I've seen this in alot of F2P's, and in FFXI. Like, I think Last Chaos, might have tried it if the rogue diddn't have to be a woman.
I've been of the opinion that they do this to be quick and cheap about it, but am wondering, does anyone think this adds anything to the game?
They came from the sea and they came from the sky, Captain America is going to die!

Why not, they do race restricted classes.

Sex restricted classes, as in poor priests cant have sex and stuff?
Hmm, really, why not, but only where it makes sense ofc, like amazons, monks or so. Otherwise let the choice free.

Agreed.
The whole gender based class thing has its roots from early RPGs where graphics were limited. When they were designing a class rather then making 10 different models that could wear 10 different types of armor (10 * 10 = 100) they would make one model that could wear 10 types of armor (1 * 10 = 10) lots less work.
As for in MMORPGs I think that is the reason why it can be seen in many Free to play ones since they are still under the same graphics limitations.
I really hate the sex-restricted class systems. I hate being shoe-horned into either being a male tank or a female archer, for example, when I really want to be a female tank. It doesn't add anything to the game for me except irritation.
I am sure they have their reasons. I don't have to like it. They never asked for my opinion.

Sex classes.
Good idea I think.
If a specific game had pre-determined lore(movie, books, etc) and classes were restricted to a specific sex, then yea I could deal with that in the mmo version.
I'm all for taking classes that are restricted to engaging in sex.....as long as I don't have to study on my own.
Depends on the game I guess and how far they take it. It could either add flavor or it could be incredibly annoying in which case I probably wouldn't be playing the game anyway.

Life sucks, buy a helmet.
Another option would be to create different classes for the sexes. (This'd be more work, but also more interesting I think.) Such that a male tank is pretty much a brute and a female tank would be a fast / avoid tank.
I could see that stuff working.
