Ijust don't understand why everyone is comparing every game to world of warcraft.Yes a lot of people play it and yes a lot of people had WOW as their first mmorpg. But just because i love the movie lord of the rings doesn't mean i need to compare every new movie tolord of the rings now do i?Just getting a bit tired of the wow-vs threads.Every game has simularities to other games and every game has it's own distinct content.

I might be tempted to compare other fantasy based films to the Lord of the Rings movies, even action/adventure movies, movies based on books as well maybe.
I guess WOW is just a benchmark that most people have experienced, and lets face it most MMO's basicly work in the same way so there is a comparison to be made, but it does tend to encourage GameX is cool and GameY is crap type comments, when it's often a personal preferance.
You say you don't understand why people use "WoW vs. everything else" even though its the #1 mmo in NA and since alot of people tried this as there first mmo. Well I really don't understand why you just don't get the fact that playing an MMO for the first time is very memorable (whether good or bad).
And at least the last time I checked "people set things has benchmarks because those things are memorable.. being good memories or bad and have no other frame of reference to go by"
I'm not knockin' you flakes I just don't understand why "WoW vs. everything else?" questions surprise you?
Is there an MMO that out there that isn't affected by Xao Ping Wang and their money grubbing macro bots?

Just say no to ingame money/mob farming.... the site says it all
WoW is everything right but everything wrong at the same time. I simply cannot play it because I feel like I've played it 100 times already. Most generic game I've ever seen.

Looking Forward To: SW:TOR
The same reason when you go to OS forums people will compare Mac OS X and every distro of Linux to Microsoft Windows.
The same reason when you go to a hardware site and people are comparing Nvidia and ATi or Intel and AMD.
This is a discussion forum and community about MMO's and whether you agree or not, WoW is one of the biggest MMO's in the genre. It's only natural that people are going to compare everything that comes out to it.
Sure it get's annoying but I would MUCH rather put with that than have a genre that was dying or boring and IMHO, WoWs gigantic success is a huge factor why so many other games are getting funding at the moment.
Important Information regarding Posting and You
Didn't take it as a "knocking" hehe.I understand a bit what you are saying but for example i played DAOC as my first mmorpg. Most mmorpgs i played after that i took them on what i thought/read/heard they would be.So i did not look if it in any way resembled DAOC.Some games could be compared to wow but it's just a bit over the top at the moment. It looks like even games like eve online and city of heroes get compared to WOW , now that's mostly what i mean.If someone compares WOW to age of conan or vanguard i can understand where they are coming from.It also could be just me...
People also mostly don't compare it so they can get an idea of the game.I could see new mmorpgplayers who only played WOW ask themselves: is this the game i am willing to play and would like. Most of the wow-vs threads are to show how bad another new mmorpg is..since it isn't like WOW and that's the annoying part for me.People should be glad it is not WOW cause if you wanted a game like that you'd play WOW itself and not search for another new mmorpg.
Same goes for the poster above me...i understand comparing 2 games that are the same genre...I do however understand the big importance WOW has played for the mmorpg genre and respect/appreciate that a lot and must add on a side note that i am not an anti-wow-boy

it is annoying, especially the fanboys whose universe is world of warcraft. But yeah some of it is understandable when it's the mmorpg everyone and their dog knows. On this site, most likely everyone has tried WoW compared to any other mmorpg.
Hehe editted that post..posted it back and then see you say basically same thing.I see we are on the samelevel here and that is just what i meant.
Because we're trying to to make it a scientific unit, the Standard WoW, by which we can rank other games.
Game "A" = 1 * WoW iff "A" is also World of Warcraft
All other games have WoW-coefficients not equal to 1.
A game is a WoW-clone if the limit as the precision of the coefficient approaches infinity is equal to one.
The derivative of the Standard WoW is the Standard Everquest.
The integral of the Standard WoW is undefined.
Why the WoW vs threads boils down to one simple fact..... 8 million people subscribed (at one point or another) (i'm not currently one of them) I have seen it referred to a number of places as the 800 Lb Gorilla in the corner, and that is exactly what it is.....
From a marketing standpoint (fortunately, or not) WoW elevated the presence of the MMO, rather handily establishing itself as the 'benchmark' by which all others will be compared. Alot of the people doing this aren't factoring in the fact that prior to this monstrosity that is Azeroth if a game drew in 1/2 a million people there was dancing in offices and champaigne all around.... ok, maybe not
just my2cents, but what do i know.... in Azeroth I was a cow.
"We aren't going to ... Period. End of statement."
ya. ok. whatever.
but what do i know, i'm only a vanbois i'm told.
