players they actually have a few npc guards that patrol around which is step in the right diretion, but this is more of the exception then the rule.
Yes, life is still missing. Let them fix the bugs first, it is coming.
Lack of Banks, Brokers and mailbox's not to mention the the lack of some trainers: I can find Cleric trainers everywhere but for some reason the Dev's like to the hide the Monk trainers. Every sizeable camp, city and castle should have these items in them, Im tried of having to ride 20 mins to find a mailbox to see what mail i got. Or spend over an 1hr looking through cities just to find out they don't have the trainer I need, true you can talk to guards to get directins, but a lot of the guards are bugged and wont tell you anything. Bottom line if you have a area with trainers, the area should contain all of them and not just a few select ones..
I play a rogue, never had any trouble with finding these things. The travel is no problem to me, it adds to immersion.
Another problem I see in the future is with the crafting classes, sure there goods are wanted now but once everyone gets epic armor and weapons crafting is going to be useless wtihout decay. I could see a system where once your items hit 0 condition you could repair it up to 5 times before it breaks permenatly and you need more gear, without this there really is no point to crafting.
With all the future plans Brad is posting all over I don't think we will come to a point something like crafting will be useless.
Even you are suggesting some ways to fix such an eventual situation, like dacay for example. As you say, several things can be done at any time to fix such an eventual problem... so I see no problem here.

Of course you see no problem. None of the Vanbois ever see a problem. That was why nothing got fixed in beta, and why the game is the mess it is now.

sorry for you if you feel the need to be calling names. You must also be very frustrated if you need to make up eventual future problems that don't even exist but can be fixed easily in the eventuality they would arise.
I am browsing several forums daily but I have never seen anyone posting about major problems with crafting. I have however seen many people spending so much time feeling the need to be spamming FUD about a game they haven't even played (proof is here again a few posts above regarding no living for crafters, no houses, no boats for crafting etc...). It seems some don't have anything else to do with their lives (no other better game to play ? ) if they need to spend their time FUDing in such a way.
Yes there are problems with this game, it was released too early. But there is a world between the real problems and the FUD.
Crafting is fine for so many people all over, so what problems are you talking about ???
Yes I know how to play my Monk character, its a great toon for Groups, but solo it stinks... Most of my complaints don't become apparent until after level 20, then they become worse and worse... my AC is 1100 and my weapon does 90-110 damage, I think DPS is around 38 DPS... The Monks DPS Is fine, but the healing situation is a major flaw with the class as far as soloing goes. If I remember right, ranger has healing abilities to make themselves heal faster, no? Healing is painfully slow with Monks and being were approaching 2 months into the game there is no excuse for it, especially if they want to keep subscribers... If they didnt have a class ready for when the game shipped then they should of never put that class in the game until it was ready.
As far as the promises from brad goes, thats all they are is promises, there is no guarantee any of the stuff he says will actually make it to the game.... For the first 1.5 months I was fan of the game and tried to look at the bright side of things, but my patience is running thin...
I guess i've played to many MMO's and playing another MMO that has the same play mechanics is starting to bore me... Even the quests are the same boring generic kill quests... How about a quest that tells you to go to a castle to help them defend against a invasion, once there you would fight side by side with npc's and other players in the group... then maybe the 2nd part of the quest would be for you to push the fight towards the enemies castle and the final part taking over there castle... Now this would be fun and I could see sinking 10-15 hrs into doing this story arc style quest... But instead its the same old stuff
Guess im getting to the point that im just not willing to accept the same old MMO, Im tired of eating rice and want some meat and potatos
I think once enough MMO's fail, developers will abandoned the current MMO template and come up with some new stuff...
With everything I said above, the game is not terrible, I just think more MMO's players are not willing to keep playing a game which is basically the same as the one they just left... Given Vanguard has more depth then other MMO's but its still basically the same..

Yes the monk is a little doomy at the moment. The rogue was up to last week, but now it is starting to be a great class. Rangers were way to strong and after the nerf many are now complaining. The devs said Monks and Rangers will get attention very soon once they are finished with the rogues (almost done).
Check the monk forums on tentonhammer for your community and some info. The monk class lead (the one who pushes the player issues to the devs) also posts there.

Now, regarding the game, I understand your feelings. Maybe you should take a break and check back in a few months if you feel like it.
This brings up another question, how come Sigil does not have offical forums for the different classes? I have a feeling Brad knew this game was going out to soon and decided not to have offical forums so he wouldnt have the same problem SWG has with its forums...
Right now You have to search around the various fan forums to find any information. For example the upcoming Monk revision you mention, since there is no offical forum I had no way to know that they are planning a Monk update. IMO this is stupid of them, they need some offical forums ASAP, for them to require there customers to serach through fan forums to find info is lame...
I probably will end up taking few months off and then come back to see whats up... Because if I keep trying to play with the frustration level Im at now, Im going to nuke the game disc
Another gripe of mine is loot... I finally loot a yellow weapon with greats stats, of course I can't use it as its a Mace, but I figure ill make some money selling it, I go to the broker and find out theres like 20 of these weapons already up for sale, ranging from 2 gold down to 75 silver.. so it seems rare loot is not really rare <sigh>

Yep, the lack of an official forum is a pain.
There is a nice tracker on Silky Venom that lists all the Sigil dev posts from all the different forums:
Just to toss out my favorite "cool from the getgo" experience is the Kojani human line. Follow it closely through at least level 10 for a very fun experience. Just because it's confusing i'll mention it here... Around level 7 or 8 you come across a ghost who gives you a bunch of quests. don't do the ones in the stronghold yet, those are all lvl 10 quests. Continue the Trail quests to Master Garu.
any quest line where you fight for a dragon is ok in my books.
Secondly, do quests off in the Beacon of Haz'feef or however it's spelled, lots of quests for around level 10-12 and up. one where you slay a dragon. also there's a hill filled with skeleton called "<title> of Fates" or something like that. A very fun couple of quests are up there.
I've yet to find the "Fun" level 14 spot, but it seems like Three rivers is the best place, with runs into KE until you get up a bit higher.
The quests are dull - my god.. I simply cannot take another kill x of this.
The landscape is.. um.. well in Kojan it just feels fake. The mountain side textures for example.. yeesh.
The floors sometimes fall out the houses, and I stare into blackness... weird, and it breaks any sense of immersion .
The NPCs stand still like statues.
The combat says things like 'you have established ownership'. Really.. it could at least have said, you join battle or some such.
The world is pretty empty if you are used to the thriving community of WOW. Its hard to find quest partners.
Getting around takes forever.
The monsters do not seem to fit in...
Meh. For me, it's just too boring, time-consuming, and unpolished. It feels very very unfinished. How can so much money and so many people have created something so bland?
Sad for me, as I did want to try this game, but bleh. Maybe I will come back in a few months.

Talk about chopping wood; In UO people used to make a living chopping wood, making it into bows or furniture, and selling it to players who would set it up in their housing.
