Why did the review make an issue that when he killed a goat he got gloves from it? I mean, this happens in what, just about every mmo.
most modern games are doing away with that. I was surprised that Vanguard still had small animals with shields stuck up their rectums. In LoTRO for example mobs drop appropriate loot. Humanoids drop weapons armor and coin etc. Animals drop hides, teeth, claws, and meat. Some of the animal drops are rare and can be used in crafting exceptional grade weaposns and armor.
I'd lke to see looting animals made into a skill, like skinning. If you have it you loot it, if not you don't.
Archlord has that.
Lol, I'm such a hypocrit.
I thought about giving Archlord a shot, but well, I've heard a lot of bad things about it.
Kidding aside. Not really the kind of game I'm looking for.
never know til you try it, a lot of good panty shots in that game.

Lineage 2 beats all for panty shots. I won't disagree or confirm that
This is a pretty bad review from a big name site. He did bring out something I have been thinking while playing Vanguard. There are a million and one fantasy games out there including the EQ1 still going strong.

Hey, I'm not saying that I create dark elf females and just run around the starting area or anything. I'm just saying, you know...dark elf females in bondage, you know...
You know, I think I'm gonna go reactivate my account, bbl.
This is a pretty bad review from a big name site. He did bring out something I have been thinking while playing Vanguard. There are a million and one fantasy games out there including the EQ1 still going strong. Make something different!
It's a pretty tempting model to follow.
Most if not all MMOs that have ever reached at least 100k subscribers for even awhile are still running, and they're predominantly of the high fantasy variety. In contrast, most of the 'different' ones; Auto Assault, Sims Online, Planetside, Matrix, World War II, Motor City Online, etc; they never really quite caught on.
Of course it isn't as clear-cut as that, Dungeons and Dragons didn't do too well despite being typical fantasy (and well known at that), and a game like City of Heroes did really well even though it's different from it's peers.
But my point is, I think most developers have been afraid to try something different. That's starting to change though; with whispers of MMOs like Fallout and Firefly, and confirmations like Warhammer 40k and Star Trek.
This is probably the last big year of high-fantasy MMO releases. Not to say the target-and-icon-click model of atypical MMOs will subside some with it, but hopefully the surge of different themes will spark new design innovations to accommodate each individual game.
I wonder if Brad reads any of these reviews? Do you think he agrees or is he in denial?
Denial of what? Someone's Opinion? Sorry, but Brad has been VERY honest about the state of the game, over & over...
That said, just because there are haters out there doesn't make them right, period.
And just because there are rabid fanboys out there, doesn't make them right either...

If you can't beat 'em, hold 'em off 'till you come up with a better plan.
Just to make it clear, this is the UK PCGamer, not the US one. Same title, same set-up, but run independantly.
I'm from the UK, so this is my mag of choice, preferring it to PCZone.
Overall the score and the criticisms are fairly fair. Although they did miss out the PVP and the diplomacy. However the game does have huge issues, and is not casual friendly at all.
Same publisher as the US magazine - although a somewhat more substantial magazine (having subscribed to both)
PC Gamer is, as mentioned, the most influential magazine in the UK and indeed parts of Europe.
The reason it is so short is that this is a magazine article. Games that score well get bigger, longer reviews of 2, 4, even more pages. Solid games get a page. Low scorers get put at the back of the pack and given little space. But heh it did get a review.
I would expect European servers to be clustered like the DDO servers within the year; the PC Gamer review is a serious body blow.
I also recall on a PcGamer U.S. Podcast that it drove then kind of crazy that the U.K. uses 10 piont system rather then the traditional % system . For the most part , I can't wait for PcGamer U.S. review is , cause the only game I ever disagreed with their score was WoW .
And it will be interesting as well. These are heavy weight publications - I know I take their reviews into account. (It doesn't stop me buying 'middle of the road' stuff but I will usually leave it until the price has dropped if it is only average etc.)
And whilst the UK version doesn't use a % score they are all to 1 decimal place so its the same type of score.
Well they gave WoW a 95%. And it will be interesting as well. These are heavy weight publications - I know I take their reviews into account. I was in shock at the 95% , Oi felt cause WoW went with the cartoony look it shouldn't of got such a high score, and I do believe that is the only mmo to day that has gotten an editors choice. imo wow was a 75 at best , but seeing how they are 8mill + strong , pcgamer knows how to pick them .I still dont agree though , and that is the only game I disagree on. Back in the 90's my brother and I would only by Editor choice games . So yah again , it has some weight.

WOW was made to look the way it does for a reason , so it looks like your in a Warcraft world . people that have no idea what a quality MMO should look like allways post " but it has cartoon grafix " this makes me laugh , they could have easy made the game look like LOTRO or EQ2 but choose the correct route & went with a more artistic feel which I am grateful for .. Graphics don't make a game even though wow graphics are great & FIT the title , try to expand your imagination & don't look at just one part of a game .

Couldn't find it , for the most part 1/4 of the way through , they changed the art direction from a DoaC to what you have now .
I always saw WoW as very clever - and still do. There were many posts about how they had 'just thrown all the good bits of other games together' - but regardless of what bits of their own they added it isn't that simple. At every point decisions are needed and as someone who has played games for many years I believed - and still believe - that they had a vision.
Vanguard, DDO, MxO, DnL - such games show that it isn't to make an mmorpg (other games too of course). Brad says that his vision still holds and is unchanged but do people believe this? Did people understand what Brad's vision was in the first place or what it has changed to. Experience gain, some crafting changes and travel are just areas that are 'in flux'. Now these obviously fall under what Brad considers flexible; does this resonate however.
As it stands the PC Gamer review is in the 'above average' bracket but lower than good. It will carry weight and quite right to. Some people who bought the game and complained were told that they should have known what to expect from the posts on the boards. A point I refuted by pointing out that, as we are often told, people who read the boards are in a minority and the box did not carry a health warning. Well the PC Gamer review is that warning writ large for a much larger percentage of the population.
How to recover? I am sure that the plan is to have an expansion pack and hope that the game can be quote relaunched unquote. Hmmm. Not so sure in the short term. PC Gamer, in addition to the Vanguard review had a pretty Age of Conan preview and a special feature on LotR with thousands more keys and +3 rings of agility as well.
