Why do we have to be limited to just sci-fi or fantasy? What about a modern day setting? What about alternative histories? What about MMOs that revolve around the 1940's pulp novels or noir movies? How about an MMO based on the Byzantine empire or The Hundred Years War? Come to think of it, there was an early online game based on the hundred years war made by James F. Dunnigan. I wonder if that's still around.....
Mostly though, I'd like to see an MMO the truly required the participation of thousands of players as it's core game mechanic. The more social the setting, the more possibility for a game that reaches that ideal. So far, only text games like Castle Marrach, Modus Operandi, and Federation 2 seem to be playing with this idea.
Computer games lean far too heavily on sci-fi and fantasy as it is.

HAHA actually I did put other in the vote. I just picked Sci-Fi because that seems to be an area that has started to finally gain some recognition in the MMO field. I do appreciate your other answers though and that is why I asked the question.. Thanks!
Out of every 100 men, 10 should not be there, 80 are nothing but targets, 9 are the real fighters. Ah, but one, ONE of them is a warrior, and he will bring the others home. -Heraclitus 500BC
Yes, Sci-fi can be unlimited, but fantasy can only go so far unless new races/story lines are created which take just as much work as the sci-fi games. And it seems, alot of sci-fi nerds go for the sci-fi games. If you are looking for a good sci-fi game, Id suggest Eve-online, Project entropia, and Anarch Online. All games you can check out :P. Of the three Eve-online is the best.
I actually did try EVE-Online, though the graphics were very nice I just couldnt get into it. For some reason just sitting in a ship 24/7 just didnt appeal to me, I wanna go on the planets and have some hand to hand or just plan military type ground operations. Thanks for your recommendation though.

Hello all, I watch up and coming games all the time and always looking for a little news on possible games in the works. One thing I am very interested in are the prospects for more Sci-Fi MMO's.. Stargate Worlds and Huxley look very interesting ATM. Anyway, what I was most curious about was how most of you feel about other types of MMO. Fantasy MMO has always been the top types of MMO out there, however I have seen more Sci-Fi ones slowly popping up. What type of MMO are you interested in and why?
I love these polls 'cause they help to expose the lie that fantasy is more popular than Sci-Fi.
Sci-Fi is, always has been, and always will be far more popular than fantasy...so why is it that developers keep insisting that fantasy is more popular than Sci-Fi? Because it's much easier to make a fantasy based MMOG than it is to make one based in a technologically advanced world.
If Star Wars Galaxies had received the same level of commitment and TLC from SOE as World of Warcraft got from Blizzard then everyone would be playing it and it would be bathed in the limelight.
Personally I'd like to see a Sci-Fi/Cyberpunk MMOG...something along the lines of an Anarchy Online II or a Ghost in The Shell or, maybe, a Terminator MMOG.
Hard cyberpunk scifi. No magic, psycho powers or pseudo physics. Player run economy, housing, dynamic environment, vehicles, FPS style combat system and high end graphics. No levels, classes or xp. It should be possible to import player created content and graphics to game after peer and moderator review.
Why? I am bored to class-level-holy trinity fantasy games that are repeating same pattern. One WoW is enough - we don't need more fantasy games that are carbon copies from each other.

The only reason that fantasy is the top mmo imo is because the gaming industry is to afraid to step out of their box. Personally I would like to see alot more sci fi or even better more historically based mmo's. Roma Victor looked great as far as game play but man... the graphics are saw were so ugly I just couldnt play it.
It's all about taste tbh. I'm sure we've all, at some point, been dreaming about being a super hero and live amongst strange creatures. Or even fly a spaceship? I'm not a great fan of Sci-fi, yet I love Eve online. But when it comes to Startrek and such... well, lets just say that's not my kind of gameboard.
The world is really crying out for a good Sci-Fi MMORPG. SWG should have been it, but alas it was not meant to be. I'll be buying LOTRO, as, although its another fantasy MMORPG, it is THE setting, so will be good to relive the books in another form. Warhammer might be interesting with it's PvP.
The reason why most, if not all MMORPGs are fantasy/sci-fi is becuase they are fairly easy to place, create lore and to create classes and content with. Setting up a historical MMORPG would be difficult to create truely different classes and content with, although it would be nice to see devs me for creative than the orcs/humans/elves.

I would agree with this, ex-swg vet here myself I loved that game but unfortunately it didnt get a lot of love from SOE or Lucas Arts, sad too because that game had such great potential.

Really, let's have some more decent sci-fi mmorpg, please.
If old style cyberpunk RPG with its hacker class and such gives developers the scare, seeing as it might not have an instant appeal to the masses like fantasy does... Well then you always other sub-genres, which are technologically less heavy. Like post-apocalyptic sci-fi, straight space opera, or even steampunk if you don't want to stray far from the trend.
Though I must admit my ultimate sci-fi fantasy is is a beautiful MMO recreation of Blade Runner's dark and rain-slicked Los Angeles, 2019, with its thinly populated huge skyscrapers, flying vehicles and rogue replicants...

I know the quoted reply was made a few days ago (on the 17th), but I just wanted to say... well said, well said indeed. Every so often, a post is made which stands out... and this one was it for me today.
Scroll back a few days to see the whole post, I shortened it so it wouldn't scroll the page too much.

I agree with most of it. Not so keen on FPS because it may turn away casual players like myself. XP of some sort will be necessary for measuring skills, that is unless you want your character to be limited by how well your own skills translate into keyboard/mouse movements. How would you do things like electronic lock picking, negotiations, seductions, acrobatics, and other actions? I think some form of level (thus XP) is necessary for an RPG.
I'd like to see a skill system where improvement is based on use or instruction. That would mean non-combat actions would be more important. You may log on for half an hour and not fight anyone because you've gone to the library to learn about the basics of vehicle repair.
Any game that can successfully integrate user created content will be an initial hit unless it REALLY screws up everything else.

Anyway, the MMORPG's that i'm waiting for right now are Gods and Heroes: Rome Rising and Pirates of the Burning Sea.
Star Trek Online and Stargate Worlds are just to far away. And who knows, maybe GnH and PotBS are my cup of tea eventually.
