A warning to players in Spain

This game is published by codemasters/turbine, which uses AT&T as provider in the game DDO. So it is likely that they also use the same provider for LOTRO. If you are a player in Spain or Greece, you might want to check out:

http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/1282707/thread/121213#1282707

and the tech support forum from ddo. also note that the spanish forum of this game is dead.

Unless they use a different ISP for this game, chances are high that the same problems are to be expected in LOTRO. So trying to get into the beta or waiting for a free trial might be a good idea to prevent buying a game that will not run due to ISP politics.

someone posted this , they arent a sdev but it makes sense...

"I'm at a bit of a loss on how they're supposed to "fix" this. The ISP that Codemasters picks is the one that connects their datacenter to the internet backbone in Europe. They don't get to pick the routes to various countries, nor the ISPs that people are using in those countries. If Codemaster's ISP is providing shoddy service, it should show up with the same symptoms for all of the EU players, not just the ones in two specific countries.

    thats not correct

its all about the routing. and at&t also has its own backbones being one of the biggest isps worldwide i would guess. at&t simply got bad routing towards spain, otherwise i and other players in spain wouldnt have good ping and 0 packet loss in all of europe and skandinavia, but get a 10% loss on the european ddo server. it almost seems like at&t is trying to make telefonica look bad on purpose, maybe to get a foot into the door.

anyway, besides any guessing for the reasons of this its simply  a fact that in ddo the spanish forum is dead and no spanish players even respond in the general forum. also a fact is that i got telefonica since more then a year as my isp and besides the problem that they refuse to offer fastpath, the ping is extremely stable and packetloss basicaly nonexistant.

its no rocket science to figgure that if codemasters had a different isp, chances are good that there would be as few problems for spanish users as they usualy got.

unless of course telefonica would be purposely sabotaging the connection to certain IPs, which is not only rather unlikely, but could also be proven and would ruin their image (not to mention legal consequences). thats actualy something i would rather expect from at&t ;)

    Re: ISP Politics ???

All conjecture on your part at to where the problem is. Also if there is a peering point problem it is the local ISPs responsibility to resolve it with the other end. Most don't want to be bothered with it until a large enough segment of their users complain.

I have to agree, it is going to be your local isp who is not allowing the access, maybe do to a government restriction ?  Like I said I am from America and not sure , just trying to help. So you may want to give your isp a call and ask them why you cant access certain services. Also if you have ms-dos prompt , you could try pinging the AT&T and see what hops you are going throw or where the hop is blocked.

Lets just hope that open beta comes and you have no problems !

the reasons why at&t got problems with spain are irrelevant imho. even if telefonica would refuse to cooperate with at&t, that would be a problem between those 2 parties and maybe the european court.

my specific problem here is between codemasters and the paying customer. that there might be problems between codemaster and third parties, at&t and third parties or whatever is totaly irrelevant at this point.

codemasters sells the game in spain so they should use an isp that has a decent connectivity to spain. spain does NOT have general connectivity problems.  it is not impossible to find an isp that can handle it.

so if codemasters insists on using at&t they should either refund spanish ddo players or at least warn them beforehand and not just let them spend their money for nothing.

    nothing to argue about realy...

as it is right now in ddo, codemasters takes money from ppl in spain perfectly knowing they wont be able to play. i do not understand this "its not my fault so i can keep your money" attitude shown here.

it doesnt matter anyway, all i'm doing here is warning fellow players in spain so they do not get ripped off. i'm simply telling them to have a test ride before they spend money on a product they might not be able to enjoy in spain. after all, LOTRO is also a codemaster game and its very likely that they use at&t also for this game. again nothing to argue about realy...

tbh im not sure when or if i will be playing this game. at least i will wait for a free trial, thats for sure because the beta server wouldnt be convincing me enough to believe that everything works. its not that i suddenly decide "oh, today i dont like codemasters, lets whine a bit". right after its release about a year ago, ddo also had major problems with spain and greece. back then i simply kept posting and helping the netops to locate the problem, which one of them actualy located within one of my tracerts.

coming back a year later and being hit by the same sort of problem (this time loss instead of latency) does anger me as is probably not hard to understand.

still, i dont flame, nor insult anyone, nor say ddo or lotro are bad products. i dont know lotro, but even though a lot of ppl on this forum here talk bad about ddo, as matter of fact i think it is one of the best mmos there are. the only real problem with ddo itself is that it is a bit short, playtime wise. well, besides the problem for players in spain.
