Yes apart from the Jump ability, this game is like Guid wars and DDO rolled into one package.  Unlike guild wars however, this game has no real pvp worth mentioning, on the upside it does have a strong RP carebear community

It's definitely completely the opposite of Guild Wars.

There are swords in the game, the similarities end there

Don't listen to ahiles.  He is just a turbine hater.  The game has much more in Common with EQ2 or WoW then with Guild Wars or DDO.  The use of instances is closer to WoW then to Guild Wars.

In Guild Wars and you may know the towns are the only places where you will run into other players and from there you enter instances to do all of you adventuring.  In LOTRO the only places that are instances are various epic quests and some dungeons.  The towns will have people in them, but you will also run into people while adventuring.  For instance while doing one of the beginner quests you need to kill a specific Spider.  You run into numerous other people attempting to kill spiders in the caves and also attempting to kill the boss spider.  It is a lot more similar to WoW in this regard.

    Currently playing:
LOTRO & WoW (not much WoW though because Mines of Moria rocks!!!!)

    Looking Foward too:
Bioware games (Dragon Age & Star Wars The Old Republic)

They have some similarities, most shared by any other MMO. But in mechanics and such, they are very different.

Trying to remember the one day I played GuildWars, they had everything instanced with all outside locations with only you and your party- not the case with LOTRO. LOTRO has a mostly open world with some traditionally used instancing similar to WoW. Whoever said LOTRO is like GW and DDO roled together- two games I consider to be relatively similar and games I personally hate, I think is totally wrong, the player division, instancing and sever splitting I thought was atrocious, not the case with LOTRO (In otherwords there aren't multiple accessible instances of locations like cities where one would expect to see EVERYONE in that area. I seriously hated GWs and DDO to the fullest extent because of design choices, but I am really really enjoying LOTRO and I think it finally might replace WoW as my current MMO (nothing since WoW has held my attention for so long).

Another important note, the PVP prevalent in GWs is not to be found in LOTRO, they use a Player vs Player (using monster) for the PVP- haven't seen much of it but I hear it's fun.

Thx for getting back to me so fast. Does the game have WASD to move or is it point and click to move?
  • gannonreidgannonreid Member Posts: 172

WASD, the D and A are a little weird though when turning, characters make sharp turns, feels different than other games, but not by much, most probably won't notice or even care.

There may be a point-to-click option. Not sure though, and at work so I can't check it.

To consider any of the instancing in lotr like wow, is laughable at best.  To even getinto bloody building in lotr you have to enetr a loading screen.

This game is pure DDO and GW, do not be fooled by the carebears here.

It has WASD but you can also use your mouse to move if you hold the buttons down. You can also turn while doing this by moving the ball.

Last time I checked both GW and DDO had individual instances for everything.  So if I was to enter an instance only my party could do that.  WoW's instances are just like that as well.  Each instance is for your individual party.  Where is in LOTRO they use both individual instances and instances that are open to anyone who enters it.  This is not like GW or DDO at all.  So What Ahiles is saying about this game being pure DDO and GW is nothing but a lie.  He is a Turbine hater through and through.

Lol what a troll you obviously haven't even played the game.

The game is quite fun, and nothing like Guild Wars, or DDO unless you've had a lobotomy and your ability to reason and compare have been severly damaged.

As stated previously you will find far more similiarites to a game like WoW.  The PvP is the most fun you will have when there are raids worth of people running around the zone. There are still things in all parts of the game that need to be refined, but it is still over a month until release, and the devs seem to do a good job at listening to player feedback.

If you do pre-order as a founder you also would have the choice to pay $199 for a lifetime subscription if you want to, otherwise it is only $9.99/month as a founder as well so that is kind of a nice perk, saving 5 bucks a month never hurt anyone :P

QFT. If someone can't offer an opinion without name calling or otherwise speaking on the level of a grade school / middle school child, best advice is to ignore them as they obviously don't think or care about anyone else (hence the name calling) so how can they possibly offer up an opinion that is beneficial to you. No, they are giving you an opinion beneficial to them, which is to try and drive people away from trying the game. Why? Well, they didn't like it so they don't want anyone else to like it so they'll feel justified (right) with all their bashing.

    To Ahiles-

Yes you have to go through a loading screen to get into a building. But once u get into the building, everyone else is in there with u.  So it's not instanced like DDO at all.  You could conceiveably put every toon into a pub or weapon shop and they can converse w/ each other. No problem.  This game IS like WoW in that regard.  Nothing like GW.

I fail to comprehend how me using the word carebear and you calling me a troll is any different?.  The fact the i gave an opinion on the way the game is presented and similar to another game, and you dont like that?.
We must all be trolls, and children if we dare to have a different opionon to you carebears right?  What is is it, the fact that your game fails on so many levels, or the fact i mentioned the hated Dungeons & dragons name?
Ahiles, since you keep editing your post (2 times so far), all I have to say is: You misspelled Skills (skils) and Fairies (faries), you need to take out one of the "is" and capitalize the "d" in Dragons (since it's trademarked). Cheers!

There is a difference between Zoning and Instances.  From reading some of these posts, it sounds like lotro has lots of loading zones(correct me if im wrong) which is a good thing imo.  Frequent loading zones might seem annoying at first but it helps reduce lag greatly.  When I played EQ2, which has lots of loading zones, I had no lag.

Nah hardly any loading at all.

most of the world is open space.

You only zone when going into an instance or a house and when you zone it take like 5 seconds.

Ok here's how I describe it to a friend who has played WoW and EQ2 and found EQ2 a bit too much and WoW he feels is a bit too little:

LOTR is like both WoW and EQ2 in many ways.... It shares the simplicity of the WoW interface and has better quests than either EQ2 or WoW.  It's crafting system rivals anything else out there right now (except maybe EVE's) and it has a very nice combat system as well.

Overall I think it's a great game.  It is *nothing* like Guild Wars beyond having swords.

WoW players will find the PVE a step up from what they're used to but the PVP is not quite as good, though it's way too soon to really tell.  I actually enjoy monster play quite a bit though it probably won't really start to shine until 3 months or so after release when the majority of players start hitting levels where they're adventuring in the monster play areas.

I see a lot of replies from people who *obviously* don't play the game.  I've been playing it for almost a year now (since Beta Phase 1) and I can tell you this game has it all.  I enjoy the fact that the game isn't open PVP but offers monster play.  The instancing is not bad at all and the world feels open and alive.

As I've said before:  It's the first Video game I have pre-ordered since Ultima Online.

Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.
