Bad graphics? Compared to what?

So I logged back into DDO for the free check-out-the-new-stuff weekend. Hadn't played in quite awhile. I'm running it on a better computer now, but my settings are pretty much the same as they were back with a mediocre cpu and a 6600GT. Firing it up, the DDO graphics were rather shocking in their goodness. And then I checked the settings and noticed it was only on High textures and not Very High. (Only available on the DVD install.) So I turned on the very high textures and pretty much maxed everything out.

...whoa. I was always impressed especially with how textures of buildings and the like looked, but either I'm remembering poorly, or they buffed up them and the character textures and lighting somewhere along the way, because now they are amazing.

I can understand why some people may not like the game, and that's fine, but for all the times I've read on here someone complaining about how DDO has bad graphics, I say, "Compared to what?"

Seriously, anyone who says the game has bad graphics without saying they think that way because they just don't care for that type of look is either a liar or they are blind. There's plenty of reasons someone could give as to why the game isn't for them, but I don't know how anyone could say with a straight face that the graphics are bad.

And then I met a couple old buddies on there, jumped into a group, and fired up the built-in voice chat. Why doesn't every game have that? Yeah, yeah, you can use Ventrilo and the like, but how many people do, particularly PUGs.

Summon a giant pet spider that follows you around, and see if the graphics aren't good enough to make you not want to be followed around by a giant spider even if it is friendly.

Good stuff.

Can you post some before and after shots?

People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.

In my experience Turbine has always been excellent in the graphics department.   Luckily the graphics are not coming at the expense of bringing your system to a halt like it was back in the AC2 days.

I agree. I'd love to see some before and after shots or at least a shot of the very high settings. I recently updated my PC as well and now I've been wondering what some mmorpgs would not look like since I should be able to play on higher graphic settings.

The graphics n D&D Online are great!

Playing the game on a 22" widescreen monitor adds to the immersion.  I do not play with maxed settings (ati x850pro 256mb AGP) although there's not much I'm missing on with the current settings.  Cranking up everything for the fullest possible features will give you an environment that's enthralling.

p.s. I'm not a fan of the bloom effects but it does add some softness.
